ENGLCOM Karl Angelo delos Santos Samuel Matthew Yolo C31 Introduction There are a lot of similarities between

the Jewish culture and the Filipino culture. After watching an Israeli film about a Jewish mans struggle to uphold his values and traditions, I could see how similar the Jewish customs and traditions are with our own. The Jewish people are known to be very hospitable. They have a religious festival called the sukkot or sukkah where they would build makeshift houses and they would welcome any guest and feed them in those makeshift houses. It just shows the hospitable trait of Jewish people that is also evident in Filipinos. We, Filipinos, are known for our hospitality. One article even said: No other trait of the Filipino is more known the world over than his being a hospitable host. A foreigner new to the Philippines is usually treated to genuine hospitality in many ways-an invitation to dinner or night entertainment can go as far as an invitation to spend a night in the house of the Filipino host. It is not uncommon for a guest to be accommodated in the best room of the house. Dont feel ill at ease if your host appears to have gone out of his way to make you feel comfortable. Hospitality is deeply entrenched among the Filipinos, hence it is only natural for host to welcome a total stranger to his house. The Jewish and Filipinos are both deeply religious. They both have a lot of religious festivals and celebrations all year-round. Also, there is this trait Filipinos have that can also be observed by the Jewish and that is called the Bayanihan spirit. According to one article: Bayanihan or the spirit of helping one another is said to have been inherited by the Filipinos from their Malay forefathers. In the rural areas, bayanihan is reflected in many ways. During the planting and harvest seasons, all members of the family and neighbors help out without expecting payment in return. Helping one another is also carried out in such activities as when having a party where neighbors, friends and relatives help in cleaning and decorating the house, cooking, setting the table and entertaining the guests. Critical Questions How will God be good if you are doing nothing but pray? (Relying on God) Following faith is good, but the inability to obey, what it is? (Poverty) God doesn't allow abortion, thus for the poor people He might allow them to have prevention. (Birth control or contraception) Hospitality is a good trait of Filipino, but is it good to be generous all the time? God will always tell us to share, but when and what should we share?
