Open Lecture Series

Directorate of Psychology & Public Health

In 2013, we are opening up our Psychology lectures to sixth form and college students to experience university life on campus. The lectures available cover a range of topics such as intelligence, the psychology of language, and mental health. Our open lectures are listed below: Language with Dr Adam Galpin 9am-11am Tues 5th March 2013 Our command of rich languages is one of the things that makes us human, but language use is much more complex than it seems. In this lecture from our Introduction to Biological and Cognitive Psychology module, we explore the building blocks of language and its uses, including how it might support our thinking skills. Mental Health with Dr Linda Dubrow-Marshall 10am-12pm Fri 8th March 2013 In the lecture on Mental Health from our Individual Differences module, we will explore historical to contemporary views of normal versus abnormal behaviour. We will look at how psychology describes psychological disorders and the role of individual differences within them. Evolution and DNA with Janine Crosbie 9-11am Tues 12th March 2013 This lecture on Evolution and DNA introduces Biological Psychology in our Introduction to Biological and Cognitive Psychology module. Why are you so wonderful? Is it an accident or a product of evolution? In this lecture we will consider DNA as the missing link for explaining what Darwin couldnt; the mystery of how traits are passed on.
