INTRODUCTION

Joseph Weed and Deborah Moses of Simsbury, CT are descendants of two Puritan immigrants that came to New England during the Great Migration of the 1630's. Joseph was the great-grandson of Jonas Weed who came to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in the late spring of 1630 with the Gov. John Winthrop fleet. Jonas settled in Watertown, MA and moved with others in 1636 and 1637 south along the Connecticut River and settled the town of Wethersfield, CT, the oldest established settlement in the Colony of Connecticut. In 1641 he was an early settler in Stamford, CT and he died there in 1676. Descendants of the line of Jonas Weed to Joseph Weed were in Stamford, Derby, Waterbury and finally Simsbury, where the subject Joseph settled by 1757. Deborah Moses was the second great-granddaughter of John Moses of Plymouth, MA who came to New England between 1630 and 1640. Her great-grandfather, also named John, was in Windsor, CT in 1647. Her grandfather, another John Moses, was also born in Windsor and was the first of the Moses family to came to Simsbury, CT about 1681. The author is a fifth great-grandson of Joseph Weed and Deborah Moses through his mother, Mary Frances Maloney, his grandfather, Frederick George Maloney, and his great-grandmother, Sarah Weed.

SIMSBURY AND GRANBY, CONNECTICUT

In the seventeenth century, Simsbury - or Massacoe, as it was originally known - comprised all of that area that today includes the Hartford County towns of Simsbury, Granby, East Granby, West Granby, Canton and North Canton. Although never included within the town limits of Windsor, it was generally considered a parish of that town and the early settlers of Simsbury were from Windsor. In 1642, an act of the General Court specified that, "It is ordered, that the Governor and Mr. Haynes shall have liberty to dispose of the ground upon that part of Tunxus river, called Massacoe, to such inhabitants of Windsor, as they shall see cause." The first Indian deed for any of this area was given in 1648 by three Indians, Pacatoco, Pamatacount and Youngcoout, to John Griffin with the two witnesses to this deed given on the 28th day of June, 1648 were Windsor residents, George Abbet and John Moses, the greatgrandfather of Deborah Moses. Grants of land were made by the General Court to numerous persons but a permanent settlement was not established until about 1664, and it was not until 1666 that a committee, appointed by the General Court, specified the terms upon which Windsor residents may take up land in Massacoe. The first grants of land were made by that committee the following year and it is believed that all of the first settlers were there by 1669. One of those grants in "Weatogue, east" was to John Moses, Sr., Deborah's great-grandfather. Until 1668 Massacoe was still associated with the town of Windsor but that year the General Court "doth desire that Massacoe, which hitherto hath been an appendix to the town of Windsor, may be improved for the making of a plantation." Further, the Court went on to order the previosly appointed committee to "make such just orders as they shall judge requisite for the well ordering of the said plantation, so they be not be repugnant to the public order of this Colony." As a result of this order, Massacoe had some measure of local control as a plantation and in 1670 the General Court incorporated it as a separate town and the name changed to Simsbury. The Court set Simsbury's boundaries as running "from Farmington bounds to the northward tenn miles, and from Windsor bounds, on the east, to run westward tenn miles." In 1679, grants of land were made to thirteen families in the Salmon Brook area that was later to become Granby and in 1688 additional lots were granted in the area of Turkey Hills. However, despite the granting of land the population of this section of Simsbury remained quite small. In 1709 there were but eleven families, nine on the west side of the Salmon Creek and only two on the east. In 1728 the number of families on the west side had Increased to twenty-seven, on the east it had increased to eleven and there were now twenty-four families on the east side of the

mountain. Even though these families had settled a quite distance from the meeting house in Simsbury they still travelled for Sabath and midweek meetings to Simsbury. As a result, two Ecclesiastical Societies were established in 1736 at Salmon Brook and Turkey Hills, and the first meeting of the Salmon Brook Society was held in May of 1739. The following year a Congregational Meeting House was constructed to serve the families of Salmon Brook and Turkey Hills. Finally, on October 12, 1786 the Salmon Brook and Turkey Hills Ecclesiastic Societies were incorporated as the Town of Granby. In Granby, Joseph Weed and his family lived in the western portion of Granby near the West Branch of the Salmon Brook and an elevation called Tree Hill. Tree Hill is today, I believe, the Weed Hill shown on current maps of Hartford County, Connecticut. As a result of subdividing and creating new towns, the family of Joseph and Deborah Weed lived in three towns Simsbury, Granby and West Granby - without ever having to move!

