February 2013
Ash Wednesday
This year on Ash Wednesday, February 13th, the sanctuary will be open from 6:00 a.m. till 6:00 p.m. There will be two self-paced options, in which one can participate. The first will be a contemplative style reading, which will lead one through scripture readings, prayer, confession, imposition of the ashes (administered by a staff member), reflective readings, and a final piece of scripture. The second option which will be available, will involve stations to visit which will also effectively walk one through, with a more kinesthetic approach, scripture readings, prayers, confession, physical activity, and a reflection time. Everyone is welcome, and will have the choice to do both options, only one, or a combination of both if they like. Our hope and prayer is to create a space in which you can retreat from your day, enter into the presence of our Holy God, and take as much time as you need to prepare yourself to begin the Lenten season. We invite you to come at a time that is convenient for you to begin with us the 40 days of the Lenten season.

For the time they were able to get physical rest and physical activity through hiking and enjoying the beauty they find in various areas in the US. For the spiritual refreshment from spending time in the Word, in prayer and worship Please pray for our future plans, that we hear clearly from the Lord as to which overseas team we should join, and when. Continue to pray for Brad's studies in Agroforestry, that he learns what will best prepare him for the work He has for us in the future. Pray for Lisa's studies in Spiritual Direction, especially as she begins "practice" spiritual direction with women this month. Pray for a boost in our financial support in order to finish our course work and make an overseas trip this summer to visit new teams and projects. Continue to lift up our daughters -- Anna as she looks for a full-time teaching job, and Mary as she studies at Biola.

Update on Mossai Sanguma: Mossai Sanguma attended Pasadena Covenant Church for many years until his graduation from Fuller Theological Seminary in 2003. He returned to Africa to serve as president of the CEUM (the Congo Covenant Church) until he completed his second term in 2012. He is now the regional director in the Democratic Republic of Congo for Covenant Kids Congo, which is powered by World Vision. Our church participated in the Covenant-wide observance of Hope Sunday last November, in which individuals were encouraged to support one or more children, who live in DR Congo, on a monthly basis. For more information, go to http://www.covchurch.org/news/2012/02/03/world-vision-covenant-launch-historicpartnership/. Because Mossai is now in a paid position, he is no longer financially supported as a crosscultural worker by Pasadena Covenant Church, but we continue to uphold him in prayer.

Sunday Mornings for Kids at 10:30 a.m. Godly Play (Preschool) Focus: Seeing Jesus Club 145 (Gradeschool) Focus: Journey to the Promised Land
In our Kids Ministry, we will pursue our look up! goal by focusing on Gods activity in the Bible stories we explore each week. Godly Play (preschool) does this through the use of thoughtful wondering questions that invite the children to enter the stories imaginatively. In Club 145, gradeschoolers maximize their growing reading skills by learning how to use the Bible themselves to question, explore, and understand Gods Word. During Jan-Mar., the Godly Play (preschool) stories will focus on Jesus life and ministry as we begin the Lenten time leading up to Easter. We will particularly look for what each story shows us about Jesuswho he is, why he came, and what we can learn about his heart for the world. Club 145 (gradeschool) stories will continue our survey of the Old Testament as we look at the journey of the people of God to the promised land through the stories of Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and Moses. As we enter into Lent (Easter season) in Feb. and March, we will connect those Old Testament stories with the Lenten stories the gradeschoolers are hearing at 9:00 a.m. in Journey to the Cross 2, through common themes and images: water/forgiveness; bread/ reconciliation; rock/ prayer; cross/ sacrifice; seeds/ new life. A special highlight will be a Passover service on Mar. 10th that will help kids see the connection between that ancient celebration and the Easter story.

Weekly Programs
Oikas: Sunday Mornings, 9 a.m. 10:15 a.m.
Oikas is the Greek work for House. On Sunday Mornings, we come to the House of God to dive into Gods word through authentic worship and relevant Biblical teaching. Oikas is a place where we can connect with each other and with God in a deep and authentic way.
Selah: Wednesday Night Worship and Small Groups, 6:30 8:30 p.m.
Selah is a great starting point for plugging into PCSM! Selah is a word that is used throughout the book of Psalms to remind us to Pause or Stop and listen and thats exactly what we want to do on Wednesday nights! At Selah we take a break from our busy week to play crazy games, worship though song, and get to know each other on a deeper level in gender and age specific small groups.

Yes! You are right, it is around that time again! For those of you utterly confused and lost, its that magical time of year in which we officially kick off our Life Group:Community Groups(CG). What makes the specific community groups different from say the Life Group:Sunday Morning Groups? I am so glad you asked. Our Life Group:Community Groups(CG) are different in the fact that they meet in the evening hours throughout the week ready to discuss the previous sermon. Hmmm, the sermon you say really? Isnt that just for Sunday morning to take up our time for an hour then forget? We dont think the sermon is just for listening, or background noise while you solve the latest Sudoku puzzle. We believe that God has a message for everyone that is to be found within the sermon Tim prepared through the Spirits leading during the week. Life Group:CG are a place where this message can be explored with other individuals within your church community. We hope it is a time to think about how the Spirit is interacting with you and your church community through the sermon, how we are being shaped and formed by the Spirit. How we can push and be pushed by others into our spiritual growth and into action in our community. Life Group: CGs Spring Semester will be kicked off February 24th and will run until May 5th. But, that is not all! This would be a great time if you have been thinking about joining up with one of our many Life Group: Sunday Morning Groups (SMG). These groups meet at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings here on Pasadena Covenant Churchs campus. I encourage and challenge you to join a Life Group and engage with your Faith Community. And whether it be a Sunday Morning Group or a Community Group, we will all be unified in the fact that we want to get to know one another and lift each other up on this journey we are all taking with our Savior and our God. This semester we ask everyone from the greatest to the least to sign up, even if you have attended any of these groups from day one. Look for a signup table in during the Fellowship time in the courtyard/gym to sign up! Or if you prefer a more digital experience, the QR code found below will take you straight to a page to sign up for a Life Group (for those of you who may have tried this last semester, I apologize there was a glitch in the system and the info you entered never came to us, this year it has been fixed and all systems are go!).
