My First O-Ride
By C/AB Yarxzelayth Cardenas
My first O-ride was amazing. Controlling the aircraft and learning how everything worked. I also loved the view; it isnt something everyone gets to see every day. Thank You, Civil Air Patrol and all of its members. If it were not for you, I wouldnt have had a great experience.

Cadet Matthew Rennick

I knew one day this would happen, but I didnt know it would be so soon. Im telling you about my first time flying an airplane. I know most of you cadets have already been on an Orientation flight, but I hadnt. The time I got in my grandmas car, I knew what was going to happen, I was going to go up in the sky and fly an airplane. I had a little trouble getting there but after the hour and a half drive, I was finally there. My partner went first when we took off, it was bumpy but cool. After my partner was done, it was my turn. I was really nervous at first but once I knew that the plane wouldnt get hurt, I was ok. Flying was a big opportunity for me. Flying is really fun and I encourage you to take an O-Flight.

Which one are you?

Followership, Leadership, or Both?
By C/CMSgt Russell Console
The Founding Fathers of the United States, established a government in which no one branch can overpower another. The Congress cannot pass laws that the President sees as harmful to the nation, and the President cannot go beyond the Constitutional limits of his own power without the Judicial System stepping in. In this way, each branch has to be accountable for its own actions as well as being proactive in running and improving the country. The Civil Air Patrol cadet program emphasizes accountability in the followership phase so that once in the leadership phase, a cadet can make decisions which follow the rules put in place while still teaching others and accomplishing their goal. Followership is essentially the ability to imitate others and act in accordance to their instructions. Another name that can be used in place of followership is personal leadership. A follower does not lead others, however must manipulate their own actions to be most efficient in achieving their goals. Often times a follower is part of a team, or flight in which every member relies on the others. Take a football team for example. Every position on the field has a job that he must finish for the team to win. If an offensive lineman fails to block his man from the quarterback, it results in a sack and a loss of yardage. The interdependence on each other is what drives followers to complete their tasks. However, who determines what job each person has? A good leader must have the capability to assign a goal and a path to complete it as well as ensure that each member of the group does what is needed to accomplish the goal.

WELCOME to Squadron 47!!!

When CyberPatriot Comes in Handy: An Eyewitness Account

Last week my computer was hijacked by the Smart virus. I couldn't get to my forms, files, email , anything! Very disabling!! My techie husband couldn't budge the beast, and a neighbor who does forensic IT had no additional suggestions Then. Bobby sat down, disabled and stashed the virus out of harm's way so we could save all my info/books, etc. Thank you, CyberPatriot Training Program! He used what he learned to sidestep the problem . Here's a testimonial advocating yet again, the value CAP adds to the nation and it's people!! Best to all, Beverly Hawkinson

Super Stem Saturday

Can I get a Hoo-Rah?!

Members of Skyhawks Composite Squadron 47 recently participated in the Super Stem Saturday hosted by California State University San Marcos. More than a thousand children their families attended the one-day event that featured interactive demonstrations, hands-on exhibits, talks with scientists and engineers, and hands-on learning experiments in the physical, chemical and biological sciences. Thats were Squadron 47 came in. The Civil Air Patrol members hosted a Goddard Rocket making Station and recruiting booth. At the Goddard Rocket Station cadets and senior members helped over 400 kids construct the foam rocket from the AEX curriculum. There was a line to make the rockets all day and as the kids made the rockets other members were able to talk with Parents and Teachers attending the event about CAP and what it has to offer. Interest was high and everyone had a great time. It was a very successful day, Squadron 47 was able to share Aerospace Education with the community and spread the word about the Civil Air Patrol, and we are excited about making this an annual activity for the Squadron. The members that helped make Super Stem Saturday a success are: C/LTC Michael Chung, C/B Yozlaynee Aragon, C/B Yarxzelayth Cardenas, C/Amn Morgan McMillion, C/SSgt Spencer French, C/SrA Samuel Cho and the Senior Members are: Lt Col Brian Billing, Capt Nancy Nelson, 2nd Lt Allen French, 2nd Lt. Hanna Chung, 2nd Lt Robert McMillion and Maj Audrey DiGiantomasso.
Once you build them, you want to launch them! C/B Yozlaynee Aragon, and C/B Yarxzelayth Cardenas show students how to launch the Goddard Rockets that members of Skyhawks Composite Squadron 47 helped them build at the Second Annual Super STEM Saturday at California State University, San Marcos. It was a community event to encourage the exploration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math by students all over San Diego County. Squadron 47 also ran a flight simulator and recruiting booth at the event.
