Constructivism was developed by Jean Piaget in 1930s. Constructivism allows students to construct their knowledge and understanding of the world, through their experiencing and reflecting those experiences. This engages students in active learning. The main five principles of constructivism theories are: 1. Engage 2. Explore 3. Explain 4. Elaborate 5. Evaluate In order to achieve the 5 main principles of constructivism, our team has decided to apply the Needhams Five Phase Model of Constructivism in our teaching and learning activities. This model consists of five phases. The activities and objectives of each of the phases is as below: Phase 1: Orientation The purpose of this stage is to gain and engage students' attention and to motivate them. In this lesson, be begin by showing them the pictures of the obese individuals to gain their attention. Then, we pair the students for a brainstorming session to engage them in learning. Phase 2: Generating Ideas In this phase, students are required to list the causes and the possibilities of obese in the class activity. This will motivate the students to participate actively in the class. Phase 3: Restructuring of Ideas This phase requires learners to analyze the causes of maintaining, losing and gaining weight with the food guide pyramids and the activity. This is to encourage the thinking skills of the learners. Phase 4: Applying the ideas. Students are required to expand or modify previous ideas through investigation, exploration or communication in this phase. Therefore, students will be group into 4-5. Each group will be given a different task. They can explore and investigate their ideas through search engine and collaborate their ideas in wiki. This activity allows
students to collect and summarize information before they interpret their information. They will have the hands-on and minds-on activities that encourage active learning. Phase 5: Reflection This is the final stage of Needham's Five Phases Model. Students are required to present their completed tasks to the class. Then, students will be assigned homework to write a reflection on the class activity and post them in wiki. This allows students to self-assess and questioning on the changes of the ideas made. In this phase, students are required to analyze the causes of maintaining, losing and gaining weight with the food guide pyramids and the activity. This is to encourage the thinking skills of the learners.
Collaborative Tool Our group has chosen Wikispaces as our collaborative tool because it allows students to participate in the process of content management, information sharing, and content creation. Students can create, post, edit, or delete web pages, thus promoting collaboration among the students.
