Hydro power generation is identified as the method with highest potential to full fill the electrical energy requirements of Sri Lanka. The main reason for this identification is the shortage of fossil fuel resources in the country. Therefore theSri Lankan government has carried out many projects to promote the hydraulic power generation. `The Samanalwewa Power Plant project was launched to meet the increasing demand for electricity in the country marking an 8.2% annual

volume of electricity sales on average during the 19801985 periods. This project was recognized to be the most economical and effective measure to cope with shortage of electricity supply expected for the first half of the 1990s and was expected to make a great contribution to the national economy and improvement of the welfare of Sri Lanka. Therefore, this project was deemed to be of high priority. The samanala wawa power satation is equipped with two vertical shaft salient pole 3 phase generators each rated at 70.6 MW.The generator voltage is 10.5 kv and the output is 60 MW at 0.85 power factor at 50 Hz.The prime mover is a Francis turbine running at 500 rpm and generates 405 GWh of energy annually. A permeable [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permeability_(earth_sciences)] area of ground was found during the construction of the dam in 1988. Curtain grouting

this. However, as the reservoir was being filled, a large leak occurred on the side of the right bank, about 300 metres (980 ft) downstream from the dam, causing a landslip [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landslip] . The project was planned as a single purpose hydropower project. Therefore the effects on the agriculture and the environment of the area were taken into consideration very little during the development. Although an irrigational release valve (IRV) is there in the dam to supply water to the farmlands in the downstream areas, the yield and cultivable acreage has declined since the Samanalawewa project was commissioned Samanala wawa

Power Generation The expected amount of annual power generation at phase 1 was 462 GWh/year. This was revised to 403 GWh/year at the time of appraisal for the remedial works. The actual annual power generation was 271 GWh/year (1993 2005 average).
