After having lain dormant for over 400 years, Arenal Volcano erupted violently on July 29, 1968, wreaking havoc on the local population and creating a lava-scape for miles around its base. At the Observatory Lodge, nature is bursting at the seams. Tropical flora and fauna abound about the Arenal lodge, while the majestic volcano and its fiery outbursts reflect off the mirror lake at her feet all this right outside your Arenal hotel room at the Observatory Lodge
The Gardens & Landscape Prior to the 1968 eruption, Arenal Volcano was a nearly perfect cone-shaped, rainforest blanketed volcanic mountain with minor fumarole activity. Local residents had named it variously: Arenal Peak, Pan de Azcar (Sugarloaf), Canasta Volcano, and Ro Fro Volcano. The area around Arenal Volcano has been home to indigenous populations for thousands of years. Over this time, these residents have weathered scores of periods of intense volcanic activity. In Costa Rica, volcanoes are a natural part of the landscape, contributing to the areas history and folklore, The Guatuso Indians, for example, believed the volcano was home to the God of Fire.
Status of Arenal Volcano, which lay dormant for centuries, erupted in 1968 and has been active but in the
last months the Arenal volcano is in a passive phase with very little activity as a part of its natural evolution. Arenal Observatory Lodge was originally built in 1987 as a Smithsonian Institute scientific research station. Unlike other La Fortuna hotels, this volcano lodge is the only Arenal Volcano observatory situated within Arenal National Park, protected from danger by the deep gorge of the Agua Caliente River.
