Nearly 80 million Americans have this debilitating

because it almost killed me.
Dick Bernstein was only 12 years old when he was di
agnosed with Type 1 diabetes, the juvenile (and much le
ss common) form of the disease. And he was absolutely
diligent in following his doctors advice. (After all, his d
octor was the president of the ADA.)
For 20 years, he stuck with the low-fat, high-carbo-h
ydrate diet he was given. But his illness progressed,
stunting his growth and causing painful kidney stones,
frozen shoulders that made [him] cry to put on a shirt,
deformed feet, and neuropathy. When he complained
to his doctor, he was told, Dont worry, it has nothing
to do with you diabetes. Youre doing fine.
But Dick knew he wasnt doing fine. He had to
inject himself with large doses of insulin to compensate
for the high-carb diet. And at only 32 years old, he was
chronically ill and aging prematurely. He didnt think he
would live to see his children grown.
A Pioneering Effort Changes the Face of Diabetes
Then, in October 1969, Dick opened the latest issue o
f the trade journal Lab World and saw an advertise-ment
for a blood-sugar meter. Using a single drop of blood,
the device gave a reading within one minute. It was
intended for medical professionals to determine whether
an unconscious patient was drunk or diabetic.

It weighed 3 pounds and cost $650. Dick tried to
orderone,butitwasonlyavailabletodoctorsandhos

Keep in mind that diabetics did not test their own

But when he tried to discuss this with his doctor, he
was told, Animals arent humans. And besides, its
impossibletonormalizehumanbloodsugars.
Frustrated,butnotdeterred,Dickwentforwardwith
hisplantomonitorhimselfandgethisbloodglucose
tonormallevels.Applyinghisowntechniquesforus
ingdiettocontrolandreversediabetes,hishealthbe
gan to improve dramatically. He knew he was on to

Excited, Dick wrote articles about his techniques
and submitted them to one medical journal after an

Soin1979,attheageof45,hegaveuphisjobasan
engineer and enrolled in medical school. He fgured

Dr.Bernsteinwasnowincontrolofhisbloodsug
arandhealthierthanhehadbeeninyears.Andhehad
