VSS Repository can be backed up in two ways. 1. Archiving the project and restoring it on newly created VSS Database.

This method of backup can be used to take whole backup including the settings, file versions, pinned files. Performing the back up in this way has two flaws We need to restore the back up on the same database from where the backup is taken. We cannot delete Root ($/) here in this method. Note: This require admin credentials to archive the Projects/Subprojects 2. Copy the files at OS level and Paste it in new location. Make sure that no one is using the database and that Analyze will not begin to run while you are backing up the database. Copy the following folders:

When you follow this procedure, you can do a full restore of the database by replacing the existing Users, Temp and Data folders as well as the Users.txt and Srcsafe.ini files with the copied versions. You can also use this procedure to move the database to another location by placing the copied files into a new folder. To open the database, on the File menu in the Visual SourceSafe Explorer, click Open SourceSafe Database to browse to the new location.

Note: This doesnt require admin credentials to archive the Projects/Subprojects Archiving/ Restoring a Project: 1. Steps to Archive a project: Select menu option: Archive Archive Projects: The following window is displayed:

Traverse down the project hierarchy to select a project or a sub project for archival. Click on OK button: The following window is displayed:

Click on Add button to add more projects or sub projects for archival. Follow step I onwards again, in case the Add button is pressed. Again the newly added project or sub project will appear in the Projects to archive list. In case a project, added to be archived, is no longer needed to be archived; Select the project and click on Remove button. *Note the remove button will be activated only when a project is selected in the Projects to archive list. Click on Next button: The following window is displayed:

Specify by browsing the archival file name. This option holds good for the following step. Save the data, by either of the following options: o Save the data to the file and leaving the data in its current state intact, by selecting Save data to file option. o Save the data to the file, deleting the current data, by selecting Save data to file, then delete from database to save space. *Note: This option will save space. In case when the current data needs to be deleted, without archiving, select Delete data permanently option. Click on Next button: The following window is displayed:

Select archival option: o Archive all of the data option to archive the entire data in the projects mentioned to be archived. o Archive this version and older option; Specify a version no. in Version text box, to archive data with the mentioned version. Add a comment. This is optional. Click on Finish button: The following window is displayed:

Click on OK button. 1. Steps to Restore a project: Select menu option: Archive Restore Projects: The following window is displayed:

Select the archival file by browsing and selecting the archival file. *Note: the Next button will be Finish button until unless an archival file is selected. Click on Next button: The following window is displayed:

Do the following: o Select a project, to be restored, in Select the projects that you would like to restore to the database list and check out Display subprojects check box to display the sub projects within the selected project. o To select all the projects, displayed in Select the projects that you would like to restore to the database list, to be restored, click on Select All button. o To de-select all the projects, displayed in Select the projects that you would like to restore to the database list, click on Deselect All button. o Click on Next button: The following window is displayed:

To restore, do either of the following: Select Restore to the project the item was archived from option to restore the item to the project, it was archived from. Select Restore the project to a different location option and bowse for a different location by clicking on Browse button, to restore the item to a different location in the project. Add a comment. This is optional. Click on Finish button: The following window is displayed:
