Cars and bicycles share the lane. Many bike routes have signs showing the direction and distance to destinations. Bike routes are usually on streets that arent wide enough for bike lanes but are good streets for biking.

Release a bike from any B-station

1. Press the start button on the kiosk. 2. Follow the prompts on the touchscreen to purchase a membership/access at the kiosk. If youve already purchased a membership/access online, swipe the same credit card associated with your online account. 3. When prompted, enter the dock number of the bike you wish to release. 4. The kiosk will unlock the bike from the dock you chose. The dock holding the bike will beep, giving you 30 seconds to remove it before it is locked back down.

When the bus arrives, remain in line with your bicycle to prevent losing your place in line. Luggage and bicycles will be loaded before the passengers board the bus. Always allow the driver to open and close the baggage bin doors. Remove your front wheel (if quick release) and load your bicycle as compactly as possible into the baggage bin to accommodate additional bicycles or baggage. Once you have loaded your bicycle, you may return to your place in line to board the bus.

To cross an intersection, use the lane farthest to the right that points to where you are going. Follow lane markings to cross an intersection. If you cant change lanes to turn left, ride across the street to the other side and align your bike with traffic.

On-Street Bikeways Share the Road

Ride defensively Prepare for the unexpected and plan alternate maneuver to avoid conflict. Rules alone do not always protect bicyclists from injury. Be Alert. Be Visible. Ride Predictably.
Obey Traffic Signals and Signs Turning Left 2 Options
(1)AS A VEHICLE: Signal your intentions in advance. Move to the left turn lane, and complete the turn when it is safe. (2)AS A PEDESTRIAN: Ride to the far crosswalk and walk across.

Multi-Use Trails Shared Responsibilities

SHARING THE TRAIL

Keep to the right. Yield to pedestrians and slower moving traffic except when passing. Slow down when there are lots of users on the trail.

Share the trail. Denvers trails have been designed for a variety of users, and not only for one group. By following simple, common sense rules and courtesy, trail use will be safe and enjoyable.
Right-of-Way
Cyclists and In-line skaters must yield to pedestrians. Pedestrians always have the right-of-way.

Dismount As Posted
Dismount and walk across roadways or other posted locations. When choosing a pedestrian style crossing across the flow of traffic, cross only when it is safe to do so.

YES YES

NO

As a vehicle, bicycles must obey all the Rules of the Road. Cyclists have the same privileges and duties as other traffic.

NO YES

Ride to the Right in a Straight Line

Avoid dodging between parked cars. Ride in a straight line at least three feet away from the curb to allow room for moving around road hazards. Watch for cars entering from driveways.

Keep To The Right

All trail users must keep to the right except when passing or turning left. Move off the trail to the right when stopping.

Be Careful at Intersections
The majority of urban bicycle accidents take place at intersections. Proceed carefully, make sure you are visible, and signal your intentions. Vehicles making turns can be particularly dangerous.

Signal To Others
Cyclists: when approaching others, sound your bell or horn early, then pass safely on the left. Pedestrians: acknowledge with a wave when someone is overtaking, then step to the right.

Use your path. Dont bike on designated walking or running paths. Be careful at crossings. Look both ways. Cyclists: yield to through traffic at intersections. Remember, pedestrians have the right of way. Pedestrians: exercise caution. Be aware that cyclists and skaters require lots of room to stop.

Ride Appropriately
Ride according to conditions: traffic, trails, weather, bicycle and fitness. Use caution on hills, under/over bridges, bends, and when the trails are busy.

Beware of Car Doors

The Door Zone is the 4-foot area along the side of a parked car where an opening door can hit and seriously injure a cyclist.

Be wary of parked cars. Motorists can unexpectedly open doors. Ride a car door width away from parked cars.

Make Eye Contact

Confirm that you are seen. Establish eye contact with motorists to insure they know you are on the road. Share the road in a polite and courteous manner.

Be Alert
*

NO
When riding in a bike lane, ride on the left side of the laneat least 4 feet from parked cars.

