SPELL- IT- RIGHT COMPETITION FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL (LEVEL 1 AND 2) Introduction : Spelling is the forming of words from letters according to accepted usage, a sequence of letters composing a word, a statement of rules or conventions on how words are to be written. One purpose of spelling is to learn to decode words so that every word will not have to be memorized. This best done by grouping spelling words by sight and sound. Research has determined that, 75% of the words in our English language can be spell phonetically. For the reminder, we must rely on visual recall. However we must have a good command of phonics, syllabication and the various ways to spell these sounds in order to be able to spell words easily. Unless a person has photographic memory, it is impossible to picture all words in a whole word format fashion in order to read and spell them. In order to meet the needs of all students, students need to develop a good sign vocabulary but also a good understanding of phonics, syllabication, as well various comprehension skills.
