Lab 9 Clipper-Clamper Circuits

Reading:

Bogart, Beasley, & Rico, Electronic Devices and Circuits, Sections 12-5 & 12-6.

Objectives:

After completing this experiment, you will be able to: 1. Demonstrate diode clipping and clamping circuits.

Discussion:

Clipping and clamping circuits are circuits that shape or modify an ac waveform. Diode clipper circuits are also called limiters. They limit or clip off the positive (or negative) part of an input signal. Diode clampers add a dc level to an ac signal and are sometimes known as dc restorers.

Procedure:

Diode Clipping

1. Measure and record the resistance of the resistors for the circuit in Figure 1.

2. Construct the circuit of Figure 1. Set vS to 5 Vp-p at 1 kHz. Connect channel 2 to the ac voltage supply. Observe both vS and vL on the oscilloscope and describe the similarities and differences between the two. Print out the oscilloscope display and include it with your report.

3.

Add a variable dc voltage supply as shown in Figure 2 to the circuit of Figure 1. Leave vS set as in step 2. Adjust VBB to two different values. For both settings of VBB, observe both vS and vL on the oscilloscope and describe the similarities and differences between the two. Also compare vL in this step with that in the previous

step. Print out the oscilloscope displays and include them with your report.

Diode Clamping

4.

Measure and record the resistance of the resistor for the circuit in Figure 3.

5.

Contruct the circuit of Figure 3. Connect channel 2 to the ac voltage supply. Observe both vS and vL on the oscilloscope and describe the similarities and differences between the two. Print out the oscilloscope display and include it with your report.

6. Your lab report is due at the end of the period.
