Government
of Canada
Launches
International
Travel
Website
Our government is pleased to announce
Travel.gc.ca, a newly revamped tool to help
Canadians travel smarter and safer, said
Minister Ablonczy. For the first time ever, we
have brought together in one place informa-
tion from all government departments to help
Canadians be informed before, during and
after their travels.
Travel.gc.ca is a single website where Ca-
nadians will find, easily and efficiently, the
information they need to travel or live abroad
safely and to make informed decisions. In
addition to the website, a new mobile ap-
plication, Travel Smart, is now available; it
allows Canadians anywhere in the world to
access Government of Canada information
and services on international travel.
Canadians will also be able to access key
travel information from anywhere in the world
through Twitter, Facebook, RSS feeds and
email updates. Travel.gc.ca is supported by
a social media presence distributing the latest
travel advice, crisis updates and emergency
contact information. Social media channels
will also provide a venue for Canadians to let
the Government of Canada know about their
travel-related needs and priorities.
Canadians access Travel.gc.ca and govern-
ment services from their mobile devices in
surprising numbers, added Minister Ablon-
czy. The Travel Smart app and social media
channels are a natural fit in our age of smart
phones.
Travel.gc.ca is managed by Foreign Affairs
and International Trade Canada in collabora-
tion with the Canadian Air Transport Security
Authority, the Canada Border Services Agen-
cy, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, the
Canada Revenue Agency, Citizenship and
Immigration Canada, Environment Canada,
Health Canada, Passport Canada, the Pub-
lic Health Agency of Canada, Public Safety
Canada and Transport Canada.

60% of Respondents Say Difficult to
Find Canadians with Sufficient Asia
Knowledge, Finds APF Canada Poll
A
new Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada opinion poll
found 60% of respondents who employ Canadians
for Asia-related work say it is difficult to find qualified
Canadians with the appropriate level of knowledge and
awareness of Asia to help the company or organization
succeed in Asia. In the Points of View Asia Pacific opin-
ion poll Asia-engaged Canadians considered different
dimensions of Canada-Asia relations with respect to
education. More than 8-in-10 respondents consider
education to be the most critical component of any
strategy to build closer relations with Asian countries.
The Points of View Asia Pacific, sponsored by Ca-
thay Pacific Airways, is an opinion panel of the Asia
Pacific Foundation of Canada and comprised 1,188
individuals engaged in Asia through professional and
research interests. The full survey results on education
in Canada-Asia relations can be viewed here.

Harper Government Highlights Economic
Impact of International Students in Canada
T
he Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the
Asia-Pacific Gateway, recently released a report showing that international
students contributed more than $8 billion to the Canadian economy in 2010,
up from $6.5 billion in 2008.
The Harper government is committed to continuing to attract the best
and brightest students to Canada, said Minister Fast. This study reaffirms
our governments commitment to international education. That is one of the
reasons we are committed to refreshing our governments Global Commerce
Strategy and to developing a comprehensive plan to entrench educational
links between Canada and international institutions for Canadas long-term
prosperity.
The report found there were 218,000 full-time international students in
Canada in 2010, up from 178,000 in 2008 and more than double the number
of students in 1999. It estimated that international students supported 86,000
jobs and contributed $445 million in tax revenue.
I am delighted that Canada is a destination that is growing in attraction
for international students, said Minister Fast while visiting the University of
British Columbia. The presence of international students and researchers
taking advantage of Canadas world-class facilities creates jobs and economic
growth and contributes to our people-to-people ties with other countries and,
in particular, emerging markets.
Outstanding international students and researchers not only enrich our
campuses but make Canada more competitive by sharing knowledge and
expertise both during their time at university and afterwards, said Prof. Stephen
Toope, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of British Columbia.
A commitment to refresh Canadas Global Commerce Strategy was
announced in Economic Action Plan 2012. A more powerful international
education strategy will help strengthen Canadas engagement with emerging
economies and ensure greater collaboration between Canada and institutions
while boosting this countrys economic prosperity.

Students to Canada.

an instant classic with the Farangs
defeating the Abu Dhabi Storm 2-1 in a very
close final game to win the international open
division. Bangkok captain Geoff McIntyre
provided most of the final-game dramatics,
assisting on Rob Taylors tying goal, after Abu
Dhabi jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, and
then scoring the winning goal himself. Mc-
Intyre didnt make it easy for his team though
taking a minor penalty with just over two min-
utes to go; the pro-Bangkok crowd was on
pins and needles as the clocked ticked down
to the Flying Farangs first home champion-
ship. Netminder Dean Tzembelikos, who flew
in from Hong Kong for the tourney, provided
crucial saves for the Farangs at key times to
earn the win. And veteran Robert Voisine, also
played an important tormenting opposing
netminders so Farang forwards could better
put in the blasts coming from their stellar
defensemen on the points.
Thai National star Tewin Thor Chart-
suwan skated on the Farangs top line with
Swiss speedster Jurg Dolder and Swedish
ace Henrik Olofsson. Likit Neimwan-Anders-
son, the only Thai to ever play professional ice
hockey, teamed up with Oduya on defense.
Likit had played with Oduyas brother Freddy
(now deceased) years earlier in Sweden, and
was one of the few players on the team who
could handle Oduyas rocket-hard passes.
The Pitstop team from Latvia defeated the
Singapore Manimals to win the International

