Revolution 909 (1998) Daft Punk Electronic duo Daft Punk are one of the most influential groups

s of their genre and are known worldwide. Their album Homework (expressed the groups will to break into a new genre setting them aside from the Big Beat culture in the UK and the well-established house movement of Detroit and Chicago. Revolution 909 was created along with a music video by renowned director Roman Coppola to highlight the revolution (no pun intended) in youth culture and the authoritys crackdown on the national rave scene. In France they think techno and house is devil music with drugs, he explains. Hopefully, if the music stands, itll show the music isnt linked to drugs. Its becoming very big and we have the power to change things a little bit. Daft punk: The Beginning By Alexis Petridis Mixmag Firstly distinguish that although the subject matter is quite obscure It does confine itself to quite a few electronic music video conventions looking at other electronic music videos of the time and genre. The video starts with POV & handheld video shots showing youths lining up and enjoying an underground rave. This technique has been extremely popular in the genre and more so now than now giving the We media prosumer illusion of interpretation. Naturalistic moving camera style integrates and engages the audience into the on-screen situation drawing Daft Punks brand association with the experience of rave culture and representing it from the beginning of the video. This technique also translates in the Acoustic space (Goodwin - 1992) whereby images are synchronized with the building beat of the music but with more emphasis on nondiegetic sound. The video clearly links to Andrew Goodwins theories on Making Cuts through their syncopation with the upbeat snare drum to in his words emphasize the syncopated nature of music. This is a common amongst the genre especially used to reflect the fast pace of high BPM dance music. A filter is added to the track to give to sense that the audience is a participant in the rave working their way in like many of the other participants are shown to be doing (i). On the other hand; what is unconventional within the music video? Before the forging of Daft Punks brand identity with the pop centric release of One More Time (2000) and the consequential album Discovery (2001) Daft Punk reflected their grungy underground roots through timbre denoting: dark colour palette, bright lights, and crowded screen presence. Homeworks following track Da Funk promotes synergy with exactly the same visual features so much so you could almost play them back to back (Shown Below). However the thing that sets Revolution 909 apart is director Roman Coppolas influence on the video explained by the man himself: GQ.com: How many times did you actually cook the Daft Punk recipe? Roman Coppola: Well, that's a family recipe so it is something which has been around for years. I've made it plenty of times but what's fun is when I meet people who are familiar with the video and have made it - that's very satisfying.

(Sons Lunchbox) 2:37 After the songs introduction the visuals break into an objective exploration of the production of tomatoes and becomes more of a documentary of their production. The video itself through this has become renowned for the dubbed Daft Punk recipe which is made during the video featuring easy to follow subtitled instructions resembling the family recipe of Coppola himself. Coppola plays on two very interesting ideas with this concept. Having an Italian ancestry, this reflecting on the presentation of the Police officer coming from a similar background. This is portrayed through adoption of traditional Italian values often stereotyped throughout various media. The mother who cooks traditional Italian cooking for her son with comfort and pride and is a trait commonly associated with Italian Americans. This sense of pride is reflected in the Italian American Officers in HBOs critically acclaimed Crime/Drama Blue Blood (2009) and the love for Italian for is a well-established convention obvious in The Sopranos, even the Simpsons. I believe Coppola does this as homage to Italian Americans and their role in American society, and in this case enforcing the law within society. Furthermore the character could be a form of intertextuality to the many Italian American pieces created by his father and pioneer in the art of movie-making; Francis Ford Coppola. Heavy symbolism is used throughout the video through the visual metaphor of the growing plant. The Plant shown from is in the stages of photosynthesis represent to growth of House music eventually finding its way into the home and stained onto authority as shown through the Policemans stained shirt. This is a clear attack on the governments approach of oppressing a movement that is stained into society. Alternative interpretation that with aid the argument of societys acceptance of House music included that the tomato was selectively chosen by the Grandmother conventionally whose age often is conveyed in the mass media to imply wisdom. Finally the Music (tomato) is a product of a natural cycle and process therefore the intervention of authority in this natural process could be seen as unnecessary and unnatural.

(After Police arrive)

(Before Police arrive)

(Female Youth looking up at Policeman) 0:50

(Policeman looking down at youth) 0:52 Another thing that is clear throughout the video in the negative representation of authority. Using Levi Stratuss theory of Binary Opposites Authority and youth are shown to be protagonists preyed on by authority. Through the use of cinematography and camera techniques of Low angle shots that convey a sense of intimidation by the police officer and high angle emphasises the innocence of youth. The idea of Peace and Terror are present as before police intervention the scene is calm and youths are seen enjoying themselves. However when the agents of disruption (Todorov) are present the scene descends into chaos with use of non-diegetic sound in the form on people screaming inciting the feeling of terror and linking it to RSAs. In short Copola conveys the police as a sheer contradiction of their mainstream accepted role as peacekeepers and portrays the opposite causing panic indicated by the frenzied camera shots, fast pace of the cuts, and used of Diagetic

SFX of screaming and sirens to exaggerate to element and tone of disorder present within the scene. The video also givens the sense of rejection of a patriarchal society as all members of authority within the video are seen to be male. The fact that to protagonist is played by a young female who is shown to be standing up against the police officer enforces this idea of females standing up against a mans world. Otherin interesting final point in relation to Andrew Goodwins Star Theory is the presence of Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo as a cameo within the video, Guy Christo being one half of Daft punk. This is very much a convention within the Electronic music video whereby the artist also features within the video. Other examples of this are found in (i) during the end scene. The use of a cameo gives the viewer who has a certain level of knowledge of the artist a sense of user gratification on discovering the cameo knowing that they have recognized something that 99.9% of the general viewers would now have picked up. Cameos like this are like easter eggs and encourage the viewer to engage more with related brand/ media products in search of the same gratifications Overall Coppola & Daft Punk use the video to make a statement against the handling of the rise of rave culture in France by addressing authority as a mercy-less and intimidating figure. However shows the flexibility of the movement to adapt and escape their oppression (shown through the protagonists escape).
