Welcome In Luke 8:18, Jesus said, Therefore consider carefully how you listen. He wanted His audience to not only hear His words, but allow His teachings to transform their perspective, their expectations, and their daily experiences. I wonder if we could be better listeners when we hear Gods Words being taught? Opening Prayer Read Romans 12:1-2, and pray that Gods Words, when read or spoken would transform you completely!

Family Time Lets play a game. This game is called Sermon Note-taking Scorecard Challenge. (*Leaders, you will need to pass out notecards or sheet of paper for people to keep score on. The reverse side of this weeks Guide has 24 statements regarding a persons sermon note taking practices. Have them add/subtract the point values ascribed to each statement. Give out a prize to the person with the highest total. Remember that these statements do not reflect the way a person must take notes, or that one must takes notes at all. It is simply a fun way of thinking through the way we listen to a sermon.) Kids Time -The Great Book Challenge: Provide each child with a pencil and a piece of paper. Challenge them to see how many books of the Bible they can write down. Award a prize to the person who lists the most correct books. Next, try to see how many of the 66 books you can come up with as a group. The leader can keep a master list as the kids shout out their answers. Once your group cant think of any more books, have them look through their Bibles to find which books are still missing. -Play telephone: Have the kids sit in a circle or a line. Think of a funny sentence and whisper it to the first person. The first person will then whisper what he or she heard to the next person and so on and so on. When the last person receives the message have that person share what he or she heard with the group. After playing this game for several rounds, talk with the kids about what it means to hear God? Ask them why it was difficult to hear in the game they were playing. Ask them questions about how we hear God today. Talk with them about how we can use the Bible and prayer to hear God. Adult Time I suspect that most people don't know how to listen to a sermon. It doesnt seem to matter how many years one may have sat through sermons and heard the words being said by a preacher/teacher of Gods Word. Ultimately, far too many sermons seem to pass through our eardrums without registering in our brain or reaching our heart. -Do you think theres a chance that God may be communicating moreor expecting more from your experience with listening to the teaching of Gods Word? -What makes it difficult for you to come ready to hear and be engaged by Gods Word? -What distracts you from being fully-present during the teaching of Gods Word? -Honestly, do you often come to hear the teacher or the Word? David Daniels, your CG teacher, a popular podcast preacher can help enhance your understanding of the Bible, but are you more interested in them, or what God has said? Prayer Time Lord, give us ears to HEAR you. Give us a thirst and a hunger for your word that is stronger than our desire to eat. Help us encourage each other to really listen to you and to fight off the distractions that keep us from engaging YOU.

Sermon Note-taking Scorecard Challenge

1. You dont take any notes during the sermon. = 0 points 2. You take notes on the bulletin = + 2 points 3. Your bulletin immediately enters the swirl of floorboard trash in your car, that may include ridiculous Taco Bell wrappers that try to convince you theres such a thing as the fourth meal between dinner and breakfast and is thus never to be seen again. = 0 points 4. You hand the bulletin back to the usher at the end, attempting to be green but forgetting youve scribbled in it and like the guy who half fills out the crossword puzzle in the Delta Sky Magazine, have ruined the fill in the blanks for the next person. = 3 points 5. You bring your own pen. = + 1 point 6. Its a uniball micro vision = + 2 points 7. In more than 1 color = + 3 points 8. You ask to borrow my pen. = 10 points 9. You chew on it in front of me during the middle of the sermon. = 1 million points 10. Your Bible has some sort of fanny pack like case that holds more office supplies than an Office Depot. = +3 points 11. You use a 5 star notebook = + 1 point 12. Its college ruled and not wide ruled which is for lazy people who need an acre of space to write. = +2 points 13. You use a Moleskine notebook = +4 points 14. You are constantly telling people you use a Moleskine notebook. = 0 points 15. You correct people when they mispronounce Moleskine = 3 points 16. You take all your notes on your iPhone or Blackberry. = +1 point 17. You check your email and or NFL scores in between notes = 2 points 18. You color code your notes = +1 points 19. Your color-coding system is 19% more complicated than the periodic table of elements. = +3 points 20. You run out of paper and instead scribble notes on the outside of your hand. = +1 point 21. You do an inadequate job of washing your hands and show up to work looking like Guy Pearce in the movie Momento with James 3:2, whoa! scrawled on your hand. = -3 points 22. You write your notes directly in your Bible. = +1 point 23. Your Bible is so small that youre forced to wear a jewelers eye magnifying glass to scribble tiny enough in the margins = + weird 24. Your bulletin is printed on ink repelling paper so instead of taking notes you just crumple it up in a ball of rage and throw it back at the ushers as you exit the building. = 6 points How did you score? 0-5 points = You should be ashamed of yourself. What are you doing, just listening?
