The Most Beloved People of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.)

Umm Salama: One day the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) was seated when Fatima(A.S.) brought in a pot of kachi (a dish made of flour, sugar, fat, and spices). The Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) asked: Where is Ali (A.S.) and his two sons? Fatima (A.S.) replied: At home. The Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) said: Call them to me. Ali (A.S.), walking behind al-Hasan (A.S.) and al-Husayn(A.S.), and Fatima(A.S.)walking before them, came to the Holy Prophet(S.A.W.). As soon as the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) saw them he took his Khayabari robe lying on the bed and covered himself along with Ali (A.S.), Fatima A.S.), al-Hasan(A.S.), and al-Husayn(A.S.) and then said: O Allah! These are my Ahl al-Bayt and the most beloved of me. So keep away abomination from them and make them quite spotless. At this time Allah Almighty revealed this ayah: "And Allah only wishes to keep away..." Jumai ibn Umayr Taymi: My aunt and I entered upon Ayisha. She was asked: Who was the most beloved of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.)? She answered: Fatima (A.S.). She was again asked: And from among men? She said: Her husband Ali (A.S.), who as far as I know had always been fasting and staying up praying most of the night. The Best People The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): O Fatima! We are a household upon whom Allah has bestowed seven traits which has not bestowed on others neither before nor next to us: I am the seal of the prophets and the noblest person and the most beloved one of the Almighty Allah. I am your father and my successor is the best successor and the most beloved of

them near Allah, the one who is your husband. Our martyr is the best and the most beloved martyr of Allah, who is your uncle Hamzah ibn al-Muttalib, and is your father's uncle and your husband's uncle. Of us is the one who will fly in the Paradise with two green wings together with the angels wherever he wishes, who is your father's cousin and your husband's brother. Of us are two grand children of this Ummah, who are your two sons alHasan(A.S.) and al-Husayn(A.S.) who are the master of the youth in the paradise and their father is - I swear by the one who rightfully gave the mission of prophethood - better than the two.O Fatima! I swear by the one who rightfully gave me the mission of prophethood, the Mahdi of this Ummah is from these very two. The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): I am the master of the prophets and Ali bn Abi Talib(A.S.) is the chief of the Wasis successors and al-Hasan(A.S.) and al-Husayn(A.S.) are the Masters of the youth of Paradise, and the Imams after them are the leaders of the pious. Our friend is the friend of Allah, and our enemy is the enemy of Allah. Obedience to us is the obedience to Allah and disobedience to us is the disobedience to Allah Almighty, Allah suffices us and is the best Guardian. O Ali (A.S.)! I and you the Imams from among your ancestors are the masters of the world and the kings of the hereafter. Whoever knows us knows Allah and whoever does not know us does not know Allah the Almighty. Imam Ali (A.S.) - in a sermon describing the Noble Prophet (S.A.W.): His household is the best of Households and his family is the best of the families and his kindred is the best of the kindred. Holy Prophet's (S.A.W.) Mubahalah Accompanied by the Ahl al-Bayt (A.S.) Abd al-Rahman ibn Kathir quoted Jafar ibn Muhammad on the authority of his ancestor, on the authority of al-Hasan ibn Ali (A.S.) stating about the noble ayah of "Let us gather together our sons and your sons..." (3:61): The Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) came out, while of the "-selves", my father was with him and of the sons, I and my brother, and of the women of the people, my mother, Fatima(A.S.). We are his household and from his blood and flesh and soul, we are of him and he is of us. Jabir: Aqib and Tayyib came to the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.). He called them to Islam. They said O Muhammad (S.A.W.)! We have converted to Islam before you! The Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) said: you are telling lies and if you want, I can tell you what is preventing you of being Muslims. They said: tell us. The Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) declared: love of the cross and drinking wine and eating pork. Jabir proceeds to say: The Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) called the two to cursing each other and made an appointment with them for the early next morning. Early in the morning the Holy Prophet(S.A.W.) set off holding the hands of Ali(A.S.),Fatima(A.S.), al-Hasan(A.S.) and l-Husayn(A.S.) and sent for the two [to join them for cursing] but they refused to come and professed to the Holy Prophet's(S.A.W.)

