"The Deity and Lordship of Jesus Christ" Philippians 2:5-11 1. Jesus is God (v.5-6) -V.

.6) "form of God"- Form means the outward expression of the inward nature -the word of God teaches us that Jesus is God himself, in human flesh. -the Bible teaches that there are 3 persons in the Godhead: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; all are co-equal and the same God. Jesus is co-equal with God and is the 2nd person of the trinity. -Jesus is referred to as "Son of God" and "Son of Man" in scripture. -What is the difference? -Jesus is both fully God- Luke 4:41/Fully human- Matt: 16:13,16 Do we really believe Jesus is God? What if he wasn't fully God? -If jesus wasn't God, if He were just a mere man, we would be left with a set of nice teachings rather than a relationship with the personal God of the universe made possible through Jesus' ultimate sacrifice. 2. Jesus is Savior (v.7-8) "Jesus is the eternal Son of God who voluntarily became man to redeem lost humanity." V.7) "made himself nothing"- doesn't take away from His deity or who He is, but He took on the role of a servant. -Mark 10:45 V.8)- What does it mean that he humbled Himself? - He humbled himself 1st by coming as a man in external form, 2nd by becoming obedient, to death on the cross. -the reason God came to earth as man, to be Jesus is because we needed a perfect spotless sacrifice to redeem us from sin once and for all. -2 Cor. 5:21- "God made Him who had no sin, to be sin for us so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." -He had no crime to pay for, He had no sin. He took our sin & died to pay the penalty of those sins for us by shedding His blood. -Jesus also died to reconcile us to God- 1 Peter 3:18- "For Christ

also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that He might bring us to God." 3. Jesus is Lord (v.9-11) V.9) God the Father exalted Him to His rightful place of honor and glory -through the resurrection God gave new honor to the humble son. -His name is above every name. He is exalted to the right hand of the throne of God and is Lord of all. -Because He is Lord, there will be a day when every knee will bow & every tongue confess that He is Lord. -What does it mean for Jesus to be Lord? -He is supreme; He is sovereign & rules over everything; He is master and the only one worthy of worship. -personal experience to illustrate. -When Jesus is Lord of your life, you do everything for Him. You live completely for Him, not for yourself, being completely surrendered to His lead. This is done out of a love for Him. He should be the greatest desire of your life. Application: Do you believe Jesus is God? Do you believe He is Savior? Do you believe He is Lord? If you believe these things, have you completely surrendered and trusted in these truths? Maybe you have never asked yourself these questions, or maybe you need to make a decision about this tonight. Listen to whatever God is speaking to your heart tonight and be obedient to the decision He is leading you to make.