Joseph Weed and Deborah Moses

1. Joseph WEED, the son of John Weed and Mary Jackson Beaman, was born on 2 Nov 1708, in Derby, New Haven, CT 1. Joseph was the great-grandson of Jonas Weed, the first of the Weed family in New England who came from England with the Winthrop Fleet in the Spring of 1630. Joseph's father and his family had come from Derby to the Oxford Parish of Waterbury, CT and it was in Waterbury that he married on 5 Jun 1740, Deborah MOSES. At the time of their marriage in Waterbury, Joseph was noted as being "of Derby" 2. Joseph's wife, Deborah, was born on 3 Nov 1718, in Simsbury, Hartford, CT, the daughter of John MOSES and Hannah HOSKINS ("Debrath Moses third daughter of John Moses of Simsbury was born the third day of November 1718.") 3. She was the great-great-granddaughter of John Moses of Plymouth, MA who came to New England between 1630 and 1640. On 29 August 1749, Joseph paid Timothy Moses (probably his brother-in-law, and his wife's step-brother) 300 for a 113 acre parcel of land located in "1/2 mi. tier lying on Mt. south of Joseph Cases house." The land was bounded on the south on a division lot laid out to the heirs of John Slater; west on the division land; north to a parcel owned by Josiah and Joel Case; and east on land of Josiah and Joel Case, fromerly granted to John Humphrey, long deceased. 4 On 25 June 1763, he deeded a portion of that parcel near the east side of West Mt. to Josiah Case. This parcel was described as, "begin at the West End of tier lots wh. I now live upon at ye N.W. corner of my sd. Lots and bounds on my own land, West on the next tier, North on Joel Cases land, S. on undivided land being 8 rods 3/4 in breadth the same in length and number of A[cres] m or l [more or less]." 5 Finally, on 8 January 1768, Joseph deeded to Elijah Tuller the "land bought of Timothy Moses with house barn and orchards, etc." 6 Joseph died 30 Nov 1771, in Simsbury ("Jofeph Weed Departed this Life November 30th 1771.").7 Following his death, his estate was inventoried by Abel Gofard and Simeon Holcomb on 13 January 1772. The inventory is found in the appendix. On the 15th of October, 1772, Dorcas and Hannah, the two daughters of Joseph and Deborah, executes the following, "I Dorcas Weed and Hannah Weed have recd of our Brothers Aaron Weed & Moses Weed of Simsbury the sum of Thirty Pounds lawful money which is in full of our Dues and Demands we have or ever had or ought to have to all or any of our honoured Father Joseph Weed's late of Simsbury Dec'd Estate that is especially two Notes the said Aaron

Dorcas signed the document, Hannah made her mark and it was witnessed by Francis Barnard and Peter Rice.8 The distribution of Joseph's estate was distributed on 19 October 1772 and the distribution was exhibited on 3 November of the same year. 9 Seven years after Joseph's death a series of documents were executed by his children that would "give and devise" to their mother all of their father's estate. The first in May of 1778 was as follows: "Know all men by these pre that whas - we the Subsc. of Sims in Co. Hart. heirs at law of the Estate of Joseph Weed late of sd Simsbury Decd find by cert. memo, under the hands of said Dec'd signifying that it was his last will and purpose to give and devise to his and our honoured Mother Deborah Weed of sd Simsbury all ye estate both real & personal that belonged to sd Joseph Weed at the time of his death and we being willing to comply with ye will of ye sd Decd do realise qtclaim, resign and relinquish to our sd Honoured Mother all Right Title Claim & Interest we or other of us had have or may have hereafter to any of ye sd estate in manner aforesaid for us and our Heirs and assigns forever. In Witness Thereof we have set our hds and Seals."10 The document was signed by Aaron Weed, Moses Weed, Dorcas [Weed] Matson, Otheniel Gillet, Jr., and Hannah [Weed] Gillet made her mark. To one side of this is the following note, "Benjamin Weed Signed on the 6th day of Sept. 1795." This note may account for the following in the Granby town records that reads: "Granby October 27 1795 Recvid of Diborah Weed & aron Weed & Moses Weed & Benjamin Weed & Dorcas Matson one Pound Lawfull money in full of all Demands of Law or Equity Whatsoever in witness our hands Zebah Matson: } Othenial Gillett Jur Hannah (her mark) Gillett"11

