(A) THORY: 1. STEAM NOZZLES: Introduction of various types of steam nozzles, flow through nozzle, sonic velocity, mach number, entropy changes with frication, nozzle efficiency, effect of friction on velocity of steam, throat and exit area of nozzle, shape of nozzle for uniform pressure drop, mass flow, max. Mass flow condition, critical pressure in nozzle, critical pressure ratio for adiabatic and frictionless flow, general relationship between area, velocity and pressure in nozzle flow, effect of friction on critical pressure ratio, supersaturated flow in nozzle, effect of variation of back pressure, parameters affecting the performance of nozzle. 2. STEAM TURBINES: Principle of operation of steam turbines, classification of steam turbines, back pressure and pass out turbine, mixed pressure turbine, combination of turbines. (a) Impulse Turbines: Compounding of impulse steam turbine, velocity diagrams of impulse turbines. Effect of blade friction on Velocity diagram, forces on the blade and work-done by the blade, Diagram efficiency, influences of ratio of blade speed to steam speed on blade efficiency single stage impulse turbine, efficiency of multistage impulse turbine with single row wheel, most economical ratio of blade speed to speed, for a two row velocity compounded wheel, impulse blade sections, choice of blade angles, blade heights in velocity compounded impulse turbine. (b) Impulse Reaction Turbine: Velocity diagram of reaction, impulse reaction turbine, similar blade section, half degree reaction, (Persons turbine) Height of reaction turbine blading, operation of impulse blading with varying heat drop, impulse reaction turbine blade section. i. Governing of Steam Turbine: Study of throttle governing, nozzle control governing, throttle and nozzle control governing, by pass governing,by pass governing of reaction turbine. ii. Losses in Steam Turbines:Study of different types of losses and their preventing methods. a. Regenerative Feed Heating: Reheating and Regenerative: Reheating Cycles : Rankine Cycle, regenerative feed heating cycle T-S and h-s diagram of these cycles, actual cycle on T-S & h-s diagram; different types of feed heating arrangement. Reheating of steam; reheating cycle; combination of regenerative and reheating. b. Rotary Compressors: General equation rotating mechanism, Eulers energy equation, classification of dynamic rotary compressors. i. Construction, components of centrifugal compressors; working of a compressor; velocity diagram, working theory, calculation of pressure ratio effect of change in pressure ratio, static and total pressures, static and total temperatures, work required, power input factor, pressure coefficient, slip, stodels formula, stanitzs formula, compressor efficiency, inlet section, pre-whirl.inpeller passage, the effect of impeller blade shape on performances compressor diffuser, losses in centrifugal compressors, surging and chocking, specific speed of compressor. ii. Axial Flow Compressors : Principle of operation, performance analysis, velocity diagram; symmetric stages, energy transfer; aerofoil analysis, two dimensional flow with friction, lift and drag forces, pressure rise blading, efficiency, losses in terms of air angles, drag coefficient, coefficient of performance, flow coefficient, pressure coefficient, work coefficient, compressor characteristics.
(c) PRACTICAL/ORAL : Oral examination based on report prepared and syllabus mentioned above. (d) TERM WORK : Preparation of report based on design calculations study of machine construction and analytical study on syllabus mentioned above. (e) TEXT BOOK : 1. THOERY : 1. S.I. and C.I. Engine, suction process and charging efficiency. 2. C.I. Engine: Methods of fuel mixture formation and fuel spray formation, phases and duration of fuel injection, fuel injection parameters valve timing diagram types of combustion chambers, phases combustion, ignition lag period, abnormal combustion, its courses and remedies. 3. S.I.Engines : Fuel moisture formation, construction and working of simple and zenith carburetors, mixture requirement types of combustion chambers, phases of combustion, abnormal combustion, its causes and remedies scavenging. 4. Fuel additives : Names and their purposes, octane and cetane rating of fuel, knocking phenomena, its cause and remedy, Type and endurance test of I.C. Engine as per I.S. 5. Supercharging of I.C. engines: Objectives, effect of supercharging of performance of the engine, supercharging limits. 6. Automobile engineering : Auto chassis and suspension systems, types of chassis frames, objectives of suspension system, its principle, types, such as independent front and rear suspension, types of springs air suspension, shock absorbers, spring and upspring weight. 7. Auto transmission system: Purpose, types, constant mesh transmission, semi automatic transmission-over drive automatic hydraulic transmission, types of gear boxes- sliding and constant mesh gear boxes, synchromesh three and four speed gear boxes. 8. Steering & steering geometry: Type of steering gears construction and operation of steering mechanism, under steer and over steer wheel geometry. 9. Brakes and braking systems: Classification of brakes, hydraulic brake system, master cylinder power assisted brakes vacuum servo assisted brakes, air brake fluid, bleeding of brakes. PRACTICAL / ORAL: Oral/Practical examination based on journal Prepared and above -mentioned topics. TERM WORK: The laboratory work shall consist of practical/ experiment and study based on above topics.

Controls in M/C tools, NC & CNC machines, Line Transfer Machines. GEAR AND THREADS MANUFACTURING: Different types, Threads manufacturing methods, and tools involved, Study of different gear forming and generating methods with their special features, gears finishing processes. JIGS & FIXTURES : Definition, its usefulness in mass production, design principles, locators & clamps with their types, jig bushes, types of jigs and fixtures for various machining operations. PRESSES AND PRESS WORK: Classification of presses, Classification of dies, cutting actions in dies,clearance, cutting forces, center of pressure design of elements, methods of mounting of punches. Introduction to Non-conventional Machining such as EDM, IBM, ECM, ECG, CM, AJM, wire cut EDM ,Ultrasonic machining, laser beam cutting machining and their applications.
