Resources needed: Laptop Projector Nutrition Labels Nutrition Label Worksheet

Instructional methods: This lesson will begin by recapping what we have learned about nutrition, thus far. We will then go into nutrition labels. I will start by go over what is in a nutrition label and what the contents mean. As a class, we will evaluate a nutrition label, answering all the questions on the worksheet. Once we have completed that, the students will complete the worksheet on their own, with another nutrition label.

Lesson Sequence: Direct Instruction I will begin by recapping what we have learned about healthy and non-healthy food items. The students will provided an entrance slip of what are some healthy and non-healthy food choices and what makes them healthy and non-healthy. I began the lesson by going over what is included in a nutrition label. I went through each element of the label and described what every part was and why it was important. We will discuss the amount of each item in the product, along with the percent daily value. It was also explained that all of this information is based off a 2,000 calorie diet. We will also talk about the ingredients and how to read what is included in the product. It was explained to the students that the first item listed was the largest ingredient included. The students will be able to recognize, from a prior class, if the ingredients are healthy or unhealthy.

Guided Practice After I explained how to read a nutrition label I passed out two of the worksheets, below, to each student. I then put a nutrition label on the Elmo and we went through the worksheet together. By doing this, the students were able to ask questions as we went through the label. o In this class we have one student, in particular, that is very shy. He is extremely intelligent, but just lacks the confidence that he needs to feel comfortable to talk in front of his class. I have begun talking with him before class, informing him that I will be calling on him, but giving him the question I will be asking, a head of time. Over time, he has become more confident and comfortable speaking in front of the class. He has recently begun to answer questions that I dont necessarily prepare him for.

Independent Practice Once we completed the entire worksheet, I knew that the students felt comfortable doing another one on their own. I gave each student their own nutrition label and gave them the rest of class to work on the worksheet. I ensured them that I was available for any questions that they may have but reassured them that they had a firm understand on the material in front of them.

Nutrition Label Facts After reading your nutrition label, you are to input the information below. The last column is for your calculations of 3 servings, instead of one. An example would be: A serving size of Cheerios is 75 calories per serving (1 cup) but you ate 3 cups (3 servings) for breakfast. Really, you ate 225 calories instead of 75 calories. 75x3=225
