Our Father amongst the Saints Athanasius On the Incarnation of God the Word

Translated by Cyrillic from OrthodoxChristianity.net

We confess the Son of God who before the ages and from eternity was born from God the Father was born for our salvation from the Virgin Mary according to the flesh in the last of days, as the divine Apostle teaches, saying: But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman - Galatians 4:4 We confess that he is the Son of God. God according to the Spirit, Son of man according to the flesh. Not two natures, one Son, one [nature] to be adored, one not to be adored, but one incarnate nature of God the Word worshipped together with the flesh with one adoration. Not two sons, one being the Son of God, truly God and to be worshipped and the other a man from Mary who is not to be worshipped, who became the Son of God through grace as man. But from God is, as I said, one Son and God. He himself, not another, was born from Mary according to the flesh in the last of days, as the angel said to Mary the Theotokos: "How will this be since I am a virgin?" she asked "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God. - Luke 1:34-45 He therefore, the Son of God according to nature and not according to either grace or participation and truly God was born from the Virgin Mary. Man according to the flesh from Mary only, He himself being truly God and the Son of God according to the Spirit: suffering our sufferings according to the flesh, as it is written: Christ has suffered for us in the flesh - I Peter 4:1 and again: He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all - Romans 8:32 He stays impassible and immutable according to godhead, as is said by the prophet: I am God and I do not change - Malachi 3:6 He died our death according to the flesh for our sins so that he could take away death through [His own] death for our sakes according to the saying of the Apostle: Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? - I Corinthians 15:55

and again: Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures - I Corinthians 15:3 He stayed immortal and unconquered by death through the godhead as impassible Power 1 of God the Father according to the saying of Peter. He said: It was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. - Acts 2:24 He who ascended into the heavens and who sits on the right hand of the Father, according to the flesh of the Word taken up from the earth into the heavens, according to the saying of David: The Lord says to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand - Psalm 110:1 That is confirmed by the Lord himself and by the Apostles: according to the godhead incomprehensible, filling all things with the Eternal Father, as ineffable and fatherly 2 Power according to the teaching of Paul: Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. - I Corinthians 1:24 The same God and Son of God shall come again, as is foretold, to judge the living and the dead, as the Apostle said: He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. At that time each will receive their praise from God. - I Corinthians 4:5 If someone teaches something different than the Divine Scripture on these things, saying that the Son of God is one and the man from Mary, made son according to grace as we are, is another, that there are two sons, one the Son of God according to nature, the other, the man from Mary, according to grace; or if anyone shall say that the flesh of our Lord is from above and not from the Virgin Mary, or if someone thinks the godhead in the flesh reverted, confused, or changeable or if someone shall not adore the flesh of our Lord and, as being that of a man, deem it not to be adored as the flesh of the Lord and God, that one the Catholic Church anathematizes, heeding the apostolic saying: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be anathema. - Galatians 1:9
