Quality Statement
This statement is made in good faith following interest expressed from customers in our products. C.A.T.s Profiles are regarded as the highest quality available and this is achieved through our monitored manufacturing process that we employ. Our extruded non-ferrous brass and aluminium products are always subject to a faint slubbing effect along the length of the profile and this is inherent in the material due to the extrusion process and is a characteristic of the metal. Since 1986 our principle objective remains to provide our customers with the very best flooring profiles and accessories available Customers attention is drawn to our company terms and conditions section 7.1 The company reserves the right to alter or change dimensions of goods supplied within reasonable limits having regard to the nature of the goods. Dimensions specified by the company in this catalogue or on other literature, are to be treated as approximate only unless the customer specifically states in writing that exact measurements are required. C.A.T. reserve the right to make product design changes to profiles and accessories in this literature for reasons including improvement of performance and other factors dictated by market forces.

Special Finishes
A selection of C.A.T. products are produced with special finishes. For information on the availability of a finish on a particular product please refer to the relevant product page in this catalogue. Should you require further assistance please contact the C.A.T. sales office. Finishes depicted are representative only and are subject to print interpretation. Samples of finishes are available from BN1 Antique Bronze C.A.T.

Finishes on Brass

Kliks Spectrum Zip

TM

UPVC Clip in systems formable

KLIKS profiles have been designed for simple installation. With versatile height adjustment and pre-drilled bases the Spectrum range is quick and easy to install. Stage 1 Bases are secured to sub floor with a suitable cartridge adhesive and No.6 countersunk screws. Stage 2 Once the base is firmly secured to the sub floor, the flooring can be laid up to the base section. Stage 3 The top section may then be fitted by hand or using a soft mallet if necessary.

Installation Environment
Care should be taken that the profiles are not fitted or stored, prior to fitting, in extreme conditions of cold or warmth. The ideal conditions for fitting are with temperatures in the range of o o 15 C - 25 C. Allowing a period of acclimatization will assist in achieving a satisfactory result. Ensure that when fitting the tops into the bases, the profile section is not heated with hot air guns/hot water, which can lead to the material being inadvertently stretched whilst being fitted into position. If the profiles are stretched during installation they will over time, revert to their original size, leaving gaps at the joints and ends.

Joints
The base profile joints should be staggered with a minimum overlap of 150mm, wherever possible position the joints away from main traffic areas. When using the profiles in curved situations it is recommended that an adhesive fix be also applied into the base (50mm along) at the joints. The following table shows the minimum radii of KLIKS Spectrum curves, when in a KB1 base, at normal room temerature.

Installation
Form base to shape of curve required and affix to sub floor (ensuring that surface is level) with a suitable adhesive and screw fixings. When fitting lengths over 2.715m always overlap top joints by a minimum of 150cm over base joints. Once base is firmly secured floorings can be laid and tops dressed in with a rubber mallet. Material must not be stretched when fitting as this will cause tops to contract and cause shrinkage.

Technical Information Stair Nosings and Edgings

LRV Light Reflective Value
LRV is a measurement which expresses the percentage of light that is reflected from a surface with lighter finishes at the upper end of the scale and darker finishes at the lower. Designers of buildings need to comply with the building regulations applicable to the structure under consideration. Since 2004 guidance has existed on access to and use of buildings. The guidance is particularly concerned with provisions to assist the disabled, including those who are visually impaired. The guidance highlights the need for certain surfaces and features to contrast visually with their surroundings. This is relevant to a wide range of non residential buildings including hospitals, schools, hotels, theatres etc. The current guidance in the regulations and in the relevant codes of practice BS8300:2009 is that adequate visual contrast is provided if the Light Reflective Values (LRV) of the contrasting areas exceeds 30 points, ie the contrast between the stair edging and the floorcovering. The testing equipment used to assess the LRV values on C.A.T. product finishes is a intergrating sphere spectrophotometer.

DESCRIPTION

Stair nosings are manufactured to the highest specification in brass and aluminum. A selection of nosings have serrated treads and others with PVC infills available in a range of colours.

DATA INSTALLATION
It is highly advisable when installing brass and aluminum stair nosings to use screw fixings and a suitable gap filling cartridge adhesive after ensuring that treads and risers are in good order. Advice on adhesives is available by contacting CAT Sales.

