EXPERIMENT 6: RESONANCE AND THE SPEED OF SOUND

Abstract Sound is a wave created by vibrating objects, travelling through a medium and moving from one location to another. In this experiment, a closed tube, made by partially filling a large graduated cylinder with water, a tuning fork with a standardized frequency, and a rubber mallet were used. The procedure required that the graduated cylinder contained an adequate level of water in order to elicit a distinct sound from the tuning fork, which was vibrated using a rubber mallet, and these adjustments in the water level were made using a serological pipette, an aspirator, and a beaker of water. Once the desired water level was achieved, the wavelength was computed for using the diameter of the graduated cylinder and the length of the graduated cylinder minus the length of the water level, and the wavelength was then multiplied to the frequency of the tuning fork in order to get the experimental speed of sound. The actual speed of sound was computed using the temperature inside the graduated cylinder, which was measured using a thermometer, and the absolute error and the relative error were then computed for using the actual and experimental speeds of sound computed.

Questions and Problems: 1. Through what fraction of a vibration has the prong of a tuning fork moved while the sound traveled down to the water surface inside the pipe and reflected back up to the fork again? The prong of the tuning fork vibrated of a cycle because the sound of wave travelled of a wave down and of a wave up. 2. What is the approximate wavelength of the fundamental frequency of a closed tube 35.0 cm long if the tube has a diameter of 4.000 cm? = 4 [ L + (0.3)(D) ] = 4 [ 35.0 + (0.3)(4.000) ]

= 4 [ 35.0 + 1.200 ] = 4 [ 36.2 ] = 145 cm 3. A tuning fork of frequency 384 Hz exhibits resonance with a closed tube 20.0 cm long and 4.000 cm in diameter. What is the speed of sound wave? V =f V= 4 [ L + (0.3)(D) ] ( f ) V= 4 [ 20.0 + (0.3)(4.000) ] ( 384 Hz ) V= 4 [ 20.0 + 1.200 ] ( 384 Hz ) V= 4 [21.2 ] ( 384 ) V= 32 600 cm/sec
