The case of an immodest lady wrestler in Deuteronomy 25:11-12.By: Eslinger, Lyle

M.. Source: Vetus testamentum, 31 no 3 Jl 1981, p 269-281. Abstract: The article demonstrates that the law in Deut 25:11-12 is talionic--the woman is punished with genital mutilation for her assault on the pudenda of her husband's assailant. Support for this reading is sought in an examination of two relevant, parallel uses of the word kap, in Gen 32:26,33, and in Song of Songs 5:5. In both parallels it is suggested that the word kap describes genitals, male or female. With this understanding of kap, Deut 25:11-12 is found to be a talionic prescription of genital mutilation. Finally a literary relationship is suggested between the passages in Deut and Gen. The law in Deut appears to contain a comment on the methods Jacob uses to free himself from the clutches of his adversary.
