Stage 1 General Information Note

Term 1, 2012
Interviews A formal week has been set aside for towards the end of the term. Notes will go home later in the term with more precise information. Homework Homework will start in week 4. The books that will come home for home reading are books that are used on a daily basis for teaching in the classroom. Please assist your child to remember that their green or blue folder must come to school every day. Medications All medications must be organised with the front office. Please do not send students to school with any medication in their bag. If you have important medical information regarding your child, could you please pass on the updated details to the front office staff. If your child has anaphylaxis, asthma or acsia, we require an action plan developed in conjunction with and signed off on by your GP Attendance For the benefit of all children, parents and carers should ensure their child attends school regularly. School starts at 8:55am please try to arrive before this to allow students to settle and do ant morning jobs i.e. lunch orders. Any absence from school needs to be explained within seven days of the absence. Please send a written, dated and signed note to your class teacher. If you are running late in the morning, please fill in a late slip in the front office and give it to the teacher. If you need to collect your child early for some reason, you must also complete a form at the front office and give that note to the class teacher. Labelling Please label every item of clothing that might be removed(hats, jumpers) and other belongings (lunch box, drink bottle). This way any lost property can be returned to your child. Lost Property There are two yellow bins in the lobby outside Mr Beattie classroom that may contain your childs lost item. Fruit Break Please remember that students need a small piece of fruit each morning, already cut up in small pieces. Scripture Students have been placed in the same Scripture group as last year. If you would like to make any changes to the Scripture group that your child attends, please send a note to the office. Head Lice Unfortunately these can be a common occurrence! We recommend that you regularly check your childs hair. As infestations can be quite common in primary schools, it is best to use a treatment that can be used over time. There is no single solution to eradication, only persistence. Excursions This term, Stage 1 will be having an incursion, Grans Bag. GRANS BAG is a show full of puppets, bags large and small, songs and stories. The stories tell us about all sorts of Grans and their grandchildren, and take us to a city in Australia, a lonely witchs house in a deep dark forest, a bus going to the beach, and a house in China. This performance links in with our COGS unit, Our Stories and our Literacy focus on Narratives and Recounts. Easter Events Year 1 will be participating in the Easter Hat Parade and year 2 will be part of the Egg Decorating Competition. This will be held in week 9 on 28th March, 2013. Money and Notes All money and notes for excursions are to be handed in at the front office. This is to ensure accountability when tracking student payments and allows

Library Day Remember your library bag. Literacy Reading : Students participate in Literacy groups where they will read books at their reading level and work on comprehension and other reading skills. Students are also required to read at home in order to reinforce their classroom understandings and promote literacy growth. Spelling : Students will work on individual spelling lists comprising of both personal words and theme words. These theme words will have a common sound (air, ear, are) and the students will be required to investigate and learn as many of these combinations before their spelling test each week. Writing : This term, students will be focusing on both Recounts and Narratives in their writing. These text genres integrate well with our science and HSIE units and will enable students to explore scientific phenomenon whilst also practising and improving their Literacy development. Numeracy This term, students will be participating in Stage 1 Maths groups, Monday to Thursday. This unit encourages students to develop an understanding of heritage as a sense of change through time and place, by sharing stories, oral histories, photos and artefacts related to their own and other families and their community. Drug Education This term, students will be participating in the unit Medicines and Me where they will learn about the purpose of medicines, how they are administered responsibly and people to go to for help. Science This Term, students will be investigating sounds in, Sound Sensations. This unit students will be learning that: Objects are made of materials that have observable properties Light and sound are produced by a range of sources and can be sensed Light from a source forms shadows and can be absorbed, reflected and refracted
