FEBRUARY 2013
Dear Parishioners
It has felt rather strange stepping back into the editor role this month but rather nice in a way to be receiving emails from correspondents with whom I have not communicated for 12 months! Thank you to the wonderful people who stepped into the Distributor vacancies in the Dec/Jan issue so willingly. I would be grateful if you could spare a minute to look at page 18. Iain Thompson is leaving the magazine 'team' on 1st May 2013 and we would like to hear from someone in the Parish who could take on his role. Once the adverts have been allocated for the year, in January, there is very little to do thereafter. Please ring me if f you would like an informal chat about the role, on 01553 636275. Wishing you all the very best for 2013 Sarah (Renwick) The magazine is now also available on line at www.gaytongroupofparishes.org www.gaytonnews.co.uk Copy in by the 18th February, please. Delivery date is 1st March.

Lent that's when we give things up, isn't it? I used to give up speeding for Lent until I got points on my licence and decided to give speeding up for good. This year, Lent starts early: Ash Wednesday is on 13 February. But while Christians might be marking their foreheads with the ashes of repentance, and lots of people wonder what to cut out, everything else will be bursting out in new life; the birds singing fit to bust, and snowdrops, aconites and crocuses making bright splashes on the ground. And the day after Ash Wednesday? Valentine's Day! How can Lent be a time for giving up, when all nature is rejoicing? The Gospels of St. Matthew and St. Luke say that Jesus went into the wilderness and fasted for forty days. That's why we give up the things we find tempting. (I haven't ever managed to give up coffee). After forty days Jesus was hungry and the devil turned up and tried to persuade him to change stones into bread. The devil followed this with two more extravagant ideas: that Jesus should throw himself from the top of the Temple so that the angels would catch him, and that, if Jesus worshipped him, the devil would give him all the kingdoms of the world. Jesus rejected all these suggestions. Whether you believe the devil was there in person, or whether you think these ideas were going through Jesus's mind, what is clear is this: Jesus had gone into the wilderness to plan his future, and he rejected any ambition for worldly power and glory. Instead, as his work among the Jews showed, he decided to go out to people, help them and teach them, not as someone who was grander than they were, but as one with ordinary people, however sick, or poor, or young they might be. That's the other side of Lent, the side that fits with the birdsong and crocuses. Let's see how, like Jesus, we can go out to serve people in our communities, and leave the winter of indifference far behind. Why not live in the fast lane the Jesus way? Nell Steele, Lay Preacher

A year to remember'
What a fantastic year 2012 was! The Olympics and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee are things that will be remembered by young and old alike for years and years to come. But what a dreadful start it was for Ashwicken Church with the theft of our Eagle lectern. Sadly nothing more has been heard of it but the insurers settled very quickly and the necessary repairs to the damaged door were swiftly carried out. What to do with the insurance money was subject to much thought and as you know two ideas were put forward to replace our lost heritage with something that would enhance the Church. The Ashwicken Shell has already been featured in the magazine, creating lots of interest as it has been used for baptisms through the year. It makes the day just that little bit more special. Something that is more visible to everyone who visits the Church now is the Queen's Diamond Jubilee window that was installed in the porch in the week before Christmas. It is a splendid feature for our simple country Church showing the Queen's cipher (the Royal Crown and the Queen's initials).
And so a magnificent year came to a fitting end and a very sorry situation was redeemed by some things we can all enjoy and take pride in.

Cllr. Murphy's County Council report stated that various highway issues had been addressed. After the Sibelco Liaison meeting Cllr. Crane was pleased to announce that MIN39 which is still within the MDF is not being pursued at the moment. Council will continue to monitor this. Sibelco has also undertaken to get rid of the encroaching gorse and repair some fencing on the permissive footpath parallel to East Winch Road. The Parish Council was sad to hear that the New Village hall build has been cancelled. Their thanks to Cllrs. Rosheen and Tony Crane were recorded for their tireless hard work in trying to get this scheme off the ground. The Parish Council meets next on 13th February 2013 at 7.30 in the Village Hall. All welcome.
The report from our PCSO was presented. No crimes had been reported in Ashwicken and no anti-social behaviour reported in the Parish since 15.11.12. Unfortunately there had been a report of theft of diesel from business premises in Leziate and a handbag left on a bench in Bawsey. We were disappointed to hear that residents had seen and heard scramble bikes in the area opposite Holt House Lane and this will be reported immediately to our PCSO. The PIM (Pre Inquiry Meeting) was held on 28th November, for the Public Inquiry into the proposed incinerator. Although a PIM is concerned with the formalities and the timetable of the Inquiry it was good to see that the Inspector genuinely wanted to hear from the residents of King's Lynn and gave them a chance to speak. However the acoustics were very bad and some of the 400 odd attendees had to leave the meeting early because of this issue. The Parish Council welcomed a new Parish Counciller, Alan Smith. Alan has a wealth of experience and we are all looking forward to working with him. Alan Smith has also taken over the role of Chair of Homewatch so will be reporting to the Parish Council Cllr. Beales sent a report from the Borough Council. He has taken on board the concerns about the Mart and the use of the Corn Exchange for the Public Inquiry and has raised the issue of shuttle buses and free parking as it is essential there is good public access.

