COMMITTEE SPOTLIGHT
(a look into the lives of committee leaders) Clinic Coordinators [Part 1]
This week, we take a look into the life of one of the Clinic Coordinators of the Project, Huizhen Zh.

How did you first become involved with the project? I first joined the Hep B Project in Spring Semester of 2010 because of Caitlin, who was my freshman year floor mate. She told me that the project really needed Cantonese speakers, and she really encouraged me to apply to be a volunteer. Since I wasn't in any health clubs back then, I decided I'll join the Hep B Project to see what it's all about. What appealed to you about the clinic coordinator position? {hepbproject@gmail.com}

If someone were to apply for the clinic coordinator position, what qualities/qualifications would you want them to have?
First and foremost, the utmost important obligation of being a Clinic Coordinator is to give the best patient care possible. This means that you have to ensure the smooth operations of the two weekly clinics, as well as follow-up with patients. Last year, Myo and Eric enhanced the clinic system and improved the follow-up care for positive patients. This year, Jason and I managed to follow-up with all 90+ of our positive patients with the aid of the Positive Patient Committee, created a follow-up system for future positive patients and updated the CAIR system. It is up to you to determine what area of patient-care you want to focus on during your term as Clinic Coordinator, but remember that whatever you choose, you must have the patients care in mind at all times. Second thing you need to know is that Clinic Coordinator must be organize and be able to multi-task. For example, during the recent several clinics, Jason and I have to working on updating the patient database, updating CAIR system as well as performing the regular duties that we already have at clinic. As the Clinic Coordinator, you are expected to juggle with different projects at the same time because a lot of the works that you do can only be done during clinic hours. Therefore, organization and the ability to multi-task are very important because you cant lose track of what you are working on. Third thing you need to know is that Clinic Coordinator must be committed to attending clinics The purpose of a newsletter is to provide specialized If you explore the Publisher catalog, you will find many both Wednesday and Saturday. Once you sign up for this position, you must make the time commitinformation to a targeted audience. The last thing you need to be aware of before you apply to Clinic Coordinator is that you need to keep up an active communication with not just your partner, but also with the many other coordinators and volunteers within the project. For instance, you will have to talk with the InternalAffairs Coordinator to make sure you have enough volunteers to come to clinic, you have to work with the Finance Coordinator to get more clinical supplies, and you have to report to the Director to provide updates and discuss issues arising from clinic. In addition, since majority of the volunteers completely their volunteering hours at clinics, you will have an opportunity to interact with many different volunteers. Invite feedbacks from these volunteers and figure out what can be improved. New volunteers sometimes have a fresh perspective at things that you fail to see, and experienced volunteers may help you find things that you may have overlooked. Ultimately, it is the open and honest communication with one other that allows all of us to achieve the Hep B vision.

How do you think your experience in the Hep B Project will impact you in grad school? During one Saturday Clinic, I met a Chinese patient who came for Hepatitis B blood screening. During our conversation, she confessed that she had never stepped foot out of Chinatown before that day because of the language barrier. In Cantonese, she explained that she came to our clinic because her husband had died of hepatitis B-induced liver cancer. Ever see a fellow Hep Ber on campus and not sure whether to say hi or not? The Social Committee has made a huge effort in organizing events and socials for our members to bond and get to know each other, and slowly eliminating those awkward encounters. Over twenty people showed up to get their bowl on at local Albany Bowl, and as the pictures can attest, Hep B volunteers definitely know how to have fun. Boulder Discovery Giving Patients a Fighting Chance

Since its introduction in 1982, the Hepatitis B vaccine has been 95% effective in preventing infection and the chronic consequences of Hepatitis B. With current medicine, even those with chronic hepatitis B can be treated with interferon and antiviral agents to repress viral replication and inflammation. However, that goes to say that once infected there is no way to remove the virus from the body.

A discovery by a University of Colorado Boulder-led research team could provide a new perspective on the treatment of the hepatitis B virus (HPV) and a way to end the cycle of cellular damage. Researchers have known for some time that the virus contains the genetic material for the synthesis of a pathogenThis story can fit 175-225 words. purchasing a mailing list from a company. ic protein, HBx, which promotes the growth of tumors. In a similar study, the authors of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences used a tiny roundworm known as C. elegans to identify the HBx host targets by inducing cell death with a protein known as CED-9. CED-9 is a homolog to the Bcl-2 protein in humans, meaning that while it comes from a different organism it still expresses similar functions. While the C. elegans are not native hosts for the virus, they are ideal models for HBV studies because around 35 percent of their genes have human homologs and on top of that they are relatively simple animals.

Across the globe, 400 million people are infected with HBV. While there are treatments and antiviral drugs for chronic HBV carriers, there are very few treatments for those in developing countries with no access to such drugs and where infections are occurring. Researchers are hopeful that new clinical and pharmaceutical breakthroughs will arise because of these recent findings, promising to help those infected worldwide.
