ABOUT KSMA

The Kyrgyz State Medical Institute was opened on the 1st September 1939 in city of Bishkek (formerly Frunze) with recruitment of 200 students. The establishment of the Institute was invaluably contributed to by the 1-st Moscow Medical Institute, high medical schools of Saint-Petersburg, Alma-ata, Tashkent and other medical institutions as well. They provided expertise and organizational assistance, medical guidelines and training books as well as faculty staff to do a full-time job for the Institute. Departments of CPSU (Communist Party of the Soviet Union) history and political economy, regular anatomy, biology, histology, general chemistry, physics, foreign languages and others were opened. 16 teachers worked at these departments. The 2-nd Kharkov General Medicine and Dentistry institute and the Moscow Dentistry Institute were evacuated to Kyrgyzstan during the Great Patriotic War (World War II), which caused hardships in the Institutes performance. Terms of training were shortened to 44,5 years. However by 1943 the Kyrgyz State Medical Institute (KSMI) had produced the first 250 doctors. In the post-war years starting from 1948 terms of training were extended to 6 - years. In the following 2nd year of studies the KSMI launched official end-of-year examinations on anatomy, histology, physiology and biochemistry. In 1950ies the Institute increased admission of students and started training of doctors in specific areas of specialization. In 60ies the Institute started a programmed control of proficiency with technical means employed. This period had seen the development of scientific back-ups for gaining expertise in disciplines such as elements of training, levels of their mastering, graphology structures etc. In 70ies the Institute became the leading medical school of the USSR in effective solution of issues as physiology, pathology, adaptation of human organism to high altitude conditions. Qualitatively new way was paved for establishment of links with research centers of the Soviet Republics resulting in conclusion of agreements on creative cooperation with many research institutes and HIGH SCHOOLS of the former Soviet Union. Scientists of our Institute conducted a number of joint research missions at republican research performance sites and laboratories.

In 80th educational-methodical and research process was considerably improved. The Kyrgyz State Medical Institute entered the world scientific community bringing up research issues relative to medicine in mountains, which moved KSMI toward strengthening of integration into research environment. In connection to structural changes in 1996 the Institute was reorganized by the decree of President of Kyrgyz Republic to become the Kyrgyz State Medical Academy. The administration took measures to ensure Academy's transition into market economy reflecting in a contractual system of training. At that, modernization of educational-methodical and research process have been under way. In 2000 the KSMA started introduction of new curricula designed in line with international standards.

National Flag of Kyrgyzstan

National Emblem of Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan (officially the Kyrgyz Republic) is a country in Central Asia. Landlocked and mountainous, it is bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west, Tajikistan to the southwest and China to the east. The ethnonym "Kyrgyz", after which the country is named, is thought to originally mean either "forty girls" or "forty tribes", presumably referring to the epic hero Manas who, as legend has it, unified forty tribes against the Khitans. The 40-ray sun on the flag of Kyrgyzstan symbolizes the forty tribes of Manas. Name: Kyrgyz Republic, Kyrgyzstan Geographic coordinates: 41 00 N, 75 00 E Area: 198,500 sq km (76,640 sq miles).

CLIMATE
The country's climate is influenced chiefly by the mountains, Kyrgyzstan's position near the middle of the Eurasian landmass, and the absence of any body of water large enough to influence weather patterns. Those factors create a distinctly continental climate that has significant local variations. Although the mountains tend to collect clouds and block sunlight (reducing some narrow valleys at certain times of year to no more than three or four hours of sunlight per day), the country is generally sunny, receiving as much as 2,900 hours of sunlight per year in some areas. The same conditions also affect temperatures, which can vary significantly from place to place. In January the warmest average temperature (- 4 C / 24.8 F) occurs around the southern city of Osh, and around Issyk-Kul. The latter, which has a volume of 1,738 cubic kilometers (417 cu mi), does not freeze in winter. Indeed, its name means "hot lake" in Kyrgyz. The coldest temperatures are in mountain valleys. There, readings can fall to - 30 C (- 22.0 F) or lower; the record is - 53.6 C (- 64 F). The average temperature for July similarly varies from 27 C (80.6 F) in the Fergana Valley, where the record high is 44 C (111 F), to a low of -10 C (14.0 F) on the highest mountain peaks. Precipitation varies from 2,000 millimeters (78.7 in) per year in the mountains above the Fergana Valley to less than 100 millimeters (3.9 in) per year on the west bank of Issyk-Kul.

