Sundial Setup

When the sundial is setup and orientated north, the shadow from this vertical sundial will indicate the approximate time of day. Variations between the indicated sundial time wrist watch time is dependant on where you are in your tine zone and on the natural occurring sun time deviations known as The Equation of Time (for a detailed explanation of this phenomena go to our web site @ www.survivalschool.com/Articles) To assemble your Right Angle sundial:

Preparation
1. Choose which sundial time face you want to use (Standard or Daylight Saving Time). We recommend you choose the Daylight Saving Time decal (if your state use it) since most people will be using the tool in the summer, when Daylight Saving Time will be in effect. 2. Remove the backing from the label and place the decal on the GRAY side of the mirrored upright. Place the X on the decal DIRECTLY over the small hole in the upright. Trim any excess with the razor blade in your Survival Kit.

Setup
3. Insert the mirrored upright into either slot in the base (mirrored side toward compass). 4. Remove the brass pin from under the Velcro patch under the flap on the pouch 5. Insert the pin in the hole in the upright so that it extends over the face of the sundial decal. 6. Place the base on a flat surface in sun and orient it so that the mirrored side of the upright faces North 7. The shadow cast by the pin will indicate the approximate time of day.

The sundial face is also marked with , , and marks. These marks indicate when that portion of the day has already passed. This information will tell you how much daylight is left in the day. This information is especially useful if you plan to build a base camp or a shelter before dark. As a Rule of Thumb you will want to begin building your camp no later than the mark in the summer and at the mark in the winter (when more time is needed to build a substantial shelter and gather firewood fore the night)

Snare Wire
Included in the kit is a length of military grade trip wire fashioned to form a snare to trap game. The snare should be placed on a game trail or rabbit run, at the entrance of an animal hole or burrow. A spring pole can increase the effectiveness of the snare and can be made from any nearby green springy tree branch NOTE: The use of snares is illegal in many states unless you are in a real survival situation. We include the snare in the Survival Kit since many that use the Right Angle Survival Tool are often in situations where a survival situation may develop. Please observe your local laws.

Fire
Flint Fire Starting Embedded in the end of your Survival Tool base is a round rod of ferrocerium (the same material that is referred to as flint in lighters) that can be used to produce 1800oF sparks. You can start a fire by using it in the same way you would start a flint and steel fire (with a tinder material like char cloth) or, since these sparks are extremely hot, you can start a fire directly by igniting finely shredded tinder like jute (shred the jute twine included in the kit) or natural materials like milk weed tops, cattail down or cotton. Procedure 1. Place the tinder on a piece of paper, dry leaf, or piece of bark. This will keep it off the ground and prevent the tinder from absorbing moisture. 2. Hold the base of the Survival Tool above the tinder with the end with the embedded flint rod very close to the tinder. 3. Use the edge of a piece of metal (like the side of the included razor blade) and hold it at approx. a 45o angle on the flint. Scrape the metal down the flint with a firm stroke. A shower of sparks will onto the tinder, which will either catch a spark or burst into flames. 4. Add small twigs to the burning tinder, gradually increase their size until a sustained fire is established Fire Water Powder Fire Starting (available with the Diamond Sharpening Stone Package or sold separately) The Fire-Water Powder is located in the white tube in the side pocket of the Survival Tool pouch. To use the powder as a fire starter 1. Take the white tube out of the Survival Tool pouch and unscrew the cap. 2. Pour about of the powder in the tube in a pile on a flat piece of wood (Figure #1) 3. Use the flat of the angled end of the Survival Tool base and scrape it slowly and FIRMLY through the pile of powder. (Figure #2) 4. The powder should begin to spark and burn 5. Repeat step #3 if a fire ignition does not occur on your first attempt. Vary your speed and pressure scraping through the powder. Figure #1 NOTE: The intense heat of the igniting powder will leave a mark on the end of your Survival Tool base. You can substitute a small flat stick (instead of the Survival Tool base and scrape the Fire-Water powder with the stick to ignite it.

Magnifying Glass
The magnifying glass has NOT been added to the kit for fire starting* since other features on the tool will start a fire and are not dependant on sunlight. Rather, it has been included for tracking, medical purposes or general observation. The lens itself is a specially designed, optical grade 8X lens (which is the maximum magnification possible for the diameter of the lens). Tracking In true tracking of men or animals it is often necessary to look for small clues of the track (after the obvious tracks have disappeared). Clues like creases in blades of grass are often impossible to see with the naked eye, but with the aid of an 8-power lens are easy to see. Medical When in the woods you will find yourself constantly working with wood or walking through thorn bushes. The likelihood of getting a splinter or thorn under the skin is high. The magnifying glass is a valuable aid in removing such objects from under the skin. General Observation When out in nature there is a normally unseen world that comes to life when viewed through a magnifying glass. The 8-X lens will bring this world to life for you. *While it is possible to start a fire with this magnifying lens under ideal conditions, a larger diameter lens makes the process much easier.

Signal Mirror
It has been shown that a signal mirror can reflect the equivalent of 8 million-candle power thus making a signal mirror one of the most effective ways to get the attention of a target at distance from several hundred feet to over 20 miles. Few people realize how far mirror flashes will carry. For the best results the air should be clear and the sun high in the sky, BUT surprisingly strong reflections can be achieved even on hazy or overcast days. To insure that you are accurately flashing your target you must determine where your signal is going in order for it to be effective. Here is an easy way to do it.. 1. In one hand hold the mirror close to your face with the mirrored surface toward the target that you are trying to signal 2. Outstretch you other arm in front of you with your index and middle finger forming a V. 3. Using this V like a gun sight, place the object you are signaling inside the V. 4. Focus the reflection off of the mirror onto the V your fingers are making, then move the mirror (and its reflection) so that the reflection off the mirror moves from your fingers to the target you are signaling. 5. Using this method will insure that the reflection coincides with the direction of your intended target (even if it is moving).

Fishing Equipment
In a survival situation you will want to focus on catching small fish (as opposed to larger ones). Small fish are much easier to catch and 6 small fish will make as good of a meal as one larger one. 1. 2. 3. Unwind the 10 of fishing line wrapped under the cap of the white bottle. Remove either the JIG or the HOOK from the pockets on the underside of the pouches flap. Tie the HOOK on using a Polamar Knot or the JIG using the Uni-Knot

Palomar Knot

Double about 5 of line Pass this 5 loop through the eye of the hook Tie an overhand knot with the doubled line. Leave loose. Pull the end of the loop over the hook Pull the tag end and the main line tight. Trim excess.

4. You can bait the hook with live bait that you may be able to find under rocks or inside rotting logs. If live bait is not available use the curly-tail artificial bait included in the plastic bag in the rear compartment of the Survival Tool pouch. Hook the curly-tail so that it looks like this:

5. Place the jig or hook in the water, preferably just in front of a rock ledge, under a dock, or next to a downed tree. KEEP THE BAIT MOVING with alternate slow and fast jerks. 6. After catching your fish, you can use the eyes and internal organs of this fish as bait.
