Ndeye Seck Sanchez CPCP- Power Tool: Present vs Future

POWER TOOL: Present vs Future Introduction: What a topic! How many among us are not in the present moment? How many are stressing out because of the future? How many of us are aware of the situation and would work on it through coaching? A minority! What a pity!. Coaching can be a very good means to not only overcome this issue but also help in switching the actual tendency. We all know there is an evident link between the past, the present and the future. However, as you may know in coaching the past stays in the past and does not get involved in the process and therefore we will focus on the present and the future . As a coach, we can help the client to be or to live more and more in the present moment even if staying in the present is not evident. The role here for a coach is to accompany the client on his/her journey from the present to the future .The present will define the future. The present influences the future. The present can change the future. The coach will help in clarifying ideas of the present before the clients plan his/her objectives or future.

Self-Application: Being in the present: It is living your life at the present moment at the fullest. It is also understanding that the present is not the future and the future is not the present. As Horace said Carpe Diem: seize the day. While coaching, we can notice that most people are consciously or unconsciously stuck in the past. The client talks about the past often and we as coaches are listening actively because we need to understand better the clients story and also the current situation. As Fabian Black said: The fact is you cant escape the past by moving on, it just moves with you. As coaches we are always keeping in mind that the past stays in the past therefore we will help client in moving forward and changing his/her perspectives. The past in coaching is a means to help the coach in better knowing the client but also linking it up to the clients present. This can be a good opportunity for the client to understand that past choices are done and others options are possible. Henry David Thoreau describes well how to live the present: "You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, and find your eternity in each moment." Supporting the client to be in the present moment means for a coach to:

know the clients story by active listening understand the client without judgement to create a space of trust which is crucial in a coaching relationship, Discover the clients true self, values, beliefs, strengths, UAC, projects, And things that matter to him/her, Help the client to be aware of the actual situation and where he/she stands presently. This can be done by a mirror effect, Make him/her accept the current situation and therefore he/she should be able to move forward, change or go to any direction in his/ her life. Make the client take responsibility in the present moment knowing he or she has choices ahead. Empower and support the client to set objectives and a vision in life.

When the current situation is clearly understood from both parties the coach and the client get involved in the future in an easy and evident ways. How can we help the client to be in the future? In thinking as John Maxwell says in his book Developing the Leader Within You: Success is the progressive realization of a predetermined goal. Being in the future: It means being in the next present moment and plan for the future moment. It is also not being in the present moment in all you do and have your mind somewhere in the future. The limit is the sky with Coaching. According to Gifford Pinchot: The vast possibilities of our great future will become realities only if we make ourselves responsible for the future.

In the coaching process it involves for the coach to support the client in: - Taking actions plan, - Setting clear objectives with deadlines, - Climbing the steps - Switch or change of attitudes toward events - Changing habits, - Projecting himself/herself into a better future, - Holding the client vision - Expanding limits, developing oneself, looking ahead - Visualizing more happy or joyful moments - Finding more peace, success, serenity or light. The future is also a growing partnership where client and coach become better and better in what they do as they move ahead because there is a better efficient partnership with a better future. The future is for people of actions: The future belongs to people who see possibilities before they become obvious.

According to an anonymous author, you will only become what you are becoming right now. Coaching application: I would like to share with you, the case of a client who took the step to contact me as a coach three (3 )months ago. During our first session he was willing to change something in his life and was committed to get positive results . Case study: My illustration is the example of my client Amagor who is stressed at work about his career. He is so afraid of not moving up in the future and does not e want to think of what he is doing presently at work as an Office Manager Responsible of fifty (50) employees. He was confused about his future. When we started our coaching session, it was important to define his objectives and his level of commitment. Lets see first the different steps of this coaching process then the results. I have started with an exploration of ideas to understand who he was, and what were his motivations? Then we went to a process of discovery how he got the job, if he knew what it involved? If he loved what he was doing? Where did he see himself within 3 years and how he could reach his goal? Thus, we could see what could possibly hold him back from reaching that goal? which structure could presently help him and which actions plan could be done for the future?

After the three months of coaching we have seen a positive difference. - He has developed a greater self-awareness, - He has established a career plan He has set realistic goals - He can clearly define his role - His productivity has increased by 30%.

Reflections: As of now, what will you do to live at the fullest present moments? Do you like your actual job? If no, is there any others options?

Where do you see yourself in two years? How do feel about the future? Describe briefly what impact has on life the fact of being in present moment?

Powerful questions: If you had the power to change three (3) things immediately what it would be? Is your future project real or perceived? What impact does your present have in decision making process? Tell me in your future three (3) things which frightened you the most in your professional life? Where in your professional life do you feel satisfied? Discussion questions: Do you think at any given moment that we can choose to change our future?

Self reflections (as a coach): What are some of the techniques you can use to help the client to live the present moment?

Conclusion To conclude, as coach and coach we have a good example with Oprah Winfrey when she affirms that: Doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment-. Focusing on what is life now so that something greater can be made from it in the future. We have the power to be in the present and change our future the way we want. We have unlimited options with coaching. This is confirmed by Mahatma Gandhi when she said: The future depends on what we do today.

Quotes: "Life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quickly you hardly catch it going." -- Tennessee Williams In this book Thich Nhat Hanh, the renowned Zen monk, author, and meditation master, distills the essence of Buddhist thought and practice, emphasizing the power of mindfulness to transform our lives. escape, he explains. It means being here, present, and totally alive. It is true freedomand without this freedom, there is no happiness. We must dare to think 'unthinkable' thoughts. We must learn to explore all the options and possibilities that confront us in a complex and rapidly changing world. We must learn to welcome and not to fear the voices of dissent. We must dare to think about 'unthinkable' things because when things become unthinkable, thinking stops and action becomes mindless. James W.
