Lesson Instruction: -Power point/Note taking Practice -Get students engaged by challenging them to fill out the note taking sheet regarding the Ancient Greek topics that will be discussed in the power point as the lesson goes along. -Begin with the discussion of famous Ancient Greek philosophers. -Cover key characteristics of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. -Relate each famous philosopher and their origin to the Ancient Greek city-states cooperating teacher discussed the week prior. -Shift focus to architecture of Ancient Greece. -Begin with importance of Acropolis and Parthenon. -Show illustrations of some types of architecture within Ancient Greece and what remains in present day. -Progress to describing the 3 types of columns Ancient Greece is credited with creating as well as breaking them down into parts (capital, shaft, base). -Relate specific parts of column structure to human body structure for clarity. -Capture attention of the students by demonstrating the multitude of ways the architecture is reflected within modern buildings. -Include examples from Soldier Field, Davenport Hall, and Capitol Building. -Ask students to use new knowledge to distinguish column types. Then proceed to give them the option to see if they recognize structure from sections of the building provided in the picture. -Finish with quick review of material learned using class clickers in which each student would buzz into computer system with their individual answers to the following questions: -i.e.: The top of a Greek column is called -i.e.: The three styles of Greek columns are Doric, Ionic, and

Assessments/Checks for Understanding: -Ancient Greek Column Challenge -Students will be broken into groups based on seating arrangements to complete the Ancient Greek Column Challenge. -On their own individual sheets, yet within their groups, students will be expected to complete a worksheet to demonstrate their comprehension of the differences between the columns described within the power point presentation. -Worksheet within the groups will provide illustrations of modern day structures that reflect the contributions made by the Ancient Greeks. -Students will write down the name of the column type being used. -Time permitting, we will discuss answers as a class. If not completed, questions become homework for the groups that do not finish. Closure/Wrap-Up/Review: -Recap what was discussed throughout the lesson. -Reiterate the importance of the Greek philosophers on present day knowledge. -Sum up how relevant the contributions of Ancient Greece are within society today, particularly the architectural style. -Ask students if they have any questions or need clarification on anything. -Restate that any unfinished portions of the worksheet become homework due the next day. Self-Assessment: -Analyze personal connection with students due to their behavior, attentiveness, and responses throughout the class period. (In particular, check their progress over note taking activity). -Use class clicker results to presented questions as a comprehension check for understood material and what might still need to be addressed. -After the lesson, discuss how the lesson went with Mr. Risley (cooperating teacher) based off of the rubric provided by the Office of Clinical Experiences. -Realize that the lesson lacks cultural diversity because it relates to Ancient Greek contributions to the present.