Scan the Road Behind

Look over your shoulder to check regularly and use a mirror to monitor traffic. Although bicycles have equal right to the road, be prepared to maneuver for safety.

Merge Correctly Be Courteous

Share the road and the responsibilities. Motorists and cyclists get along much better when showing courtesy and consideration towards each other. Look both ways. Bicyclists: yield to through traffic; at intersections, pedestrians have the right-of-way. Pedestrians: excercise caution; be aware of bicyclists stopping limitations.

Watch for slippery sections covered by ice, loose gravel or silt. Be sure the trail is clear of obstructions ahead. Ring bell for others where visibility is restricted such as on hills and turns.

YES
Look inside each parked car before you pass it. If youre unable to see someone inside or you spot someone inside, move outside the Door Zone or slow down and pass carefully. Watch behind you. Keep track of traffic behind you, so youll know whether you have enough room if you must swerve suddenly out of the Door Zone. A mirror helps you see traffic behind you as you pedal forward.

Respect Nature
Do not disturb or feed wildlife. Keep to well established trails to protect habitat. Do not collect plant or animal material.

Use Appropriate Lane

Avoid being in a right turn-only lane if you plan to proceed straight through. Move into the straightthrough lane early. In narrow lanes or slow traffic, it may be safer to take the whole lane.

Commuter Cycling
Transportation becomes recreation; the necessary jaunt becomes a pleasurable and healthy journey. Plan your trip and prepare for sudden weather changes. Bring a set of clothes and freshen up at work.
Passing on your left.

Advise others when passing. Sound your bell or horn or call out when approaching pedestrians or slower cyclists. Then pass safely on the left.

Use Appropriate Trail

Where twinned sections of trail exist, use the appropriate trail as posted. Wheels and Heels: cyclists and skaters on one trail, and walkers and joggers on the other.

Bike Laws and Bike Safety

Bicyclists are reminded that bicycles are defined as vehicles by Colorado Statute 42-1-102 (6) Bicyclists have all of the rights and duties applicable to the driver of any other vehicle... Always ride with traffic, as far to the right as you feel safe. Riding Two Abreast
Bicyclists may ride two abreast. Riding two abreast shall not impede the normal and reasonable movement of traffic and, on a laned roadway, shall ride within a single lane.

COMMUNICATE
LEFT RIGHT (OR) RIGHT STOP

CYCLIST
Always wear a bicycle helmet to reduce the risk of permanent injury or death from a crash. To make sure your helmet fits right, put it on then use the eyes/ears/mouth test. Eyes: When you look up you should see the front rim. If not, your helmet wont protect your forehead. Ears: The side straps should come to a V just below each ear. Mouth: When you open your mouth wide, you should feel the helmet push down on your head. If your helmet doesnt pass the test, adjust its buckles. Wear bright clothing, use lights, reectors, a bell and a mirror to see, be seen and be heard.

Use hand signals so that drivers know where youre going. Signal all your turns and stops ahead of time. Also, before turning, look over your shoulder for any traffic. Check and only move when its safe.

Stay Off Sidewalks

Bicyclists are prohibited from using sidewalks unless: the sidewalk is part of a designated bike route, within one block of preparing to mount/ dismount at parking (speed limit 6 MPH), or engaged in delivering newspapers. Always yield to pedestrians.

Make eye contact. Confirming eye contact with motorists helps them know that youre on the road.

Consider using the other equipment illustrated below to make your ride safer and more comfortable. Helmet Bright/light colored clothing Rear light and reectors Rear rack Panniers Bell or horn

See. Be seen. Be heard. Use lights at night or when visibility is poor. A white headlight and rear red reflector are required by law. Flashing lights are especially effective. Use bike reflectors, reflective clothing and a bell. Never use earphones. You wont be able to hear whats going on around you.

Night Riding At night, bicycles should be equipped with a front white light visible to 500 feet and a rear red reflector visible when illuminated by headlights to 600 feet. One Person Per Bike Riding double is only permitted when carrying a child in an approved carrier or when riding on a tandem bicycle. Children should always wear a helmet.