for cursing] but they refused to come and professed to the Holy Prophet's(S.A.W.) rightfulness. The Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) said: I swear by the One who missioned me to the truth, if they had done what they had said, this valley would have poured fire over them. Jabir says: This ayah was revealed about them: "Say: come let us gather together-our sons and your sons, our woman and your woman, ourselves and yourselves"(3:61). Shabi quotes Jabir as saying: By "ourselves", the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) and Ali (A.S.), and by "our sons" al-Hasan(A.S.) and al-Husayn (A.S.) and by "our women" Fatima (A.S.) are meant. Those Charged with authority (Ulul Amr) Al-Imam Ali (A.S.): The Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) said: My partners are those whom Allah associated to Himself and to me and revealed this ayah about them: "O ye who believe, obey Allah and obey the Messenger..." (4:59). so if you differ in affairs among yourselves refer it to Allah, His Messenger and the authorities. I asked O Messenger of Allah! Who are they? He replied: You are the first of them. Hisham ibn Hasan: Upon people's allegiance to him in caliphate, al-Hasan ibn Ali(A.S.) delivered a sermon, saying: Obey us, that obeying us is obligatory, for obeying us is associated to obeying the Allah the Almighty and His prophet. Allah says: "O ye who believe, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those vested with authority from among you. And then if you quarrel concerning any matters, refer it to Allah and his Messenger," (4:59). If they had referred it to the Messenger and (to) those vested with authority amongst them, then they, who could discover the truth would have known it" (4:83). Imam al-Baqir (A.S.) - on the holy verse," O ye who believe, obey Allah, and obey the Messenger and those vested with authority": What is meant by the ayah is only addressed to us. Allah has commanded all believers to obey us up to the Day of Resurrection. Those Who Possess the Message The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): On the words of Allah "If ye realize not, ask of those who possess the Message" (16:43), by the "Message", I am intended and by" those who possess the Message" the Imams are intended. Imam al-Baqir (A.S.): On the noble verse of "If ye realize not, ask those who possess the Message": We are those who possess the Message. Imam al-Sadiq(A.S.): The "Message" has two meanings: The Holy Qur'an and Muhammad (S.A.W.) and in both meanings, "those to whom we revealed our Message", we are the addressees; as for the Message meaning the Holy Qur'an, Allah says," We sent to you the dhikr, (the reminder of the Quran) so that you may make clear to mankind what has been sent down to them and so they may reflect" and also says, "Verily it (the Qur'an) is a reminder to you and your people, and you shall soon be questioned about it"(43:44) and as for its meaning Muhammad(S.A.W.), it is said in the surah al-Talaq: "So you men of understanding-who have believed! Fear (the wrath of) Allah, Allah hath indeed sent down a

reminder to you... that Allah may bring those who believe and do good deeds out of darkness into Light"(65:10-11). Imam al-Sadiq(A.S.)- In a letter to his companions-: O group of the blessed and delivered ones! Verily Allah has completed his Grace to you by having bestowed the benevolence on you. Know that if any creature of Allah act arbitrarily and based on opinion and analogy, he has neither achieved Divine knowledge nor His authority. Allah has sent down the Holy Qur'an and has left in it the explanation for all things. Allah has appointed [certain] people for the Holy Qur'an and teaching it, and it is not within their option, whom Allah has bestowed the Ilm of the Holy Qur'an, to act arbitrarily and based on opinion and analogy. By giving them His Knowledge, Allah has made them free from doing so, and has given it especially to them and has left the knowledge with them; this is the Grace by which Allah has exalted them. These are verily the ones who possess the Message that Allah has commanded this Ummah to ask from. The Guardian of the Faith The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.) said to Ali ibn Abi Talib(A.S.): O Ali (A.S.)! I and you and your two sons al-Hasan(A.S.) and al-Husayn(A.S.) and al-Husayn's nine sons are foundations and cornerstones of Islam; whoever follows us will be delivered and whoever keeps aloof from us will face the Fire. The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): In any generation of my Ummah there will exist a practicer of Justice from my Ahl al-Bayt who will remove from this religion the distortions inflicted by the extremists and those who pretend to be religious and the interpretations of the impostors. And your Imams are verily your leaders toward the Almighty Allah; so look whom you are following in your Faith and prayers. Imam al-Reza (A.S.) -Describing the Imam-: He is the benevolent of Allah's servants and the guardian of the Divine Faith. Divine Gates The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): We are the gates to Allah through which the seekers of Guidance pass and by us the seekers of Guidance will be rightly guided. Imam al-Sadiq (A.S.): The successors (wasis) are verily the Gates to Allah through which people enter, and had they not existed, Allah Almighty would not have been known. The exalted Allah sends down evidence on his creatures through them. Allah's Chieftains The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.) said -to Ali (A.S.)- : There are three things by whose rightfulness I swear. That you and the successors after you are the chieftains who unless