Geography | Map of Kyrgyzstan | Bishkek city | Kyrgyzstan is a landlocked nation in Central Asia, west of the People's Republic of China. Less than a seventh the size of Mongolia, at 199,951 square kilometers,[1] Kyrgyzstan is one of the smaller Central Asian states. The national territory extends about 900 kilometers from east to west and 410 kilometers from north to south. Kyrgyzstan is bordered on the east and southeast by China, on the north by Kazakhstan, on the west by Uzbekistan and on the south by Tajikistan. The borders with Uzbekistan and Tadjikistan in the Ferghana valley are rather difficult. One consequence of the Stalinist division of Central Asia into five republics is that many ethnic Kyrgyz do not live in Kyrgyzstan. Three enclaves, legally part of the territory of Kyrgyzstan but geographically removed by several kilometers, have been established, two in Uzbekistan and one in Tajikistan. The terrain of Kyrgyzstan is dominated by the Tian Shan and Pamir mountain systems, which together occupy about 65 % of the national territory. The Alay range portion of the Tian Shan system dominates the southwestern crescent of the country, and, to the east, the main Tian Shan range runs along the boundary between southern Kyrgyzstan and China before extending farther east into China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Kyrgyzstan's average elevation is 2,750 meters, ranging from 7,439 meters at Peak Jengish Chokusu to 394 meters in the Fergana Valley near Osh. Almost 90 % of the country lies more than 1,500 meters above sea level. Bishkek, formerly Pishpek and Frunze, is the capital and the largest city of Kyrgyzstan. Bishkek is also the administrative centre of Chuy Province which surrounds the city, even though the city itself is not part of the province but rather a province-level unit of Kyrgyzstan.

The name is thought to derive from a Kyrgyz word for a churn used to make fermented mare's milk (kumis), the Kyrgyz national drink. Founded in 1825 as the Kyrgyz-Khokand fortress of "Bishkek", then, in 1862, named as the Russian fortress Pishpek, in 1926 the city was renamed Frunze, after the

Bolshevik military leader Mikhail Frunze. In 1991, the Kyrgyz parliament restored the city's historical name. Bishkek is situated at about 800 metres (2,600 ft) altitude just off the northern fringe of the Kyrgyz AlaToo range, an extension of the Tian Shan mountain range, which rises up to 4,855 metres (15,928 ft) and provides a spectacular backdrop to the city. North of the city, a fertile and gently undulating steppe extends far north into neighboring Kazakhstan. The Chui River drains most of the area. Bishkek is connected to the Turkestan-Siberia Railway by a spur line.

Bishkek is a city of wide boulevards and marble-faced public buildings combined with numerous Soviet-style apartment blocks surrounding interior courtyards and, especially outside the city centre, thousands of smaller privately built houses. It is laid out on a grid pattern, with most streets flanked on both sides by narrow irrigation channels that water the innumerable trees which provide shade in the hot summers.

City centre
State Historical Museum, located in Ala-Too Square, the main city square State Museum of Applied Arts, containing examples of Kyrgyz traditional handicrafts Frunze House Museum Statue of Ivan Panfilov stands in the park near the White House. An equestrian statue of Mikhail Frunze still stands in a large park (Boulevard Erkindik) across from the train station. The train station itself was built in 1946 by German prisoners of war and has survived since then without further renovation or repairs; most of those who built it perished and were buried in unmarked pits near the station. The main government building, the White House, is a huge, seven story marble block and the former headquarters of the Communist Party of the Kirghiz SSR At Ala-Too Square, there is an Independence monument where the changing of the guards may be watched. Osh bazaar, west of the downtown area, is a large, picturesque produce market

Climate
Bishkek has a continental, semi-arid climate averaging 322 clear days annually due to its mountainous location. Average precipitation is 380 millimetres (15 in) per year. Average daily temperatures range from - 3C (26.6 F) in January to about 24.7 C (76.5 F) during July. The summer months are dominated by dry periods experiencing the occasional thunderstorm which produces strong gusty winds and rare dust storms. The mountains to the south provide a natural boundary to provide protection from much of the damaging weather along with the smaller chain which runs NW to SE. In the winter months, sparse snow storms and frequent heavy fog are the dominating features. When an inversion sets up, the fog can last for days at a time.

Air Quality
Emissions of air pollutants in Bishkek amounted to 21.9 thousand tons in 2008. Of all other cities of Kyrgyzstan, the level of air pollution in Bishkek is the highest with occasional exceeding maximum allowable concentrations by several times, especially in the city's center. Responsibility for ambient air quality monitoring in Bishkek lies on Kyrgyz State Agency on

Hydrometeorology. In total, there are 7 air quality monitoring stations in Bishkek, measuring levels of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, formaldehyde, and ammonia.

Mass public transport

There is public transportation available, including buses, electric trolley buses, and public vans (known in Russian as marshrutka). Taxi cabs can be found throughout the city. There is no subway in Bishkek, but the city is considering designing and building a light rail system.