Zebah Matson was the grandson of Joseph and Deborah, and is the son of Dorcas (Weed) Matson. The following month, 15 June 1778, Deborah deeds land to her sons Moses and Benjamin. "For love and good will of my son Moses & Benj. Weed of their Mother Deborah widow and relict Joseph Weed give to my two sons M[oses] & B[enjamin] I pc land - Tree Hill." This parcel was bounded on the North by Thomas Holcomb's land, on the South by Benjamin's land, on the East by her daughter Hannah's land, and on the West by the common or undivided land and lying West of the so-called "long lots." This was a 20 acre parcel that he deceased son Joseph had purchased of his brother Aaron. Of the 20 acres, Moses was given 5 acres and Benjamin was given 15 acres.12 Deborah and her children, Aaron, Moses, Benjamin and Dorcas Matson, are listed in order in the 1790 census for Granby and she died on 15 Dec 1809, in Simsbury. 13 Children of Joseph Weed and Deborah Moses:

2. Aaron WEED was born 28 May 1742, in Waterbury, New Haven, CT, 19 and married Sarah SPENCER20. Aaron is first mentioned in the Simsbury records when he sells land in 1768 to Reuben Holcomb.21 The following year, on 13 April 1769, he received three parcels of land from Timothy and William Thrall of Windsor. (I believe that these two were second cousins, once removed, of Aaron. They are the sons of Timothy Thrall, and the grandsons of Timothy Thrall and Sarrah Allyn, all of Windsor.) The first parcel of land was "at a place called plain Squadron" and was bounded on the East by the "Highway that leads from Old Simsb. to Salmon Brook. In length 3 mi and 3 quarter and laid out to Ephraim Adams" and contained 72 acres. The second parcel, 95 acres, was bounded East by the highway and laid out to Thomas Adams. The third parcel was 100 acres that lead out to Nathaniel Higley. 22 Then on 1 February 1771 Aaron and his brother Moses divide a parcel of land that they had owned jointly. 23 In October of 1772 there were a series of land transactions that probably dealt with land that had been owned originally by his father. On 12 October, Aaron deeded to his sister Dorcas a 21 acre

