Christa Curfiss
Christa Curfiss will be writing a column mainly about our history. We are calling the column, Did You Know? Christa returned to the City of Cincinnati just over one year ago after living on the West Coast of the United States for approximately eight years. She returned to her hometown to work for social justice causes and
to further her historic research. Ms. Curfiss focus as a historian has been on peoples revolutionary movements, and most specifically queer history, both locally and globally. Christa is currently working to digitize analog primary source documents that pertain to LGBT history in order to increase the materials accessibility to the public.

Obamas ations proved a ripe season for hard ball . Crafty DC insider Vice President Biden carried this off. Forget that he is 70. During the inauguration he reeked of adrenalin and testosterone. Obama has a singular trump card a powerful possible successor at the center of his administration. The nominees for Secretaries of State and Defense (Kerry and Hagel) are two of Bidens old Senate cronies. Obamas first official act after the Big Event was to put their names into nomination. In a lot of nations the person who holds the parliamentary majority and picks the cabinet is the Prime Minister. The president or monarch provides the gravitas and is the servant of the popular will. This may be evolving here. It may be easy for the GOP to dismiss four more years of Obama , They cannot. Twelve more years of Joe Biden stare right back at them. There is USA historical precedent here. Twenty four years of Jefferson , Madison and Monroe evolved into the Era of Good Feeling. It was a consensus bred by the implosion of the Federalist Party and emergence of the Democratic Party. Strong successors serving as of Secretary of State provided the continuity of power. This brings up a worse GOP nightmare. Hillary still waits in the wings. February is National Marriage Month

It is our goal to record the positive contributions GLBT people make to their community and the local community at large. While AIDS and Hate CRIMES are certainly not positive things, we seek to draw the positive from the negative. We hold up Paul Delph and Matthew Shepard and their families as models of how human beings should or could react to each other and how families should support loved ones whose lives are not in the box right wing religious zealots want them in. Delph, a multi-talented Cincinnatian, died of AIDS in 1996. His mother shut down her business to care for him. Shepard died in 1998, victim of a hate Crime and his mother worked for years to get passed a national Hate Crimes Bill, which is now law.

Gay marriage bill sails through Senate committee, 9-5
By Kate Sosin, Windy City Times Illinois' Gay Marriage Bill is headed for a full Senate vote after the measure passed easily out of the Senate Executive Committee February 5. The Committee voted 9-5 to send to the bill for a full vote. Senate Sponsor Heather Steans argued that civil unions, passed two years, created a second class status for LGBT couples. Same-sex couples want to marry for the reasons we all do, Steans said. It's an institution that's fundamental to our culture. Pastor Suzanne AndersonHurdle, who testified in favor of the bill, echoed that sentiment. There cannot be free-

the words as labels of indubitable adjudication. Such designations were wielded as absolute and unquestionable when declared by psychiatrists. The terms would manifest as a means of dividing people into normative and deviant. The prevailing use of the label heterosexual would become a way to indicate that a person was not sexually depraved under Victorian principles and morally superior to those labeled as homosexuals.
For further information regarding the etymology of the word heterosexual please see Jonathan Ned Katzs book The Invention of Heterosexuality (New York : Dutton, 1995). -
