An Unsettling Account: Rape in India

With over 22,000 rape incidents occurring in 2010 alone, India is a country which has become widely known for its high rate of rape in recent years. Although, statisticians suspect the number is much higher than this, as the majority of rape incidents go unreported. Navi Pillay, the human rights chief of the United Nations, described rape in India as a national problem in 2011. Recently, however, Indias rape problem has spent much time in the international spotlight. On December 16, 2012, an Indian female and her suspected boyfriend boarded a bus. They were headed home after seeing a movie and getting dinner together. The only other people on the bus were a group of 5 males and the driver. The group of males attacked the females boyfriend, beating him with a steel rod. They then raped the woman and beat her severely. Using the same rod they had used to beat up her boyfriend, the males penetrated the woman and destroyed her intestines. Doctors would later find only 5% of her intestines left intact. She died thirteen days later.

WHOS THE MOST POPULAR US POLITICIAN, YOU ASK?

Thats right, its Hillary Clinton. According to a survey released recently by Quinnipiac University, 62% of the American voting population approves of Mrs. Clinton, while only 34% disapproves. The former Secretary of State surpassed both top ranking Democrat and Republican politicians to land the coveted spot of most popular. The poll results were released just one week after she left her post as Barack Obamas Secretary of State. Clinton claims that she does not expect to re-enter the world of politics, but her supporters hope this not to be the case. Democrat and Republican strategists alike expect Hillary to make her political re-entrance just in time for the election of 2016.

THE UNITED STATES AND RUSSIA: A GAME OF PASSIVE-AGGRESSION

Its no secret that the United States and Russia have had anything but a smooth relationship over the past 200 years. Trying desperately to reach a state of steadfast peace, both counties have often struggled to put on the facade that everything is A-okay. This pseudo-friendship is a result of both countries recognizing the power of the other. Those with big stones shouldnt throw stones at those with equally big stones, so to speak. Tension between the United States and Russia increased particularly in the postWWII era. Although the US had worked with the Soviet Union to take-down the Axis powers, Franklin Roosevelt was always weary about working with Joseph Stalin, a power hungry Communist; however, the enemy of my enemy is my friend idiom prevailed, and World War II was brought to close. As the Soviet Union and the USA no longer needed one another, they both began to make their distaste for each other known. Russia was angered that the United States waited so long to enter WWII, leaving them to fend the Write captions for the selected photos. Axis powers off by themselves. Conversely, the United States was worried about the power of the Soviet Union as they began to expand their control to much of Eastern Europe. This, of course, is what led to the infamous Cold War. Despite previous disagreements, the United States and Russia have managed to get along fairly well in more recent years. With the elections of President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, the United States and Russia pressed a figurative and literal reset button to signify their dedication to starting fresh. All good things must come to an end, unfortunately, which is exactly what happened when Vladimir Putin was re-elected to the Presidency of Russia in March of 2012. Putin has never been particularly fond of the USA, and most likely never will be. The most recent example of this dislike for the United States came in the form of an adoption ban which banned Americans from adopting Russians children. Many families who were already in the process of adoption, some of which had taken multiple trips to Russia to visit their future children, were forced to end the adoption process before it was finalized. High ranking Russian officials stated that American officials had refused Russian access to a Russian-born boy who had been placed in a new home after his original foster parents were found guilty of child abuse. This ban comes as a painful blow to Russia-United States relations, as the State Department had worked out an agreement for continued adoptions mere months ago.

MUCH OF HISTORY HAS FEATURED RUSSIA AND THE UNITED STATES AS THE LEADING POWERS Indeed, Russia and the U.S. were allies during the two tragic conflicts of the Second and the First World Wars, which allows us to think there's something objectively bringing us together in difficult times, and I think - I believe - it has to do with geopolitical interests and also has a moral component. .