PROFILE SELECTION

INSTALLATION: Nosings with Serrated Treads

Choose from nosings in various gauges and shapes to accomodate different step edges and floorings. A number of nosings are designed with a diminished edge for retro installation on hard floorings, including vinyl, terrazzo, wood, etc.

Pre-dilled for screw and adhesive fixing, brass nosings can be supplied with brass plugs to cover screw heads. Alternatively, nosings can be supplied undrilled for adhesive fixing only if requested.

FINISH SELECTION
Brass: Polished Brass Antique Brass Antique Bronze Aluminum: Polished Satin Mill

INSTALLATION: Nosings with PVC Infills

MEASURING STEPS

Retrofit option when installing stair nosings with PVC infills specify retrofit for a neat concealed fixing finish.

Retrofit nosings are supplied cut to size with pre-drilled channel for countersunk screw fixings. On site having secured nosings to tread with screws and adhesive peel away protective cover from adhesive carrier tape. Insert Infill into channel applying pressure ideally with a roller to ensure a good bond along the entire length of the tread. Infills should be fitted at normal room temperature, not in cold environments to avoid the possibility of contraction. Infills supplied oversize for cutting in.

When measuring stair nosings steps should be numbered from the top of the staircase to the bottom indicating floor levels, flights and landings for the cutting and installation plan. Staircases with open strings should be measured oversize by 50mm for cutting in on site. A measuring sheet is available by contacting CAT Sales. Supply Supplied cut to customer sizes or oversize by 50mm for cutting in on site if specified.

Stair Nosing Fabrication

We provide a fabrication service for the forming and shaping of stair nosings in brass and aluminium. When considering selecting a nosing profile please contact our sales office for advice on suitability for forming dependant upon the shape of the step. A template is required in hardboard or a stiff card to work from for each step.

How to Take a Template

Please indicate on all templates Nosing profile. Customer name and job reference. Order number. Top side of template. Edge of tread. Insert colour if PVC insert. Special drilling instructions. Allowance (if any) for new floor covering. When job is required.
Stair Edge

Step edge should be free from existing floor covering. Where required step edge should be made good with repairs before template is taken. Offer card on top of stair tread and with a marker pen draw around curve on underside of card at stair edge. Ensuring line is uniform cut along the mark, then offer shaped card to step and make any adjustments as required.

All curved nosings are supplied oversize for trimming on site.

Stair Nosing Profiles

Mill finish 6063 aluminium alloy, hardened to T6. Carbigrip infill - coloured aggregates with aluminium oxide in cured resin. Carbigrip Colours - yellow, white and black. Slip resistance info is available upon request.

Fixing
Stair Nosings - standard drilling All aluminium profiles, except Olympic 35, are supplied pre-drilled and countersunk for No.8 screws unless otherwise requested. Holes are through the aluminium, centred in the v-groove(s) as shown below:

Hole positions are 75m,m in from ends at approximately 250mm centres.

Recommended Fixings
As with all installations, the substrate must be sound and reasonably level. Any remedial work must be done before installing the profile(s). The heavy duty nature of Carbigrip filled profiles requires that they are always screw fixed. It is also advisable to bed all profiles on to a suitable adhesive to reduce/remove the potential for rattle in the finished installation. The recommended screw size is a No.8 (M5) woodscrew with a countersunk head to suit the standard pre-drilled holes. Always use stainless steel screws (or bolts/nuts if fixing to steelplate). The chosen bedding adhesive must be suitable for external use (recommendations are available) and used in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations. Where fixing has to be by adhesive only, use a product with high strength mechanical properties which is specifically designed for structural bonding (recommendations are available). Cartridge adhesives typically used for fixing decorative nosings; e.g. Gripfill, F32 etc., are not recommended for this purpose.

Stair Nosing Maintenance

To ensure effective anti-slip is maintained and that the edge of the step(s) remains adequately defined, the installed nosings and treads must be cleaned on a regular bases. Cleaning should be carried out by gently scrubbing with a solution of proprietary detergent and warm water. The aluminium profile(s) can be buffed using a fine grade steel wool or similar.

