Stacy had paid a visit to Green Gables? Anne had reading the novel Ben Hur during class when she was supposed to be doing Canadian History. What was the real reason for Miss Stacy's visit? Miss Stacy wanted to organize a class among her advanced students so they could study for the entrance exams into Queen's, eventually becoming teachers. What incident is Anne referring to when she states that she has, "tasted the bitterness of death"? She is referring to the fact that Diana would not be in the Queen's class for extra lessons. She feels awful when she sees Diana leaving the first time while Anne herself is to remain behind for extra lessons. Why was there open rivalry between Gilbert and Anne? Both were determined to work diligently and be first in their class. Why had Marilla not been at the Aid meeting on Thursday? Marilla told Mrs. Lynde that Matthew had had a bad spell with his heart on Thursday and she didn't want to leave him alone. Chapter 31 Why does Marilla allow Anne so much freedom during her summer vacation? The doctor sent word to Marilla that Anne should be spending plenty of time outdoors. Marilla imagines the worst, consumption (now known as tuberculosis), and insists that Anne follow the doctor's orders. What "good friends" does Anne retrieve from the attic at the end of the summer? She collects her books from the attic. Why is Marilla crying? Marilla tells Matthew that she is going to miss Anne when she leaves for school. What is Anne's stumbling-block? Anne is worried about her entrance exams as she is not very good in geometry and considers it her stumbling-block. Chapter 32 Why were the handkerchiefs so damp? The girls had been using them to wipe their tears during Miss Stacy's farewell words.

Why was Ruby in hysterics when Anne reached the boarding house? Ruby discovered a terrible mistake that she had made on her English paper (test). Why did Anne want so desperately to finish well up the list? Anne wanted to finish ahead of Gilbert Blythe. How many names appeared on the pass list and whose name was at the top? There were 200 names on the list with Anne and Gilbert tied for first place although Anne's name was placed at the top of the list.

Chapter 33 Describe how the east gable had changed over the past four years. Anne's room, the east gable, had been quite bare and spartan when she first occupied it. However, with Marilla's help and encouragement, it had become very nicely decorated and looked very dainty. What was the purpose of holding the concert? The guests had got it up to raise funds for the Charlottetown hospital. Who arrived at Green Gables to take Anne to the concert? Billy and Jane Andrews arrived in a buggy to drive Anne and the other girls to the concert at the White Sands. What is meant by the expressions "country bumpkins" and "rustic belles"? The white lace girl in the audience was referring to people such as Anne who she felt were not as cultured as her as they had not grown up in the "city". Why is Anne convinced that she and her friends are rich? Anne is not referring to money but rather their lifestyle, characters, and experiences. In essence, she believes that they are all content with their lives unlike many of the unhappy guests who attended the concert. Chapter 34 What does Matthew mean by Mrs. Spencer's lucky mistake? He is referring to the fact that she brought a girl, Anne, to Green Gables instead of the boy they had requested. Why does Anne decide not to board with Miss Josephine Barry? She lives too far from the academy.

Explain how Josie Pye insults Anne during her brief visit. She tells Anne that she has no self-control, that she has only stopped by for some of Marilla's cake and when one of the boys at school asked Josie about Anne, she told him that Anne was an orphan and nobody really knew much about her. What does Anne resolve to do at the end of the chapter. She hears about the Avery scholarship and resolves to win it as it would pay for four years at Redmond College and she would then be awarded her BA. Chapter 35 What do the Avonlea students do every Friday night if the weather cooperates? They take the new branch train to Carmody where they are usually met by their friends who walk with them to Avonlea. What happened after the Christmas holidays? The students began to take their studies very seriously and gave up going home on Fridays. Who were the three medal contenders according to the other students. It was thought that Gilbert Blythe, Anne Shirley and Lewis Wilson had the best chance of winning the medal. Chapter 36 Why did Anne tell Jane that she would go straight to the girls' dressing room? She didn't have the "moral courage" to see the final marks that were to be posted on the bulletin board and she asked Jane to tell her the results as quickly as possible. What caused Anne to feel a sickening pang of defeat? She heard the boys congratulating Gilbert on becoming the Medalist. What spectacular news did Anne receive? She learns that she has won the Avery scholarship. She is thrilled but her first thoughts are of how pleased Marilla and Matthew will be. Why does Marilla plan on seeing the doctor in June? Marilla has been suffering from recurring pain behind her eyes and changing her glasses hasn't helped. She plans on visiting a specialist who will be visiting the Island (Prince Edward Island) in June. Explain the significance of the last sentence in the chapter. The author is suggesting that something tragic is about to occur in Anne's life.

Chapter 37 What happens to Matthew and why does it happen? He suffers a fatal heart attack when he receives a letter announcing the failure of the Abbey Bank and the consequent loss of his life savings. How do we know that Matthew and the Cuthbert family were well-respected in Avonlea? There is a massive turnout when Matthew's body is waked in the parlour at Green Gables. The teacher may wish to point out that it was very common at the time to wake the bodies in one's own home. Why does Anne say to Marilla, "Oh, just let me cry"? The tears have relieved the pent up hurt and ache inside her. This is a great chapter for class discussions on how different people deal with grief. Young people especially feel terrible guilt when they feel unable to cry when a loved one dies. What story does Marilla reveal to Anne about Gilbert Blythe's father? She tells Anne that she and John Gilbert were very close friends in their younger days but that Marilla refused to forgive him after a quarrel and their relationship ended. This anecdote is obviously intended to make the young reader think about Anne's refusal to forgive Gilbert. Chapter 38!!! What did the doctor tell Marilla about her eyes? He told her that she must do nothing to strain her eyes or she would go stone blind within six months. Why had John Sadler from CArmody paid a visit to Marilla at Green Gables? He had heard that Marilla intended to sell Green Gables and he wished to buy it. What news does Anne tell Marilla about the scholarship. She informs Marilla that she will not be accepting the scholarship and has opted instead to take a teaching job in Carmody. How old will Anne be when she starts her teaching career? She is presently sixteen and a half. Students should be reminded that this was not unusual and that as recently as 1960, students as young as fifteen were hired to teach in isolated elementary schools. What news does Mrs. Lynde bring to Anne about Gilbert Blythe. She tells Anne that Gilbert has withdrawn his application and recommended they hire Anne for the school in Avonlea. Gilbert intends to teach in White Sands.

Describe Gilbert and Anne's conversation at the end of the final chapter. They both agree to become friends and help one another with their studies. The reader is left wondering whether or not this will lead to romance.