through knowing you Allah will not be known; who except through knowing you (chieftains) and being known by you will not enter the paradise: and who unless by not knowing you (chieftains) and not being known by you will enter the Hell. Imam Ali(A.S.): -Describing the Resurrection- : The successors are the possessors (in charge of) the Path (Sirat) and standing on it; no one will enter the Paradise unless he knows them and they know him, and no one will enter the Fire unless he does not know them and they do not know him, for they are Allah's whom Allah has introduced the successors to when he took a covenant from them and has introduced them in His Book: "And on the Heights will be men who would know everyone by his marks"(7:46). They are the witnesses to their friends and the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) is witness over them. The Pillars of the Earth Imam al-Baqir(A.S.): Verily the Messenger of Allah(S.A.W.) is the Gate to (knowing) Allah which is the only gate to pass through and it is his path on which whoever travels will reach Allah the Almighty. After him, Amir al-Mu'minin Ali (A.S.) is such, and so is each Imam after the previous one. Allah Almighty has made them the pillars of the earth so that it does not cause to tremble its inhabitants, and has made them the foundations of Islam and the frontiers to its salvation path to which no one will find his way unless by their guidance, and the misled will not go astray except by failing to appeal to them. They are Allah's trustees in knowledge, and proofs and warnings that He has sent down. They are explicit guides for the earthling, the last of whom being as treated by Allah as the first of them. And no one will reach this high status unless by Allah's assistance. The Pillars of the World 115. The Messenger of Allah(S.A.W.) -describing the Imams descending from Ali(A.S.)-: They are my vicegerents, successors descendants and household... the Almighty Allah has held up the heaven by them, not to fall on the earth but by His leave, and has by them prevented the earth from trembling its inhabitants. The Asylum of the Earthlings The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): The stars secure the heavenly creatures and once the stars disappear, the heavenly beings will vanish too; and my Ahl al-Bayt shelter the People of Earth and when my Ahl al-Bayt departs, the People of Earth will be gone too. The Mine of Messengership Imam al-Husayn (A.S.) - To Utbah ibn Abi Sufyan - : We are the household of dignity, the Mine of Prophethood, and the signs of the Truth which Allah has trusted to us and Has made our tongues eloquent with. The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.): We are the household of the Prophethood tree and the

Messengership Mine and nobody except me would gain superiority over my Ahl al-Bayt. Imam al-Reza (S.A.W.) - in a sermon -: Praise be to Allah, Who has lauded Himself in His Book... And Allah's blessings be on Muhammad (S.A.W.), the Seal of the Prophets and the best of the people, and on his Ahl al-Bayt who are the household of Mercy and the Tree of Bounty and the Mine of Messengership, and a station frequented by the angels. The Foundations of the Truth The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.) -describing the Imams (A.S.)-: They are benevolent Imams; they are with the truth, and the truth is with them. Imam Ali (A.S.): Know that the Exalted Allah has appointed certain people for benevolence, certain foundations for the truth, and certain holders for obedience. Imam Ali (A.S.): Do not deviate from the truth and the ones related to it as, whoever takes others for us (the Ahl al-Bayt,) they will be (perished) and will lose this world and the hereafter. Imam al-Hadi (A.S.) - In the Ziyarah of Jame'ah in which the Imams are paid homage to -: The Truth is with you and among you and from you and toward you; you are the people of the Truth and it is yours. Commanders of Speech Imam Ali (A.S.): We are the commanders of speech which is rooted in us and has let down its branches hanging around from us. Imam al-Sadiq (A.S.) - describing the Imams (A.S.)-: Allah has appointed them as the cause of people's live, the light in the darkness, and the keys to speech. Peace with them [Ahl al-Bayt] is peace with the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) and war with them[Ahl al-Bayt] is war with the Holy Prophet(S.A.W.) Zayd ibn Arqam: The Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) said to Ali(A.S.),Fatima(A.S.), al-Hasan (A.S.), and al-Husayn(A.S.): I am at war with whomever is at war with you, and at peace and reconciliation with anyone who is at peace with you. Abu Hurayra said: The Holy Prophet(S.A.W.) looked at Ali(A.S.),al-Hasan(A.S.), alHusayn(A.S.), and Fatima(A.S.) and said: I am at war with whomever is at war with you and at peace and reconciliation with whomever is at peace with you. The Faith Begins with Them and Ends with Them The Messenger of Allah (A.S.) - to Ali (A.S.)- : O Ali! Allah has finalized the Faith [religion] by us as He has begun it by us and has, in our light, made their hearts intimate, after [being filled with] enmity and hatred. Imam al-Baqir (A.S.): O people! Where are you going and where are you taken to? By us, Allah has guided the first of you, and by us the last of you will be guided. No one is compared with them

The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.) said: We are a family with whom no one can be compared. Imam Ali (A.S.): No one of this ummah is comparable to the Family of Muhammad (S.A.W.) and anyone who is enjoying the blessings of this holy household can never be considered equal to them. Imam Ali (A.S.): We are the nobles and our pioneers are the pioneers of the Prophets. Our party is the party of Allah, and the rebellious party is the party of Satan; he who regards us equal to our enemies is not of us.
