5 reasons to travel by train

Travelling by train is a unique experience, be it for the thrill of high speed, the comfort, the scenery or the attractive prices. If you have not yet decided how to travel, we have put together 5 compelling reasons to choose the train on your next trip.
1

City centre to city centre

Most major train stations are located in the heart of the cities and benet from excellent connections with other public transportation such as the underground, taxis, and busses. When travelling by train, you will avoid transfers, endless queues at crowded airports or the stress of driving in a different country. Reach your destination refreshed and relaxed.

Unique experience
From high speed trains offering an efcient and rapid connection between two cities to luxurious trains or panoramic trains offering spectacular scenery, a train ride can be a destination in itself. The train is also a very popular mode of transport. Its an opportunity to meet the locals, learn more about their country and get tips on the best secret destinations.

Save money
Whether you go for a Pass or a Point to Point ticket, you can always benet from attractive prices. Tickets can be very affordable when booked in advance and Passes not only offer discounts but also give access to bonuses. Optimise your budget with night trains, saving on hotel accommodation.

Comfort
Whether it is for long or short journeys, comfort is always appreciated. Onboard, you will nd spacious carriages with large seats and space for luggage. You can easily walk around onboard or socialise at the bar-buffet car. While 2nd Class offers good value for money, 1st Class can be very affordable, so dont hesitate to upgrade! 5

Be green
Think about making that trip a little greener by travelling by train. Well-established high speed rail systems operate in a more environmentally friendly way than any other means of transport.

The onboard experience

Choose from a wide range of trains including High Speed day trains running up to 320 km/h. Scenic trains offering incredible vistas or authentic hotels on wheels to enjoy the ease, comfort and freedom of train travel.
Patrick Curtet Pa ri C tet ri

Day trains
Most day trains offer 1st and 2nd Class seating. If you like to be pampered, upgrade to 1st Class, with larger seats, generous legroom and on some routes, additional services such as a complimentary meal, free wireless connection and attentive staff. As opposed to air travel, 1st Class prices for trains can be very affordable, especially if you book in advance. High speed trains have revolutionised travel within Europe, making cities more accessible. Enjoy the thrill of high speed, in great comfort, onboard the most popular High Speed trains like TGV, Eurostar, Thalys, ICE, AVE, and FrecciaRossa. In Japan, the High Speed Shinkansen offers a similar thrill. Regional trains connect main cities to the beautiful and peaceful countryside. Choose from a large range of destinations and schedules. Scenic trains run through spectacular areas, where nature is at its best. The most famous scenic trains are in Switzerland. Discover the Alps on the Glacier Express, the GoldenPass Line or the famous UNESCO World heritage listed Bernina Express.

Night trains
On long routes (more than 6 hours), night trains are a smart travel option. You optimise your time and save on hotel accommodation. Onboard attendants ensure safe and stress-free journeys. Night trains are available on many routes and offer different levels of comfort: Sleepers are private compartments for 1 to 3 travellers offering comfort, privacy and additional services. Breakfast is usually included in the price of the ticket. Couchettes are compartments with 4 to 6 berths, ideal for groups of friends, families or for those who want to socialise. Reclining seats are available on some overnight trains. This is the best option if you want to travel in basic comfort on a budget.

Rail Tours / Luxury trains

These trains offer a travel experience in unprecedented splendour and comfort. Journeys last a few days during which you will enjoy exclusive accommodation, delicious food and attentive staff. Experience the sheer beauty of Canadian landscapes and wildlife onboard the Rocky Mountaineer or VIA Rails Canadian. Travel Australia in comfort on The Ghan, The Indian Pacic or The Overland, some of the greatest train journeys of the world.

GENERAL INFORMATION

What is a Pass?
A Rail Pass allows you to travel unlimitedly on the rail network(s) of the country(ies) covered. This is the best value for money if your itinerary includes 3 journeys or more. There is a large choice of Passes: from the Eurail Global Pass to Passes covering only one country. It offers more flexibility, you choose when you travel within a limited period of time. Discounts offered: Children, Youths, Seniors and Saver (see conditions p.5). You benefit from reduced fares on trains requiring compulsory reservations known as Passholder fares.

What is a Point to Point ticket?

Point to Point tickets are valid on a specific route, between 2 cities. If you have only a few trips in mind, then it is recommended to go for Point to Point tickets rather than a Pass. Depending on the routes and the trains, you will be offered Open tickets or Global fare tickets: Open tickets allow you to travel on a given route at a fixed price within a limited period of time. No specific travel time is mentioned on the ticket and no seat is guaranteed. Global fares are tickets allowing you to travel onboard most high speed and night trains. Travel must take place on the train indicated on the ticket and includes a seat reservation. There is a wide range of fares and you can benefit from up to 60% discount when booking in advance.

What is a reservation?
A reservation guarantees a seat/berth onboard the train. Seat/berth reservations are mandatory on high speed, scenic and night trains. It is included in a Global fare ticket and generally a dedicated seat number is printed on the ticket. It must be booked separately when travelling with an Open ticket or a Pass. On specic trains, the reservation is known as a Passholder fare if you hold a Pass.

Rail Tours & Packages

Rail Tours and Packages offer a unique travel experience, way beyond simple transportation. With Rail Tours, your trip, in total comfort, through fantastic landscapes is complemented by attentive onboard staff. Packages are ready-made itineraries including travel and accommodation. The most famous packages are the Swiss packages and Rocky Mountaineer.

Good to know
What is the difference between 1st and 2nd Class?
Rail travel offers comfortable accommodation/ seating usually classied as 1st or 2nd Class. Both classes offer spacious and comfortable seats with legroom but if you want to indulge yourself with extra comfort, complimentary meals (on some routes) or extra services, upgrade to 1st Class. You will be surprised to see how affordable it is, especially compared to air travel.

What are Continuous or Flexi Passes?

When you select your Pass, you can usually choose between Continuous Passes, to travel every day during the validity of your Pass, or Flexi Passes, to travel on the dates of your choice within a limited period of time. Flexible travel days may be used consecutively or non-consecutively, provided they are used within the validity of the Pass.

Are there discounts for Children, Youths or Seniors?

Eurostar E star st

-4

Paper tickets or e-tickets?

Paper: your Pass or Point to Point ticket is handed to you by your travel agent or sent to you by courier before you leave your country of residence. Your paper ticket has a monetary value. E-ticket: your tickets can either be collected at the station or received by email: Print @ the Station: a reference code is sent to you and you need to collect your ticket(s) at a ticket vending machine before boarding the train. There is no risk of losing your tickets before travelling. Print @ Home: your ticket is sent by email and must simply be printed on any printer before you take the train. Once printed, your rail ticket is valid to travel.

4/11

Children, usually between 4 and 11 years old, pay half the adult fare. Under 4 years of age, they travel for free unless a reservation for a separate seat/berth is required. To qualify for a Youth discount of up to 50%, travellers must be aged between 12 and 25. With a few exceptions, Youth Passes are available in 2nd Class and travellers can also benet from good deals on the main Point to Point tickets. Travellers aged 60 years and over are considered as Seniors and can also benet from special discounts on some Passes and Point to Point tickets.

IMPORTANT: age limits vary according to the product or the country

travelled so check the age limits before booking.

What are Saver, Twin, Party?

When 2 people or more travel together with a Pass, they are entitled to a discount of around 15% off the regular price. Depending on the Pass, the rules and names vary: Saver (2 to 5 persons), Twin (2 persons) or Party (3 to 9 persons).
