Managing and Motivating Employees In Their Twenties

The article Managing and Motivating Employees in Their Twenties touched home because I feel that I am one of those employees in their early twenties who is always eager to learn and advance in the work place. I found some very interesting ways to motivate myself and other young employees. The five key take a ways that I learned and understood from this article were to ask frequent questions, not to make the rookie mistake of creating false reasons for praise, set very short-term projects, fire those who are not performing, and for the same reason, fire toxic employees immediately, especially if they have any interaction with younger people. The guidelines from the article have set an example of expectation for managing and motivating employees in their twenties. According to the Fertik (2011), the first option is to ask frequent questions. Ask questions that employees can relate too. This helps fellow employees realize that everyone has the same questions and need some of the same answers. The second is to not make the rookie mistake of creating false reasons for praise. The best perception is to be honest from the beginning and give praise when praise is earned. The third is to set very shortterm projects. Young employees have short attention spans. Set short term goals and young employees and get the job done faster without losing focus. The fourth is to fire those who are not performing. Performance is key when functioning in the workplace. The lack of work may rub off on fellow employees. If the employee is not being productive they should be fired. The last take a way that I learned is for the same reason, fire toxic employees immediately, especially

if they have any interaction with younger people. This leads to the expression one bad apple can ruin a bunch. The negativity can disrupt others and cause uproar with employees that do not fully understand and know how to ignore it (Fertik, 2011). All of these are experiences that I have noticed but never labeled. They seem very simplistic but environment changing as well. If I were a manger I would definitely follow these guidelines. If practiced every day I am sure they would lead to a better work place. This was a really informative article.