their final as well, losing in a semi-final shoot-

career. Toskala holds the San Jose record for
most points by a goalie in a game (2), he was
also traded to Anaheim with Jason Blake for
former Conn Smythe trophy winner (MVP in
the playoffs), Jean-Sebastien Giguere.
Oduya was traded to the Atlanta Thrash-
ers (who became the Winnipeg Jets) from the
New Jersey Devils on 4 February 2010 along
with Niclas Bergfors, Patrice Cormier and a
1st round draft pick for Anssi Salmela and Ilya
Kovalchuk. On 10 March 2010; Kovalchuk
went on to sign the most expensive contract
in NHL history - US$102 million spread over
17 years. Oduya was later dealt to Chicago
on February 27 of this year for a 2nd and
3rd round pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.
He is scheduled to make US$4 million this
year (if the NHL resumes play), and he plays
on defense with former James Norris trophy
winner (best defenseman in the NHL) Duncan
Keith and his co-Olympic gold-medal winning
teammate Brent Seabrooke.
The Land of Smiles tourney took place
over five days at The Rink, Grand Central
Rama IX Mall and the Imperial Samrong
Ice Arena. The Zamboni at Samrong broke
down early in the tournament and panic set
in quickly, because when the machine broke
it left a large and deep rut in the ice, so
dangerous that the Canadian Hackers team
threaten to leave for safety concerns. Quick
thinking by Flying Farang Mike Swager saved
the day, as after packing the whole with some
loose ice, he grabbed a fire extinguisher and
hosed the rut shut earning the nickname The
Extinguisher.
I
t should come as no surprise that Gary
Pinter is the front man for the Pattaya
Pickle Company. You see Gary grew up
on a farm near the Austro-Hungarian border
where his family pickled and preserved a lot of
what they grew. And when Gary immigrated
to Canada at age 12 to join his mom, who
he calls the worlds greatest pickler, the
family lived in Torontos Bathurst-Finch area,
close to many Jewish delis with their kosher
pickles, so Gary has been surrounded by
pickles and preserves his whole life.
First, a little bit of background on the
Pattaya Pickle Company; its a subsidiary
of GeckoTech Thailand. The owners, Mark
Robbins and Chris Oxley, are electrical
engineers specializing in process controls.
They did a lot of work for Procter and Gamble
and other international companies, setting
up automated control systems and software
for the manufacturing of dish soap, fabric
softener and diapers all over Asia.
Six years ago, the two bought the rights
and recipes for a company called Rancho
Texas Pickles and Sauces, which had been
on the market for 15 years and was sold in
grocery shops and delis. GekoTech recently
built a brand-new FDA manufacturing facility
in Pattaya and two years later launched the
Pattaya Pickle Company, an approved
manufacturer of specialty pickle products
and sauces.
The company had a good product,
but wasnt doing a great job promoting it
enter Gary. He was hired to promote and
increase the companys brand awareness.
His company, Top Hat Business Center
(THBC), specializes in corporate business
development and has built a strong customer
relationship with Thailands fine food diners
and top groceries.
For nearly 30 years, Gary worked as
business advertising consultant for radio and
TV stations in Toronto and Montreal. He has
also worked with various newspapers and
magazine in New York and Los Angeles. He
has very quickly made the Pattaya Pickle
Company a very visible presence.
Defining what makes his company tick,
Gary says, At Top Hat Business Center
Client service not only drives us, it defines
us. At THBC, we address clients interests
and objectives through communication and
consulting that combines a global perspective
with local expertise to understand the issues,
events, and trends that impact businesses
and organizations around the world.

