Christian Fasting - What is it?

What is Christian fasting? Biblically, fasting is abstaining from food, drink, sleep or sex to focus on a period of spiritual growth. Specifically, we humbly deny something of the flesh to glorify God, enhance our spirit, and go deeper in our prayer life.

Why should I fast?

Are you in need of healing or a miracle? Do you need the tender touch of God in your life? Is there a dream inside you that only He can make possible? Are you in need of a fresh encounter? Do you desire a deeper, more intimate and powerful relationship with the Lord? Are you ready to have heightened sensitivity to the desires of God? Do you need to break away from bondages that have been holding you hostage? Is there a friend or loved one that needs Salvation? Do you desire to know God's will for your life?

Focusing Deeper on God

Christian fasting isn't some kind of a "work" that's commanded by Christ or required by Scripture. However, that doesn't mean that fasting isn't recommended as a part of our spiritual growth. The Book of Acts records believers fasting before they made important decisions (Acts 13:4; 14:23). Fasting and prayer are often linked together (Luke 2:37; 5:33). Too often, the focus of fasting is on the lack of food. However, the purpose of fasting is to take our eyes off the things of this world and instead focus on God. Fasting is a way to demonstrate to God and to ourselves that we are serious about our relationship with Him. Although fasting in Scripture is almost always a fasting from food, there are other ways to fast. Anything you can temporarily give up in order to better focus on God can be considered a fast (1 Corinthians 7:1-5). Fasting should be limited to a set time, especially when the fasting is from food. Extended periods of time without eating are harmful to the body. Fasting is not intended to punish our flesh, but to focus on God. Fasting should not be considered a "dieting method" either. We shouldn't fast to lose weight, but rather to gain deeper fellowship with God. Yes, anyone can fast. Some may not be able to fast from food (diabetics, for example), but everyone can temporarily give up something in order to focus on God. Even unplugging the television for a period of time can be an effective fast. Yes, it's a good idea for believers to fast from time to time. Fasting is not required in Scripture, but it's highly recommended. The only Biblical reason to fast is to develop a closer walk with God. By taking our eyes off the things of this world, we can focus better on Christ. "When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you" (Matthew 6:16-18).

Fasting, Praying & Reading Gods Word go hand in hand

When you fast, also pray for Gods purpose and plan for your life to be revealed. Fast and pray about every major decision in your life. Simply put, fasting is a way to conquer the physical and open the door to the supernatural in your life. When you deny your body, you feed your spirit and grow closer to the Lord. 2 Chronicles 7:14 says, Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land. Fasting is another way in which we humble ourselves before God so that we can hear Him speak to our lives.

Christian Fasting - A Lifestyle of Servant Living

Christian fasting is more than denying ourselves food or something else of the flesh - it's a sacrificial lifestyle before God. In Isaiah 58, we learn what a "true fast" is. It's not just a one-time act of humility and denial before God, it's a lifestyle of servant ministry to others. As Isaiah tells us, fasting encourages humility, loosens the chains of injustice, unties the chords of the yoke, frees the oppressed, feeds the hungry, provides for the poor, and clothes the naked. This concept of fasting isn't a one day thing - it's a lifestyle of servant living for God and others. "Then your light shall break forth like the morning, your healing shall spring forth speedily, and your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry, and He will say, 'Here I am' (Isaiah 58:8-9). By taking our eyes off the things of this world, we can focus better on Christ. Fasting is not a way to get God to do what we want. Fasting is a means through which God changes us. Fasting is not a way to appear more spiritual than others. Fasting is to be done in a spirit of humility and a joyful attitude. Matthew 6:16-18 declares, When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Types of Fasts
Be sure to consult your doctor before beginning a fast if you have any type of medical condition. Pregnant & nursing women | sick & elderly people | young kids - should not fast necessary nutrition/meals. The Full Fast Drink only liquids - mostly water. Make up (in your own heart after seeking Gods will) how you would want to approach this type of fast. (some recommend including clear broth and/or freshly juiced fruits and vegetables to maintain your strength, while others feel led to drink only water). The Daniel Fast The most frequently used example of a partial fast is found in Daniel chapter 10. The Daniel Fast is a fast from meats, sweets, breads and any drink except for water. (See below for a list of foods). The Partial Fast involves abstaining from just certain foods. You can live on just certain foods during the duration of this fast (such as bread and water), or you may choose to fast a certain meal each day. The hours that you sleep should not be considered part of your fasting. The Media Fast involves setting aside television, radio, newspapers, social media (facebook/twitter) and other forms of entertainment to seek the Lord.

