The birth and/or adoption of the first baby is usually exciting and stressful. c. STAGE 3: FAMILY WITH PRESCHOOL CHILDREN i. A family with preschool children is a busy family. Children at this age demand great deal of time. Attending needs of child and promoting safety are the things we prioritize d. STAGE 4:THE FAMILY WITH SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN i. Parents of school age children learns to expericne responsibility of preparing their children to be able ot function in a complex world ii. Important nursing concerns during family stage: 1. Encouraging a meaningful school experience e. STAGE 5: THE FAMILY WITH ADOLECENT CHILDREN

i. Primary Goal in this stage is to loosen family ties to allow adolescent more freedom and prepare them for life of their own ii. Major cause of death: 1. Homicide 2. Suicide 3. Violence 4. Accidents iii. STD, such as HIV iv. If there is a generation gap between the parents and an adolescent, adolescent may not be able to talk about controversial subjects. f. STAGE 6: THE LAUNCHING CENTER FAMILY i. For families the stage at which children leave to establish their own household is the most difficult stage because it appears to represent the breaking up. ii. Perennial roles change from those of a mother and father to once, removed support people. g. STAGE 7: THE FAMILY OF MIDDLE YEARS i. Having a baby at the timem might be enjoying or exciting h. STAGE 8: THE FAMILY IN RETIREMENT OR OLD AGE i. Families of retirement age account for appox 15-20% of population ii. Families this age are more opt to suffer from chronic and disabling condition than younger ones iii. Gives suppot and advice to younger adults who are just beginning.
