Setting Database Environment Variables

If your application uses a relational database or OLAP data source, you must set the database environment variables for the user before you start the Cognos processes. If you do a default installation, ensure that you set and export the database environment variables before you start installing. These database variables allow Cognos products to connect to your database. One option is to include these commands in the .profile or .login script of the user who starts the Cognos services. For a list of example values, see "Database Environment Variables" (p. 25).

Description

Oracle 9.2 and Oracle 10 The load library path. client On Solaris: LD_LIBRARY_PATH

Some database vendors supply both 32 and 64-bit database client libraries. If you are using a 64-bit Unix operating system, your default load library path On AIX: probably references the 64-bit client LIBPATH libraries. If you are using the Oracle 9.2 On HP-UX: SHLIB_PATH or Oracle 10 client you must ensure the 32-bit database client libraries are installed and that the appropriate environment variables are set to enable Cognos products to use the 32-bit database client version. Examples: On Solaris: LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOM E/lib32:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH On AIX: LIBPATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib32:$LIB PATH On HP-UX: SHLIB_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib32: $SHLIB_PATH

Environment variable NLS_LANG The NLS_LANG environment variable uses the following format:

Description You must ensure that Oracle's NLS_LANG environment variable and the locale properties specified in Configuration Manager are compatible. Failure to do so can cause unexpected results, such as corruption of Impromptu catalogs.

NLS_LANG format = <language>_<territory>. After you complete the installation, <character set> ensure that you use compatible Configuration Manager Locale property settings. For example, if the environment variable is set to NLS_LANG French_France.WE8ISO8859P1

On UNIX, compatible Configuration Manager Locale property settings would be Locale fr-fr (for AIX) Native Locale fr_FR.ISO8859-1 (for HP-UX) Native Locale fr_FR.iso88591 (for Solaris) Native Locale fr Encoding iso-8859-1 On Windows, compatible Configuration Manager Locale property settings would be Locale fr-fr Native Locale fra_fra.28591 Encoding iso-8859-1 For additional information, see your Oracle documentation, and Locale properties in the Configuration Manager User Guide.