Common Questions
I ate something that wasnt on my fast; do I need to start again? No, think of fasting as a marathon rather than a sprint. Dont give up! If you fall down, get up and keep trying. Conquering your stomach is difficult but youll make it! Do I continue exercising while fasting? For most people, moderate exercise is ok. If you are on a complete fast you will not have the energy for exercise. What about kids & students? They are encouraged to fast media, music, tv, movies, social media ... a favorite dessert, snack ... junk food. Growing children should not be fasting their meals. Instead be aware of making healthy choices, saying no to treats and encouraged to have Bible time, devotions ... journaling etc. What if I have a manual labor job? If you have a job that requires you to expend a lot of physical or mental energy, you may want to consider a full fast only when you are not at work and commit to a partial fast that allows you to receive enough nutrition to perform your job. We encourage you to seek God about your commitment and follow His lead. The other extreme is NOT denying your flesh because you are taking the easy way out. Any special advice while I fast? Dress warmly - you can expect to feel colder during a fast, especially in your hands and feet. Use warm, not hot, water for showers and baths. Avoid ice cold beverages. You will experience weakness (don't be alarmed!). Fast in secret - don't tell others you are fasting; it is between you and the Lord. What could I expect while fasting? Possible side effects vary with different individuals. Most of the more severe side effects are experienced in water only fasts. Here are a few symptoms some have experienced: headache, nausea, low fever, sleeplessness, stomach pains, feelings of loneliness, and thoughts of doubt and unbelief. It is all part of subduing the flesh. If new to fasting, its important that you walk through it with others to guarantee success. How should I behave during my fast? Jesus said in Matthew 6:16 (TMNT) When you practice some appetite-denying discipline to better concentrate on God, don't make a production out of it. It might turn you into a small-time celebrity but it won't make you a

saint. If you 'go into training' inwardly, act normal outwardly. Shampoo and comb your hair, brush your teeth, wash your face. God doesn't require attention-getting devices. He won't overlook what you are doing; he'll reward you well.

A prepared dressing that fits the Daniel Fast is Newmans Own Oil and Vinegar Salad Dressing. You can also make your own salad dressings and there are many recipes in the Daniel Fast

Homemade Dijon Mustard: Ingredients: 2 cups dry white wine vinegar 1 cup finely chopped onions 2 cloves garlic, finely minced 4 ounces dry mustard 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 2 teaspoons salt Few drops Tabasco Directions: Combine vinegar, onion and garlic. Heat to boiling and simmer for five minutes. Pour into medium bowl to cool. Add dry mustard to a small sauce pan. Now pour the vinegar mixture through a strainer into the saucepan, whisking until very smooth. Heat slowly, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens. Allow to cool and then pour into non-metallic covered container. For best results, chill at last two days before using. This mixture will stay fresh in the refrigerator for several weeks. After the fast you can add honey as a sweetener.

In place of morning eggs: 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 medium onion, sliced 1/2 green pepper, chopped 1 cup firm tofu, diced in bite-sized pieces garlic salt to taste Italian herbs to taste Directions: Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add oil and heat for a couple minutes. Add the onions and green peppers and stir fry for 2-3 minutes. Add tofu, garlic salt and Italian herbs. Continue to cook until vegetables are soft. Makes two servings. The tofu is about the same consistency as egg whites and it soaks up the flavors of whatever its being cooked with. Very easy, tastes great, and lot of protein.