parcel of land in Salmon Brook on Tree Hill. This land was bounded on the West by their brother Joseph, on the South by land already owned by Dorcas, and on the North by Thomas Holcomb's land.24 The following week, on 19 October 1772, he registered four land transactions involving his brothers and sisters. For 30 he deeded to his brothers, Joseph and Benjamin, and his sisters, Dorcas and Hannah, a piece of land in Salmon Brook, "it being part of 1 of L[arge] Lot E[ast] of part of sd lot and bounds E. on the Highway that runs from Salmon Br. to Hopmeadow. W. on Land I have sold to Dorcas on Tree Hill so called and it is the E. part of a lot I bought of Thrall containing 80 1/2 A[cres] - 13 rods wide." 25 Also on that same date, he deeded land to his sister, Dorcas, "Land on Tree Hill North of my bro. Moses Dwelling House, B[ounded] N[orth on] Land I have sold to Hannah Weed, S[outh] on Robert Hoskins, W[est] On land I sold to my bro Benj Weed, 25 rds in width, 120 rd leng, 21 A[cres] 20 R[od]." 26 To his brother, Benjamin, he deeds a parcel of land on "Tree Hill so called at West end of my two lots that I had of Thrall & Higley on the S. side thereof b. as follows, N. on Joseph Weeds, E. on Dorcas Weeds, S. on Robert Hoskins, W. on West End of sd lots 25 rods wd. 120 R long. Holcomb," in all 21 acres. 28 On 12 February 1774, Aaron sold 18 acres of land that he had previously purchased from Abel Gossard29 and, on 15 February 1775, Aaron sold land to Ezra Gossard, including 1/3 part of a saw mill.30 Between those two transactions, on 1 February 1775, Aaron received from his brother, Moses, one half of an 80 acre parcel, bounded by the land of Aaron Gossard and lying on the west side of the river (i.e., the West Branch of the Salmon Brook) and the west side of the highway from the plian to Salmon Brook.31 Aaron is listed in the 1790 census for Granby, Hartford County, CT with 2 males 16 years and up, 2 males under 16 years, and 2 females. In 1800 he is the Aaron Weed listed in Barkhamsted in Litchfield County. Aaron died sometime after 1800 in Hannibal, NY, at that time a part of Onondaga County. According to Ellen Northway, a great-granddaughter of Aaron Weed, he came to Hannibal, NY sometime after his son, Cephas (Ellen's grandfather). 32 i 6. 7. ii iii iv v vi vii Children: Vira (or Sophina) WEED married (1) (.....) Among the numerous land transactions among the children of Joseph Weed in October 1772, was that transaction of 19 October where Moses deeded land to his mother in the Samolm Brook parish on the "Tree Hill so called lying N. of my dwelling house." The land is described as being "bound SW corner edge of rocks a little S. of a Spring at the E. side of my improved land. From Rock running W. by the old chimney of the old house." In addition to the land, he also gave his mother the full use of the South room of his house, along with the chamber above, and 1/3 part of the cellar and 1/3 part of the barn. 37 On 29 November 1775, Moses received a deed from his brother-in-law, John Matson, "who guar[anteed?] use of lands ets. belonging to my beloved wife Dorcas Matson." 38 In 1790 Moses built a small saltbox house in West Granby where Moses and his family farmed. This house still stands today and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This house, called the Weed-Enders House for its first and last occupants, has been moved from its original location to 208 Salmon Brook Street in Granby and today is maintained by the Salmon Brook Historical Society. To one Marilda Loomis "wife of George Loomis the use and improvement of the lot of land in Lebonan in the County of Madison, state of New York, which I purchased of one Monger during her natural life." Before coming to New York State about 1805 he lived with his family in Barkhamsted, Litchfield, CT where his father is listed in the Federal Census for 1800. 67 He married, probably in Onondaga Co., NY, 68 Sarah FELLOWS, who was born 1792, in Luzerne Co., PA, 69 (daughter of Obil FELLOWS and Lois PLANT). In 1805 Joseph was in Hannibal Center, then in Onondaga Co, NY and today is in Oswego, Co. He was among the first settlers there along with Watson Earl, Samuel Baron, Sterling Moore, David Wilson and Israel Messenger.70 The Messenger family was a well known one in the Simsbury/Granby area of Hartford Co., CT. The date of either Joseph or his wife, Sarah, is unknown but Joseph is no longer listed in the census for that area after 1820.71 Children: 17. i Fellows Obel born 5 Sep 1810. 18. ii Joseph. iii Alonzo WEED. iv Climena WEED married (.....) BRIGGS, and had one daughter who died when she was 3 years old.72 Ellen Northway notes that her mother, Anna Weed Northway, thinks that Climena lived for a time with her brother Fellows in Lockport, NY. The 1850 census for Lockport does in fact list a Climena Beacharles, 34 years old, and Timothy Beacharles, 24 years old, both born in NY. It is possible that this Climena and her husband, and the Biggs noted above is in error. v Fidelia WEED. 8. Cephas WEED was born 24 May 1785, in West, Granby, CT, 73 He married (1) on 8 Feb 1808, in Hannibal or Marcellus, NY,74 Anna BAKER, (daughter of Lewis BAKER and Lois WALKER). He married (2) in 1827,75 Lois BAKER, (daughter of Lewis BAKER and Lois WALKER), the sister of his first wife. Cephas left NY and moved west, arriving in Kenosha, WI in October 1835. The 1850 census for WI finds Cephas Weed, his wife, Lois, and children: Justin, Anna, William W., Lewis B., James J., and John, living in the Town of Pike in Kenosha County, WI. Wisconsin land records show two records for Cephas Weed in Kenosha Co., 80 acres in 1840 and 160 acres in 1843. Cephas died 3 Mar 1858, Kenosha Co., WI.76

The first of these was the Town Meeting held on 2 Oct 1843, called for the purpose of choosing Assessors and Board of Relief, where Samuel was chosen as Moderator. At this same meeting Samuel was chosen as a member of the Board of Relief, a committee charged with the responsibility of overseeing the care of paupers in the town. 163 The following year at the 7 Oct 1844 Town Meeting, he was reappointed member of that Board. 164 Highway and road matters were of special interest to the settlers of Granby. The members present at the meeting voted to oppose Arnold Edwards' petition, and agreed to alter the raod to Turkey Hills and to widen the road at Sherman Nooneys orchard. 165 Two years later at a special meeting held on 23 Jan 1847, highway construction was again the subject. In this instance, Samuel was one of a three-man committee appointed to confer with George Viets, a town resident, and to find if he would be willing to pay part of the expense as a part of highway litigation. Viest declined. 166 At the 6 October 1845 Town Meeting, Samuel was appointed Special Commissioner on Licenses for Sale of Wines and Spiritous Liquors; at the 2 October 1848 Town Meeting he was chosen Hayward (pound keeper) for the First Society; on 1 October 1849 he was chosen Highway Surveyer for District 9 in the First Society; on the first Monday in April 1852 he was elected as Justice of the Peace to serve for two years; and on 4 October 1852 he was chosen Hayward and Pound Keeper for the Salmon Brook Society, District 9.167 Samuel died on 23 Mar 1881, West Granby, Hartford, CT.
