REACTION PAPER: THE EMPERORS CLUB Everything begins with a smooth opening for Mr. Hundert. All of his students are active and inspired to learn in his class. Until the new student, Mr. Sedgewick Bell, walks into his classroom. Everything was stirred up. Mr. Hundert was challenged as Sedgewick made franks inside his class and came to a point that Mr. Hundert put him in shame. It was unavoidable for teachers to be in this situation. After meeting Sedgewicks father, Mr. Hiram Bell who is a senator in the movie, Mr. Hunderts view of Sedgewick changed. He came to believe that the reason Sedgewick wasnt performing well is because of his fathers lack of passion and support for his child. And, as the semester passed Mr. Hundert tried to give more attention on Sedgewicks progress. He motivates him. He gives him recognition. He even became unfavorable to some students like Martin Blythe, another well performing student aiming for the crown of Julies Cesar, just to help Sedgewick in his studies. The biggest twist happened after the ceremony and the crowning of Deepak Mehta as new Mr. Julius Cesar of St. Benedict Academy. Mr. Hundert did another favor for Sedgewick but in the end He learned that his student was cheating in front of everyone, aiming for a fake victory just to gain his fathers attention. Mr. Hundert felt deeply in pain. That instance was his greatest mistake. Then, after the flash back, came the scenario after 25 years (if Im not mistaken) where Mr. Hundert and his students gathered for a reunion organized by his favorite student. A reenactment of the past Mr. Julius Cesar competition was portrayed in front of the guests and with no surprise the new Sedgewick was still a cheater. But, Mr. Hundert didnt fall for the same trap. In the end, Mr. Hundert continued his teaching at the academy. Many new students came, including Mr. Blythes son. Mr. Hundert then decided to change and draw back to being unfavorable and unjust to his student. The movie was an eye opener. I realized that it wasnt wrong if we, teachers, have to attend with the needs of our students, particularly those who are weak. But, we should always realize that everything must be in moderation. Providing too much help to students will not make them learn but rather it will lead them to becoming disabled. Its because the students have to learn on their own. Our job as teachers is to ask them question and not to give them the answer, because the answer should come up from them. We just have to redirect their answers if they seem to be lost. We are no longer teachers, we are facilitators of learning.
