HPMD Expands Digital Signal Controller Portfolio for Digital Power

Eight New dsPIC DSCs Support Complex Digital Power Applications; Add More Memory, More PWM Channels and CAN HPMD has expanded its portfolio of 16-bit dsPIC Digital Signal Controller (DSC) portfolio for digital power-conversion applications. These new DSCs provide up to four times the memory, compared to Microchips existing SMPS & Digital Power Conversion families. Additionally, these flexible DSCs can be configured for a variety of topologies, giving powersupply designers the complete freedom to optimize for specific product applications. The eight

new DSCs offer up to 18 channels of Pulse-Width-Modulators (PWMs) with 1 nanosecond resolution, enabling an unprecedented number of completely independent digital control loops. The eight new dsPIC33F GS series digital-power DSCs enable digital control loops with 12 to 18 high-speed, 1 nanosecond (ns) resolution PWMs and one or two 10-bit, on-chip ADCs, providing 2 to 4 Million samples per second (MSPS) for low latency and high-resolution control. They range from 64 to 100 pins and 32 to 64 KB Flash memory. These DSCs feature interactive peripherals that both minimize the intervention of the processor and are able to handle the realtime needs of high-speed current-mode control.

16-bit High Temp Devices

Microchip Technology Inc., announced it has the industrys broadest portfolio of semiconductors specified for operation up to 150 C ambientincluding 8- and 16-bit PIC microcontrollers (MCUs) and dsPIC Digital Signal Controllers (DSCs); serial EEPROM devices, and analog products. Qualified and tested in accordance with AEC-Q100 Grade 0 requirements, the devices are optimum for under-the-hood automotive applications; extreme-environment industrial applications, such as down-hole oil drilling and lighting; and for medical applications such as devices that are sterilized in autoclaves. Engineers can now add intelligence directly into hightemperature applications, where the silicon can be mounted directly onto high-temperature assemblies. This enables new applications for electronics that were not possible before. Microchips 16-bit high-temperature portfolio includes: 20 new 16-bit devices with industry-leading MCU performance, including o dsPIC33FJ motor-control and general-purpose devices with integrated digital signal processing, CAN connectivity and 12-bit Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs) o PIC24HJ general-purpose MCUs with CAN connectivity and 12-bit ADCs 16-bit Devices can be found at:
http://www.microchip.com/stellent/idcplg?IdcService=SS_GET_PAGE&nodeId=2844&param=en544822

Applications The ability to mount silicon directly onto high-temperature assemblies means that Brushless DC (BLDC) motors can be used in place of mechanical, belt-driven actuators for water pumps, engine cooling fans, turbocharger waste gates, and throttle-control applications. This improves fuel efficiency and reduces emissions by enabling intelligent use of more efficient, on-demand technology. Sensors can now be placed directly into automotive gearboxes, engine-coolant systems and oil reservoirs. MCUs featuring CAN and LIN connectivity enable small footprints and efficient bus connections. The elimination of heat shields and extra wiring saves cost and complexity for industrial and automotive applications. Additionally, active electronics can be mounted onto sterile medical instruments and function during the autoclave sterilization process.

Interleaved Power Factor Correction

Abstract This Web Seminar will discuss the Interleaved Power Factor Correction (IPFC) reference design. This reference design provides an easy method to evaluate the power, and features of SMPS dsPIC Digital Signal Controllers for an IPFC application.

Switch Mode Power Supply Topologies - the Forward Converter

Abstract This web seminar introduces to the analysis and design of the forward converter, which is a transformer-isolated converter, based on the basic buck converter. The operations of the converter are analyzed with some detail, with special care dedicated to voltage and current that each component is required to withstand. This leads to the equations that can be used to design the converter based on specific requirements.

Sensorless BLDC motor control using a Majority Function

Abstract This web seminar explains a sensorless Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) motor control algorithm, implemented using the dsPIC digital signal controller (DSC). The algorithm works by the use of a majority function for digitally filtering the backElectromotive Force (BEMF). Each phase of the motor is filtered to determine when to commutate the motor drive voltages. This control technique excludes the need for discrete, low-pass filtering hardware and off-chip comparators.

Sensorless Field Oriented (FOC) Control for AC Induction Motors

Abstract This seminar will discuss the basic characteristics of an AC Induction Motor and the fundamentals of using Field Oriented Control (FOC) of this type of motor.