Measuring and Installation Carpet Runners

For rods with turned finials measure the full width of the runner and add a minimum of 100mm for 10, 12.5 and 16mm rods. For 19mm rods, rods with large finials and triangular rods an additional 150mm is desirable having considered width of staircase available. Example; (for reference only)

Measuring for rods with full width carpets

For 12.5mm rods with turned finials, measure the full width of the stairs and deduct a suitable amount for best effect. Check that step widths do not vary dramatically. When installing rods with full width carpet specify top fix eyes available in 12.5mm diameter. Extreme caution must be taken when fixing eyes through carpet. The CAT Sales Office is always happy to provide technical advice and assistance on how to measure the rods and eyes. E.g. 1- rods with turned finials if carpet runner is 686mm (27) Overall rod size required tip to tip is 786mm minimum. E.g. 2 rods with large finials and triangular rods if carpet runner is 686mm (27) Overall rod size required tip to tip is 836mm minimum.

Installation
Fix eyes into tread riser directly alongside edge of carpet runner, leaving a gap of approximately 3mm(1/8) For concrete stairs use rawl plugs for screw fixings. When fixing to timber stairs direct screw fix into tread and riser. Note, if wood is particularly hard it may be required to pilot drill first before fixing with screws. Stair rods are for aesthetic purpose only, always use wooden grippers to fully secure carpet on stairs.

Maintenance Guide
All brass will tarnish with atmosphere. In order to maintain a polished finish on rods, regular polishing is required with a suitable metal polish. Regular polishing is particularly important in public areas where contact with passers by and even beverages can tarnish the surface of the brass. We do not recommend the use of any water based cleaning agents, as this is very likely to accelerate tarnishing and can lead to staining and corrosion. Please note the longer water stains or water based cleaned surface are left unpolished, the more difficult it is to remove stains. Lacquers are not recommended and will prevent tarnishing for a limited period only and at which time it may be required to strip remaining lacquer and repolish rods.

Data provided is not intended as confirmation of product properties and does not constitute a legal contractual relationship, nor should it be used as a basis for ordering products. Our sales personnel are always happy to give customers individual advice on the best way to maintain rods given different situations. For customers with old tarnished rods we are happy to re polish, once having inspected them given an assessment of the level of finish that can be achieved.

Antique Brass and Antique Bronze Rods

Wipe with a dry cloth or duster. Do not use any liquids or metal polishes on these finishes.

Chrome and Nickel Rods

Buff with a dry cloth or duster. A damp cloth may be used for heavily soiled rods but must be dried immediately.

Floor Trim Fabrication

Technical Information on Curved Profiles
A successful product is largely reliant upon the information and quality of templates supplied. Our fabrication department has formed thousands of profiles since our formation and has developed our services to the flooring industry in line with modern trends. Profiles are formed using traditional fabrication methods and computer aided equipment. This mixture of experience, knowledge and technology provides our customers with the confidence to call CAT when its not all straight forward !!! It is sometimes possible to produce curves to a specific radius from plans to a maximum radius of 10m. For curves not of a specific radius (ie shapes) hardboard templates should be supplied accompanied by a sketch of the planned installation. Please allow 25% for material wastage in the curving process. Curves are always supplied oversize for cutting in on site.

We are here to help

For technical advice on the suitability and availablity of profiles for curving, please contact our sales office.

If we dont say yes, we will say we will try it.

Special Services
From our conception we have provided the flooring industry a specialist service. This service includes the production of non standard profiles using two principle forms of manufacturing flooring trims and stair nosings. These are metal and pvc extrusion and section forming from sheet metal. Example of upvc extrusions tool The extrusion process is very versatile but can be costly if only small volumes are required. With this method profiles can be produced (subject to sight of design) in brass, aluminium, upvc and pvc.

Example of section forming The forming method can be much more cost effective for smaller requirements but there can be limitations in design. With this method of manufacture we make sections in brass, aluminium and stainless steel.

In addition to our fabrication and curving service we also provide a laser cutting facility for shaped flat plates and circular curves for fixing around columns. If you have an enquiry for a bespoke profile, call or email CAT sales for technical advice on product production.
