Hi Pepito today I will talk about how to explain how to solve a system of equation. How to do a system of equations in two and three variables equations, but first Im going to explain on what is a system of equation. A system of equations is a collection of two or more equations with a same set of unknowns. In solving a system of equations, we try to find values for each of the unknowns that will satisfy every equation in the system. The equations in the system can be linear or non-linear. The problem can be expressed in narrative form or the problem can be expressed in algebraic form. Example of a narrative statement of a system of the equations: The air-mail rate for letters to Europe is 45 cents per half-ounce and to Africa as 65 cents per half-ounce. If Shirley paid $18.55 to send 35 half-ounce letters abroad, how many did she send to Africa? Then an example of a algebraic statement of the same system of the equations: 0.45x+0.65y=18.55; x+y=35. In a system of an equation there is also a variable in this equation. There are two and three variable equations that exist, and that could be solved. In this next paragraph I will explain to Pepito what a two and three variable equations is, and how to solve it. A two and three variable equations is a problem that has two or three equations that has variables, and that needs their variables to be solved like: (x,y), or (x,y,z). An example of a two variable equation is A total of $12,000 is invested in two funds paying 9% and 11% simple interest. If the yearly interest is $1,180, how much of the $12,000 is invested at each rate? (1) : x+y=$12,000, (2) : 0.09x+0.11y=$1180 Solution: in the Method of Elimination: The process of elimination involves four steps: Step 1: Change equation (1) by multiplying equation (1) by to obtain a new and equivalent equation (1). (1): x+y=$12,000, (New1) : -0.09x-0.09y=-$1080 Step 2: Add new equation (1) to equation (2) to obtain equation (3). (New 1) :-0.09x 0.09y= -$1080, (2): 0.09x+0.11y=$1180, (3): 0.02y=100, y=$5,000 Step 3: Substitute in equation (1) and solve for x. x+y=12,000, x+5,000=12,000; x=7,000 Step 4: Check answers in equation (2). 0.09x+0.11y=$1180, 0.09($7,000)+0.11$5,000 = 1,180.
Then going in to three variable equations the example is John inherited $25,000 and invested part of it in a money market account, part in municipal bonds, and part in a mutual fund. After one year, he received a total of $1,620 in simple interest from the three investments. The money market paid 6% annually, the bonds paid 7% annually, and the mutually fund paid 8% annually. There was $6,000 more invested in the bonds than the mutual funds. Find the amount John invested in each category. x+y+z=$25,000 (1), 0.06x+0.07y+0.08z=$1,620 (2), y-z=$6,000 (3). I am going to solve this equation by using substitution. The process of substitution involves several steps:
Step 4: Substitute this value of in equation (5). This will give you an equation in one variable. 0.06x+0.15z=$1,200 0.06($19,000-2z)+0.15z=$1,200 0.03z=60
Step 6: Substitute this value of in equation (4) and solve for. x+2z=$19,000 x+2($2,000)=$19,000 x=$15,000
Step 7: Substitute for and for in equation (1) and solve for.
The solutions: $15,000 is invested in the money market account, $8,000is invested in the municipal bonds, and $2,000 is invested in mutual funds. Step 8: Check the solutions:
$15,000+$8,000+$2,000=$25,000 - Yes 0.06($15,000)0.07($8,000)+0.08($2,000)=1,620 - Yes $8,000-$2,000=$6,000 Yes In conclusion Pepito this is what a system of equation is, what it means, what a variable equation is and, how it is worked in different ways in two or three variable equations. Pepito now teach the world what I taught you in systems of equations that is being used in daily life .
