FR ADRIANS CORNER

Lent is upon us and this Wednesday is Ash Wednesday and
the beginning of the Holy Season. Please note the umes and
locauons of liturgies for Ash Wednesday youll nd these in
the Parish Bulleun.
We have a Parish Retreat this year beginning on March 3 at all
Masses and then during the week for our English-speaking and
Hispanic Communiues three evenings for both. Each evening
will begin at 7:00 with Mass and nish at 8:00. Parishioners
are busy and we thought that one hour of reecuon for Lent
would be not asking too much. I hope you agree. Our Parish
Retreat takes place in the Parish Chapel. Please see the Parish
Bulleun over the coming weeks for details.
Conducung the Parish Retreat is a Franciscan Bishop from
Honduras who also happens to be from Ireland. He is Bishop
Michael Lenihan, OFM and he is Bishop of La Ceiba, Honduras.
Fr. Michael has been a missionary in Central America for 30
years and was made a bishop last year. He and I were students
in Rome many years ago and I am delighted that he said yes to
the invitauon to travel from Honduras to be with us at San Luis
Rey. Michael is a countryman, a farmers son who grew up in a
simple Irish family. Today, his younger brother runs the farm
in Limerick, Ireland, and I know that Bishop Michael likes to
work with his brother on the farm during his vacauons. I be-
lieve that you will like him very much and that he will have
some good reecuons to share with us in Lent.
I want to take this opportunity to thank all the people in-
volved in the Music Ministry at the Parish. We have a tremen-
dous number of truly wonderful men, women and children
volunteering to sing and play music instruments at our liturgies
every Sunday. I want to thank our outstanding Samoan Choir,
Trinity Choir, Shepherds Choir, Sunday Ensemble, Childrens
and Youth Choirs. On your behalf I want to thank Lupe Rios,
Tavale Tavale, David Coe, Laura Gibson and those who work
alongside them for all the hard work and dedicauon to this
vital ministry. I know from my meeungs with them that it is
their earnest hope to keep improving the quality of the music
and singing at the parish and parucularly as we approach Holy
Week and Easter.
Some people have asked me for the piece I read at Mass a
few Sundays ago during my homily. I call it a Post-Christmas
Reecuon Here it is:
When the song of the angels is snlled
When the star in the sky is gone
When the kings and princes are home
When the shepherds are back with the ock
The work of Christmas begins
To nd the lost
To heal the broken
To feed the hungry
To release the prisoners
To rebuild the nanons
To bring peace among brothers and sisters
To make music in the heart.
I would like to thank God for the blessed lives of Joe Castore-
na and Emma Chavez, parishioners who recently passed away.
Emma struggled bravely with Lou Gehrigs disease she was a
beauuful woman who will be greatly missed. Joe was a long
ume parishioner and a good man who went home peacefully
to God.

This is a Year of Faith iniuauve at San Luis Rey
Parish beginning in Advent 2012 and conunuing
through 2013.

As therefore you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so live in him,
rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as
you were taught, lled with thanksgiving. Colossians 2.

The Parish Library is having a used and reured

We are reminded in their passing that life is short; therefore,
may we spend it doing good and making the world a beuer
place for our being in it. May we bring happiness and not
pain, joy and not sorrow, laughter and not tears wherever we
go. May the Spirit of God be upon us as it was upon Jesus in
order that we too may: Find the lost, heal the broken, feed the
hungry, release the prisoners, rebuild the nauons, bring peace
to brothers and sisters; making music in the heart to honor the
Lord.
Happy Lent! Fr. Adrian

SOCIAL CONCERNS EASTER
FOOD BASKET PROGRAM

Its ume once again to think of Easter, the celebrauon which
is the basis for our beauuful faith! By sharing our love with
those who are less fortunate we can help others in a tangible
way while demonstraung our very real belief in the Resurrect-
ed Christ. We oen plan our holiday dinners without stopping
to realize what a true blessing it is especially in these dicult
economic umes - that we are able to provide for our families.
Sadly, too many hard working people in our community are
not able to do so. Oen we take our good fortune as a given
rather than consciously remembering that it is truly a gi from
God. God gives to us so generously and in return He only asks
that we love our neighbors as we love ourselves. Sharing what
we have is the most sincere proof of our love of God shown
through our love of others.
With your help we will give out holiday food baskets again
this Easter. Thanks to our food providers we can put together
a food box with a good holiday feast with all the trimmings
plus a liule extra for just $40.00 per family!
When you put your donauon in the collecuon, please be sure
it is clearly marked for an Easter Basket. We will gladly ac-
cept donauons of turkeys, hams and canned goods which we
ask that you bring directly to the Social Concerns Department
in the Loreuo House during our normal business hours Tues-
Sat. 8:00am-4:00pm). We appreciate you checking the expira-
uon dates on all donated cans and packages of food.
If you have any quesuons, I can be reached at 760-547-0708.
Thank you for all you do to help us feed the poor during the
holidays and throughout the year. God bless you all.

Lent is a ume for us to voluntarily choose to do pen-

SCHOOL NOTES....

NEW OMMS LIBRARY opens for READING
Catholic Schools Week came to a close with a dedicauon to
a wonderful woman, a woman who has served the students at
OMMS for many years!
Mrs. Elizabeth Bush, amidst her growing number of admir-

Freeute\ 1. Aer the ribbon was cut Mrs. Bush and Father
Arturo entered the Library to bless the newest addiuon of
space for students at OMMS, a space that will be enjoyed and
treasured by all ages! This blessing extends to those that step
over the threshold to enter M. B B N, a place
where we will conunue to share her love of literature and joy
in reading. Mrs. Bush and her daughter, Mrs. Trish Spencer
were delighted with the Library and the obvious love that em-
anated from all who joined in the celebrauon and all who took
great care in creaung this new space. Many hands and hearts
were engaged in the preparauon of OMMSs St. Elizabeths
Library; a special thank you to the Visco Family, the Osorio
Family, the Marlow Family, the Acosta Family, OMMS faculty

Pugeda enjoyed sharing their voices with our community dur-

Traigamos felicidad y no

A menudo, nosotros pla-
Gra-
ao.
