POLICY : STUDY SUPPORT
Definition

“The purpose of Study Support is to raise achievement by motivating young people to


become more effective learners through activities which enrich the curriculum and improve
core skills. These activities take place on a voluntary basis out of school hours”.

The Code of Practice: Study Support at Bishop Challoner Catholic Collegiate School Study
Support is offered to all students irrespective of race, gender or religion. The programme of
study are designed to support the individual students develop physical and intellectual skills.

Process

Study Support Activities at Bishop Challoner include:

• Mentoring
• Artistic and creative activities
• Space and support for examination revision and coursework
• Sporting and other physical activities
• Subject specific activities (including minority subjects and extension activities)

• A quiet place to do homework
• ICT
• Debating in a mock court environment
• Provision targeted at particular student groups
• Activities to boost core and key skills

Organisation

• The Learning Zone operates between 3.20 pm and 4.20 pm Monday to Friday during term
time.
• During February half term and Easter the Learning Zone operates for KS3, KS4 and Sixth
Form
• A timetable detailing Out of School Hours Learning is revised and published to each year
group
• Attendance at the Learning Zone is voluntary
• Staff may contact parents to encourage attendance at particular activities
• The library is supervised by staff between 3.05 pm and 5.00 Monday to Friday during
term time
• During the summer holidays, the Summer University runs for Year 8 students
• Business mentors from standard charter work with KS4 students and Deloitte and Touché
work with KS5 students

Administration

• A register must be taken at each session and returned to the Study Support Coordinator
• An outline of the planned programme for a term must be submitted to the Study Support
Coordinator
• If there are insufficient number attending an activity it may be cancelled

Staffing

A number of different groups are involved in delivering study support activities including
teachers, support staff, students, business mentor, EBP, Sports clubs and a theatre company.

Rewards

Work is displayed publicly in school


Teams are given medals/certificates/cups
Students are given credits

Evaluation

The effectiveness of study support is monitored and evaluated by:

• Questionnaires
• Attendance rates
• Qualitative feedback
• Participation