The December party meeting with 16 members was a very enjoyable occasion. Members brought delicious food and crackers were pulled, hats donned and jokes read out. The Village Hall's Christmas lights and decorations all looked lovely. The 2013 programme was finalised and looks like being an interesting year ahead. The serviette ring competition was won by Sylvia Webber, second was Mary Ryan. Time ran out for the Beetle Drive, which will held at a future meeting. Unfortunately the January meeting had to be cancelled because of heavy snow so the next meeting will be on 19 February. Sadly, President Eileen Baxter's husband David died on 4 January and our love and prayers go out to her. We all knew David, he was great fun to be with. Wendy Twite

Incinerator: Nell Steele had been to a joint meeting of several parish councils opposing the Cory Wheelabrator application, and reported that they were evaluating which of several topics to concentrate on. The Council voted by a majority to donate 100 towards expert legal advice in presenting the case. The budget: Council voted, again by a majority, to increase the precept to 10,000. The difficulty was that the Council would need extra funds to part pay for village improvements but there had been no survey of priorities done. Grants are presently available for minor road improvements, such as the construction of a trod, or for playground equipment, but usually for no more than 50% of the cost.
Change of date
The weekend to celebrate the life of Elizabeth has been changed to 27/28 July 2013 from June. Visitors will be able to learn more about her and look at the history of St Celias church. You may also like to share with us your recollections of the church and village. The Church service on 14 February remains unchanged. Norfolk Churches Trust, who care for St Cecilia's, are kindly supporting these events. We do hope you will join us at both events. Contact: charlottepaton@onetel.com
Now we hear that we are in danger for heavy snow and blizzards for the weekend. If that is so it brings back memories of 1983 when heavy snow was followed by strong northerly winds. All the snow was blown off the fields filling in Broad Drove to the tops of the hedges. We were stranded up here for several days until Mr.Coe dug us out with his machinery. The stubble field behind our house will be sugar beet this year. Turkey manure is being spread to help with the fertility of the land. This has attracted some two thousand sea gulls which presumably are feeding on the muck (or the invertebrates living in it). Even considering the harsh weather this seems to be no accounting for taste! However it does make for a most remarkable scene to watch them wheeling over the tractors whilst the spreaders are at work. These dark nights we watch a lot of television. We have recently been joined in this past time by Jake the dog. He sits on his own special seat waiting for a glimpse of any quadruped especially if they appear dog like. They are then greeted with much excitement and barking which generally disturbs the whole programme, much to the ladies delight. Unfortunately a recent episode of Africa showed a primate baring a very large set of teeth. At this poor Jake fled to the kitchen and wasn't seen until the end of the programme.

Gayton Evergreens
We start this New Year 2013 hoping that all our members are fit and well and in good spirits. November 21st 2012 now seems such a long time ago. However it was the day that started the Evergreens Christmas activities, with our Christmas lunch. This year the caterer was Mr Paul Witt who provided us with an excellent meal and beautifully decorated tables in the Gayton Jubilee Hall, it was enjoyed by over fifty members. After lunch entertainment was by the singing duo 'Chantel' who had everyone clapping and tapping their feet to the music of the 50s & 60s. The afternoon was brought to a close by the drawing of the raffle. December 19th, the Evergreens Carol service was enjoyed despite the Rev'd Ian Whittle being unable to get to us due to his car misbehaving. Lord and Lady Romney were both able to attend and Florence Newton played the organ. Readings were given and Carols were sung with gusto after which Sherry and Mince Pies were enjoyed by us all. Once again a lovely raffle was drawn before we all wished one another a 'Merry Christmas', and we were reminded that the next meeting would be next year, and here we are. January 16th 2013, Oh dear sooooo cold and to cap it all no heating in the Hall! Never mind not to be thwarted, the members who had braved the outside weather conditions were determined to enjoy the afternoon. With warming smiles and friendly chatter, five games of Bingo were played for prizes of groceries

before a very welcome cup of tea and biscuits. The usual raffle was then drawn to bring the afternoon to a close. Next meeting February 20th: The newly retired head gardener from Oxborough Hall will be giving a talk on his experience working there. Kath Roberts

Oh Dear, Gaytons Sewerage Problems! A concerned villager would like to share his thought on the problems Gayton has had nearly all winter this year and in previous years. We are experiencing the usual backing up of our foul water drain that puts certain facilities in our house out of use for periods of up to 10 days. When I ring Anglian Water (AW) I am informed that no one else from Gayton has contacted them about a problem (despite many inspection chambers on customer's properties being almost full to overflowing) which all too often turns out to be down to the fact that the Winch Road pumping station has packed up. One might well ask the question that if unmanned pumping stations send a radio signal to a monitoring console then why hasn't AW responded to a fault without waiting for someone to rebel at the inconvenience. During the latest episode that we are still experiencing, an AW employee informed me over the telephone that many customers are afraid that if they complain about a failure then they will receive a bill for the call out but that this is certainly not so.
Would you like therefore to take advantage of the research that has been done and follow these simple guidelines? In the event of an interruption to the sewage disposal service and the obvious inconvenience that this entails, Anglian Water customers are urged to ring the telephone number: 08457 145145. No charge will be made by Anglian Water for investigating a problem that may well be more speedily corrected. Name and contact details can be supplied upon application.

precautions when on the roads. In winter weather, driving conditions can deteriorate fast, making driving hazardous. As a result, we've been advising motorists to: Make sure all your car lights are working and you have no failed bulbs. Ensure that dirt, salt and snow are cleared away from light fixtures. Always ensure all windows are fully cleared of snow, frost and condensation before setting off on a journey - it is illegal to drive with obscured vision. Also clear snow from the top of the car as this can fall down and obscure your windscreen while you are driving. Keep windscreen washer fluid topped up as windscreens quickly become dirty from traffic spray and salt from the roads. Continued on page 39
