Academic achievement is celebrated at Cardinal Newman where every student is given the support, tools and opportunities to succeed. With a student to counselor ratio of 1:87 (compared with 1:450+ at most other schools), college planning begins in freshman year with a goal of maximizing every students opportunities. A four point grading scale is used for regular college preparatory courses. Advanced Placement, honors, and accelerated courses are weighted with an extra grade point (5 point scale).

One Semester of course work equals 5 credits, 10 credits equals 1 year of course work. Taking seven courses each semester for four years and completing community service allows the student to complete 270 credits. Credit requirements listed under graduation requirements are the minimum requirements for graduation. Additional course work in Mathematics, Science, and Foreign Language is recommended by the UC and California State University systems.

nAdvanced Placement Program


(AP) The Cardinal Newman AP curriculum is based on a vigorous college preparatory program preparing high level, qualified students for the AP test and college credit. We offer a total of 10 AP courses, 6 Honors Courses, and 2 Accelerated Courses.

National Merit Scholars In just the last five years, Cardinal Newman has been honored to educate five National Merit Finalists and ten Commended Scholars. California Scholarship Federation 44% of our students proudly wear the CSF Life Member sash at graduation. An impressive 99% of Cardinal Newman students attend college, 80% at four-year universities and 20% at a junior community college before typically transferring to a four-year institution.

Cardinal Newman takes pride in the fact that 90% of students take college entrance exams. The average percentage of students taking college entrance exams in Sonoma County is 40%. Cardinal Newman Students are prepared for College Due to the rigorous demands of our college preparatory curriculum, our students experience less of a drop in GPA going from high school to college than most other students in California. While the college GPA of most California students drops a full grade point, Cardinal Newman graduates experience minimal decline in their GPA (less than .09).

A creative breadth of twenty-four arts, music and performance courses gives a voice to every student. In addition to regularly contributing to our weekly video cast, students can participate in an annual Art Show, So Show Me Music Showcase and two drama productions each year. There are also 21 clubs on campus exploring virtually every area of interest from the arts to athletics to academics.

With 26 sports programs and 59 teams balancing competition with collaboration, Cardinal Newmans scholar athletes consistently and successfully compete at the championship level. Cardinal Newman was honored to receive the North Coast Section Award of Excellence for ranking fourth among 170 Northern California schools whose students have excelled both on and off the field.
