COURSE DESCRIPTION Working in confined spaces is a high-risk activity and has been responsible for many work-related deaths. Legislation requires that all persons with work activities related to confined space/s must undertake appropriate training and be assessed as competent, to perform those activities in accordance with OSHA 1994 & INDUSTRY CODE OF PRACTICE (ICOP) for safe working in a Confined Space 2010. NIOSH Confined Space Awareness Seminar delivers essential knowledge to any individual who may work around confined spaces. Examples of confined spaced include storage tanks, boilers, sewers, excavations, manholes, tunnels, and open top spaces more than four feet in depth, such as pits, vaults, and vessels. The hazards that exist and that are met when entering and working in a confined space are capable of causing injury, illness and death. Often accidents occur because a hazard goes unrecognized. In effect, the confined space is a hazard, and must be treated as such. When working around a confined space it is necessary to be aware of the dangers that exist in and around the confined space area. By participating in NIOSH Confined Space Awareness seminar you will be helping to educate your employees in the safe practices when working around confined spaces. In addition, the Confined Space Awareness program can be used as an introduction to confined space entry Practical training.

You need to know about them so you can protect yourself from sickness or injury. This booklet will give you the information you need to protect yourself against hazardous substances. Read it carefully, and follow the instructions. Controlling hazards is part of everyones job.

A Policy for Safety Your employer has set up a written hazard communication programme. It spells out the Steps they have taken to tell you about Hazardous chemicals. The programme Includes an up-to- date list of hazardous chemicals at your job site. Doing Your Part Heres how you can stay healthy and safe as you work. Find out as much as you can about the hazardous substances you work with. Read the chemical labels, the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and other information sources. Take part in the training programs your employer offers. Wear the safety equipment thats right for your job. Follow the rules at your job site. Dont take chances. How hazardous substance hurt

There are several ways that hazardous substances can enter your body. Inhaling The chemical vapors, dusts and fumes you breathe can irritate your nose, mouth and lungs. They can also damage your internal organs. Absorption You can absorb damaging chemicals directly through your skin. Or they can be splashed into your eyes. Chemicals can also enter through cracks and cuts on your skin. Ingestion You can accidentally take in damaging The chemical vapors, dusts and chemicals as you eat food or drink fumes you breathe can irritate beverages that have been contaminated your nose, mouth and lungs. by chemicals in the air. You can also ingest them if you smoke near chemicals. Hazardous chemicals that enter your body can cause skin irritation, breathing problems and serious illness. In general, the greater the amount of a hazardous substance that enters your body, the more it can affect your body. The longer you are exposed to a hazardous substance, the more likely it is to affect you. Its good to keep exposure to any hazardous substance as low as possible. Exposure can be: Acute Hazard An immediate and direct threat to your life. For example, breathing chlorine gas will cause severe lung irritation immediately Chronic Hazard Repeated exposure that occurs over months or years. For example, chronic or long-term exposure to a solvent such as benzene can cause blood disorders. Long-term exposure to other solvents can cause damage to your liver and nervous system.

Its good to keep exposure to any hazardous substance as low as possible.

Warning labels
The container label for hazardous substances has information that can help you protect yourself. Report any torn or missing labels to your supervisor, if you transfer substances from one container to another, the new container should also have a label. Labels contain the following information: Basic Warnings This includes: The identity of the chemical The substance name and brand or trade name, if any The manufacturers name Any hazardous ingredients Signal Word For example, Danger (the most severe hazard), Warning or Caution (the least severe hazard). Hazards Physical hazards (from explosion, corrosion, spills, fire, etc.) Health hazards (may cause, cancer, birth defects, kidney damage or skin damage, may be toxic or radioactive, etc.)
Other Labels Some labels may also list: Precautions to take, such as protective equipment, clothing and procedures First aid instructions: what to do in case of emergencies Handling, storage and disposal instructions Special instructions, such as precautions around children If you dont find the information you need on the label, check with your supervisor and the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).

Material Safety Data Sheets

Read the Material Safety Data Sheet before you start a job.
The Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) has complete information on chemical substances or mixtures. Your employer must inform you where you can get the MSDSs. Ask your supervisor where they are filed. Each MSDS includes: Chemical Identification The chemical name, trade name, manufacturers name and address, any emergency phone numbers. Physical Characteristics Including the chemicals appearance, odor, boiling point, evaporation rate, melting point, etc. Hazardous Ingredients What can cause harm. Health Hazards Symptoms of overexposure. Physical Hazards Such as spills, fire, explosion, etc. Handling Precautions How to use, store and transfer safely. First Aid Procedures What to do in case of an emergency. Reactivity Tells whether the chemical is stable. Control Procedures How to protect yourself, including what Personal Protective Equipment to wear, and how to handle a spill or leak. Read the MSDS before you start a job. Be prepared to protect yourself.

Maintaining control
You and your employer together can control your exposure to hazardous substances. Wear Personal Protective Equipment (Head, hand, eye, respiratory and skin protectors listed on the Material Safety Data Sheet.) It can lessen your exposure to hazardous substances. Personal Hygiene Take meal breaks and coffee breaks away from your work area. Wash your hands and face before you eat, drink or smoke. Wear work clothes that are washed thoroughly and frequently. Dont wear your work clothes in your car or at home. Make sure your personal protective equipment is clean. Keep hazardous substances off your skin and clothing. Engineering Controls Engineering controls offer mechanical methods of cutting down chemical exposures. Some examples include substituting less hazardous substances, using safety cans for solvents and installing ventilating equipment during indoor construction work. Administrative Controls These include shortening or rotating work shifts to cut down on exposure.

Personal protective equipment can lessen your exposure to hazardous substances.

Training for safety

Your employer offers training in handling hazardous substances safely and using Personal Protective Equipment. Your company also explains first aid and emergency procedures and shows you where to find the MSDSs. Pay close attention to this training.

Hazardous chemicals safety tips

Your companys hazard communication program is designed to help keep you safe. It can be effective only with your help. Heres how you can do your part. Know where to find information about the hazardous substances you work with. Wear Personal Protective Equipment at your job site to reduce your exposure to risk. Practice good personal hygiene to reduce your exposure to hazardous substances. Read and understand product warning labels and the Material Safety Data Sheet. Listen carefully to safety training, and check out your companys hazard communication program. Check with your supervisor if you have any questions about working safely with hazardous substances. Ipoh: Seorang lelaki maut selepas terjatuh dari tingkat lima Wisma Kota Emas di Jalan Datuk Tahwil Azhar, di sini, kelmarin. Dalam kejadian jam 9.30 malam itu, Liew Soon Lee, 26, dari Taman Cempaka di sini, dipercayai terjatuh ketika sedang menyelenggara dan membersihkan penyaman udara bersama rakannya di bangunan itu. Ketua Polis Daerah, Asisten Komisioner Sum Chang Keong, berkata mangsa ditemui mati dalam keadaan terbaring dan berlumuran darah. Tiada unsur jenayah "Mayat mangsa dihantar ke Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun (HRPB) untuk dibedah siasat sebelum dituntut keluarganya pagi tadi (semalam)," katanya di sini, semalam. Laporan bedah siasat mendapati mangsa mati akibat terjatuh dari tempat tinggi dan tiada unsur jenayah. Chang Keong turut menasihati pekerja yang terdedah kepada risiko bahaya supaya sentiasa mematuhi langkah keselamatan ketika melakukan kerja penyelenggaraan terutama di bangunan tinggi untuk mengelakkan kejadian tidak diingini berlaku.

MERU: "Mesin membuat barangan elektronik yang sedang digunakan tiba-tiba meletup menyebabkan semua pekerja berhampiran lari dan tidak sempat menyelamatkan barang seperti dompet, telefon bimbit dan barangan berharga lain," kata seorang pekerja mengenai kebakaran sebuah kilang memproses barang kejuruteraan di Jalan Haji Salleh, di sini, petang semalam. Pekerja yang enggan dikenali itu berkata, ketika kejadian jam 4 petang, pekerja kilang itu dikejutkan dengan letupan sebuah mesin yang beroperasi. "Tiba-tiba sebuah mesin meletup menyebabkan api merebak dengan cepat ke mesin lain dan rakan sekerja tergamam sebelum masingmasing melarikan diri ke tempat selamat. "Tapi, saya bersyukur kerana rakan sekerja sempat menyelamatkan diri dan tidak berlaku insiden yang tidak diingini seperti kecederaan dan kehilangan nyawa," katanya. Pekerja itu berkata, kebakaran berpunca daripada mesin elektronik yang dipercayai sudah panas kerana terlalu lama digunakan untuk memproses barangan kejuruteraan. Sementara itu, Ketua Bomba dan Penyelamat Zon Klang, Mohd Hamizal Ainuddin berkata, pihaknya menerima panggilan berkenaan kebakaran itu jam 4.04 petang sebelum sepasukan pegawai dan anggota dari Balai Bomba dan Penyelamat Sungai Pinang bergegas ke tempat kejadian. "Seramai 24 anggota bomba dari Balai Bomba Sungai Pinang, Pelabuhan Klang dan Kota Raja terbabit dalam operasi memadamkan kebakaran itu berikutan kebakaran yang agak serius," katanya. Hamizal berkata, kebakaran itu berjaya dikawal jam 4.57 petang dan punca serta jumlah kerugian kebakaran itu masih dalam siasatan.

