Title: Testing For Cations and Anions Aim: To investigate the cation and anion that present in an unknown

salt. Procedure: Refer to page 50 and 51 of Chemistry Lab Manual. Results: Part A Procedure Flame Test Observations Orange color flame Pink color flame Red color flame Oxalate Test White precipitate formed Ammonium Test Smell of ammonia produced Red litmus paper turns blue 3+ Iron Test Fe Solution turns deep red color 3+ 1. Fe is present in the unknown. Part B Procedure Chloride Test Sulfate Test Carbonate Test Anion Tested ClSO42CO32Observations White precipitate formed White precipitate formed Gas bubbles formed Observations for Unknown White precipitate formed No observation No observation Cation Tested Na+ K+ Ca2+ Ca2+ NH4+ Observations for Unknown

No observation No observation Red litmus paper remains red Solution turns deep red color

1. Cl- is present in the unknown.

Part C
1. Cation: Fe3+

Name: iron(III) ion Name: chloride ion Name of unknown salt: Iron(III) chloride

Anion: Cl-

2. Formula of unknown salt: FeCl3

Conclusion: The unknown solution is FeCl3 solution. Discussion: Part A: During the flame test, the observation for unknown is not the same as either observations for Na+, K+ or Ca+. Thus it proves that the unknown does not contain Na+, K+ or Ca+. The unknown does not contain Ca2+ because there is no white precipitate (CaC2O4) formed after the oxalate test. The unknown also does not contain NH4+ because after the ammonium test, there is no smell of ammonia produced and the red litmus paper does not change its color. Fe2+ is present in the unknown because the solution turns deep red color after the iron test.

Part B: The unknown contains Cl- ions. White precipitate (AgCl) is formed in the unknown after the chloride test. The unknown does not contain SO42- because there is no white precipitate (BaCO3) formed after the sulfate test. CO32- is also not present in the unknown because there is no gas bubbles formed during the carbonate test. Questions: 1. Flame test
2. Fe3+ 3. a) Cl-

b) CO32c) K+ d) SO42-