for you, they contain 0% fat and cucumbers

The companys goal is simple; produce a
product of the highest quality at an affordable
price. There are many great recipes on the
companys website, so you can enjoy the
companys products in a variety of ways.
The company has been front and center
at many Chamber events lately, offering
samples of their delicious products and
they have a playful mascot, Capn Dill, who
accompanies them everywhere.
Pattaya pickles can be a yummy garnish
on just about anything from club sandwiches
to Mexican nachos, taco salads and bacon
hamburgers. Or just munch on them alone,
fresh, delicious and crunchy each and

n October, The TCCC staged its monthly
networking night at Bourbon Street, whose
new location finds its a short walk from
the Ekamai BTS station. As per usual, the
TCCCs monthly board meeting was held
before the Canuck Connections gathering
and which TCCC board members mingled
with other TCCC members with a big topic
of conversation being the upcoming Beaver
golf tournament.
For those who dont know, Bourbon
Street is a popular street in the very popular
French quarter of New Orleans, the spot
where Doug Harrison the owner of Bangkoks
Bourbon Street Restaurant & Oyster Bar was
born and raised. He left New Orleans in 1982
for a work in Singapore, Malaysia and Indone-
sia with an oil-field construction engineering
firm where he worked as an offshore marine
pipeline welder. Then he headed to the North
Sea and southern Spain the following year,
followed by three years based out of Dubai.
Doug had started coming to Bangkok on
holiday while based in Indonesia in 1982,
and kept coming back. After leaving Dubai,
he decided to hang out in Bangkok for a
couple months, when in September of 1986,
he bought a bar at the back of Washington
Square, off of Sukhumvit Soi 22, as he says,
to cut down on my expenses and keep me
out of other peoples bars. Bourbon Street
made sense as a name for the bar and he
quickly expanded it into a restaurant, got a
long-term lease and turned it into a hotel
as well.
Over the years, Bourbon Street has had
a few other outlets; Doug bought, built, oper-
ated, rented out and then sold properties on
Sukhumvit Soi 49, and Soi Tonson. He still
has a food court at Bumrungrad Hospital
(10th floor of the outpatient building). But
after 25 years, the owners of the Washington
Square property wouldnt renew Bourbon
Streets lease, so Doug went looking for a
new property and his wife found the new
premises on Soi Ekamai, while dropping off
the couples three boys at school one day.
He renovated the 27-year-old building,
knocking down all the walls and reinforc-
ing the building with steel I-beams, turning
it into a 160-seat restaurant spread over 3
floors, with an 18-room boutique hotel with
prices range from Bt1,200-1,500, including
breakfast. Even though Doug sold almost ev-
erything he had, including a few rental proper-
ties and a boutique hotel he was building, to
secure the new premises he describes the
move as better than a blessing in disguise, it
was the best thing that ever happened to us.
The new Bourbon Street opened its doors
on 16 Jan 2012, while the old one officially
had its last call on 18 Jan 2012. All of Dougs
staff, everyone, made the move with him.
Doug has done a lot of philanthropic work
over the years, but the two organizations he
has primarily focused on are Operation Smile
and Father Joe Maiers Human Development
Centre, organizing an annual golf tournament
for the latter called the Father Joe Maier Hu-
man Development Foundation Charity Golf
Classic (always held the second Friday in
March, this year its March 9th) at the Royal
Golf & Country Club in Lat Krabang. For the
former, a charity that does great work fixing
cleft palates, Doug helped sponsor Operation
Smiles 2nd Fight Night at the Dusit Thani
recently.
The spot where the TCCC held its board
meeting/ networking night was the 7th floor
indoor/outdoor rooftop party room; this mul-
tipurpose room, with full bar service, is ideal
for breakfast meetings, luncheons, private
parties - theres even a 110-inch TV screen,
which you can plug into and do power-point
presentations.
With the new location, Bourbon Street
has gone from back street to Main Street,
but Doug refuses to go with white tablecloths.
He wants a casually elegant establishment.
Bourbon Street is reasonably priced because
as Doug says, I like volume not once-a-year
anniversary guests. The specialty of the
house is its famous Louisiana Cajun/Cre-
ole dishes such as Boiled Live Crawfish,
Blackened Redfish, Jambalaya, Gumbo,
Blackened Crab Cakes and many more New
Orleans favourites. Theres also fresh oysters
from three different countries.
Other menu favourites include Bar-B-Q
Baby Back Ribs and Chicken, Char Grilled
Steaks and great entrees such as Chicken
Fried Steak, Beef Brisket and Fried Chicken.
Every Tuesday night is Mexican Night fea-
turing an All You Can Eat buffet including
such items as Beef & Chicken Tacos, Beef &
Chicken Enchiladas, Fajitas, Burritos, Refried
Beans, Mexican Fried Rice and Chilli. Pizza
and Thai food are also available.
Bourbon Street has received many ac-
colades over the years, including a plug
from Newsweek as one of the best bars in
the world. Its also had its share of famous
guests including Led Zeppelins Jimmy Page
and dignitaries from many countries.
For Doug, what makes his job so interest-
ing is that he gets to meet people of different
occupations and all walks of life from all over
the world every day and he has a passion for
serving good people, satisfying his customers
and having them return.