Melalui kerjasama strategik dengan akhbar harian nombor satu negara, Harian Metro (HM), mulai hari ini maklumat mengenai keselamatan dan kesihatan pekerjaan disiarkan menerusi artikel atau grafik yang diterbit dalam akhbar ini pada setiap Jumaat. Pengerusi NIOSH Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye berkata, selaras jumlah pembaca HM yang majoritinya belia bekerja, beliau terpanggil menjalin kerjasama itu dengan objektif utama membudayakan amalan keselamatan dan kesihatan pekerjaan. "Justeru, kerjasama ini diharap mampu mendidik masyarakat termasuk suri rumah mengenai penjagaan keselamatan dan kesihatan ketika bekerja dalam apa juga sektor," katanya pada sidang media selepas melancarkan Kerjasama Info Keselamatan dan Kesihatan Pekerjaan Antara HM dan NIOSH bersama Pengarang Kumpulan HM Datuk Mustapa Omar di ibu pejabat NIOSH di sini, semalam. Kuala Lumpur: Usaha membudayakan keselamatan dan kesihatan di tempat kerja perlu dipertingkat bagi melahirkan sebuah masyarakat yang peka dan bertanggungjawab terhadap keselamatan diri. Bagi mencapai tujuan itu, Pengerusi Institut Keselamatan dan Kesihatan Pekerjaan Negara (NIOSH), Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, berkata usaha mempromosinya juga perlu sentiasa dilakukan dan dihebah kepada sasaran khususnya pekerja. Nilai: Konvoi lima bersaudara ke tempat kerja berakhir tragedi menyayat hati apabila dua daripadanya maut selepas motosikal ditunggang merempuh belakang lori yang rosak di lorong kecemasan, di Kilometer 276.2, Lebuhraya Utara-Selatan (Plus) arah selatan, di sini, semalam. Dalam kejadian jam 8.10 pagi itu, kedua-dua mangsa dipercayai warga Indonesia itu menaiki motosikal Suzuki Shogun 120, maut di tempat kejadian akibat cedera parah di kepala. Sumber berkata, lebih menyayat hati adik mangsa dikenali sebagai Yasir, 20-an, yang berada di depan terkejut sebaik menyaksikan kakaknya terpelanting menerusi cermin sisi motosikal dinaiki dilihat meraung dan memeluk mayat itu. Jurucakap polis berkata, mangsa lelaki dikenali sebagai Suhar, 32, dipercayai bekerja kontrak di Sungai Gadut, di sini, manakala isterinya, Rina Nigfih, 30-an, operator kilang di Shah Alam, dari Yogyakarta. "Kedua-dua mangsa dari Kapar, Klang menghala ke Sungai Gadut, Seremban, dalam perjalanan ke tempat kerja suaminya. "Siasatan awal mendapati, mangsa tiba di tempat kejadian dipercayai gagal mengawal motosikal lalu terbabas sebelum merempuh bucu kanan belakang lori diletakkan di laluan kecemasan akibat kerosakan tayar kanan di bahagian depan.

"Rempuhan kuat itu menyebabkan kedua-dua mangsa tercampak beberapa meter di atas jalan sebelum ditemui orang ramai dalam keadaan tidak bernyawa," katanya kepada Harian Metro, di sini, semalam. Katanya, kemalangan berlaku sebelum sempat mekanik menukar tayar rosak pada lori satu tan itu membawa barangan runcit. "Ketika itu, kon kecemasan diletakkan sebagai tanda amaran di laluan kecemasan tetapi mangsa tidak menyedari lalu gagal mengawal motosikal ditunggang dan merempuh lori berkenaan di tempat kejadian. "Mayat kedua-dua mangsa dibawa ke Hospital Tuanku Jaafar Seremban (HTJS) untuk dibedah siasat sebelum urusan pengebumian," katanya. Katanya, punca kejadian masih lagi dalam siasatan dan polis meminta saksi kejadian menghubungi Ibu Pejabat Polis Daerah (IPD) Nilai di talian 06-7991222 atau balai polis berhampiran bagi membantu siasatan," katanya.

Kuala Lumpur: Dua maut membabitkan penunggang dan pembonceng motosikal dalam kemalangan di Kilometer 3.5 Lebuhraya Besraya, semalam. Dalam kejadian jam 10.30 pagi semalam berhampiran pusat beli-belah The Mines, Serdang, sebuah motosikal ditunggangi dua lelaki hilang kawalan dan melanggar pembahagi jalan menyebabkan kedua-dua mangsa terjatuh di atas jalan raya. Sumber trafik berkata, mangsa yang menaiki motosikal Honda C100 dirempuh sebuah lori yang tidak sempat mengelak menyebabkan kedua-duanya meninggal dunia di tempat kejadian. Katanya, penunggang, Noorzahrim Hisyam Taharim, 28, dan pembonceng, Muhamad Narzeri Wahab, 40, dalam perjalanan dari Balakong ke Seri Kembangan.

"Siasatan awal mendapati kedua-dua mangsa meninggal dunia akibat parah di kepala manakala pemandu lori pula tidak cedera.
"Mayat kedua-duanya dihantar ke Hospital Serdang untuk bedah siasat dan siasatan terperinci kejadian itu masih dilakukan," katanya.
