Higher education encompasses a diverse range of courses and qualifications such as masters and Honours degrees, foundation degrees, higher national diplomas and certificates.
The term higher education includes all university-level education at Level 4 or above and involves studying for a degree or similar advanced qualification. All courses at Level 3 or below are classed as further education. Higher education is open to learners usually aged over 18 there is no upper age limit! Is essential for some careers, including chartered engineering and architecture. Will bring together students from a variety of backgrounds. This interaction can enrich the learning process through sharing experience and knowledge.

Swindon College is one of the largest higher education providers in Wiltshire and has successfully been delivering higher education qualifications in Swindon since 1902
Our courses range from professional qualifications, Higher National Certificates and Diplomas to Foundation Degrees, Honours Degrees and Postgraduate courses. In 2009, the Quality Assurance Agency carried out an Integrated Quality Enhancement Review (IQER) of higher education within Swindon College and the resulting report had an excellent outcome, showing confidence in the colleges academic standards and quality of learning opportunities. The report also noted many areas of good practice. We welcome students from across the country and overseas and our helpful support staff will provide you with information on the local area as well as accommodation available in Swindon. Today, many students also decide to study locally instead of going away to university and a large number of our students come from the local region, enabling them to combine university-level study with work and home commitments. Our campus has a stunning Learning Resource Centre (LRC). The centre is a great environment in which to study and incorporates a library, study centres and a quiet space with gallery. The library houses over 32,000 books as well as journals, newspapers, videos, DVDs and reference materials. Internet access and extensive online research resources are available on all LRC computers. Users with visual impairment and other specific needs will find a range of specialist software and equipment available. WiFi internet connectivity is also available across the campus.

The School of Art offers state-of-the-art workshops and creative suites, as well as a photography studio with darkroom and printmaking facilities. All of our tutors are highly experienced and have relevant industry experience. Wherever possible students work on live projects and there is a high level of employer involvement in the college programmes. We are able to offer the opportunity to study within small groups which allows individual support and leads to high levels of success. On-campus facilities include a large refectory, an express food shop, a professional training restaurant, hairdressing and beauty therapy salons and a sports therapy clinic, all of which are available to students at reduced rates. We are located next door to the Oasis Leisure Centre which offers sports and activities in addition to the colleges own programmes, including a lagoon swimming pool, gym, eight court sports hall, indoor bowling, four outdoor pitches, squash courts and a caf bar, as well as being one of Swindons main concert venues

A steP-By-steP GUiDe to applying through UCAs:
SteP 1 - reseArCH
Make sure that you have carefully researched the courses you want to apply for, so that you know the content matches what you want to learn and that you are likely to have the grades that you need to be considered.
Application
extra
If you have applied through UCAS, used all five choices on your application and dont get any offers, you might be able to apply through Extra for another course. In Extra, you can apply for any course with vacancies. Extra is open between the end of February and the end of June.
SteP 2 - APPLiCAtion
Submit your online application to UCAS, who will acknowledge receipt of it and allow you access to track the progress of your application online. UCAS will send your application to each institution you have applied to.
SteP 4 - interviews
If you are invited to an interview, you will be given plenty of notice. You may be asked to bring any certificates you have mentioned in your application and all art interviews must be supported by a portfolio.
SteP 3 - resPonses
You will receive one of the following responses from each institution you apply to: An invitation to attend an interview A conditional or unconditional offer Notice that your application has been unsuccessful A request to provide an electronic portfolio. Some courses will only make an offer after an interview, some will make offers based on your application. Once you receive your offer(s) you need to choose a Firm offer and an Insurance offer (i.e. a first and second choice). You then need to log in regularly for updates and reply to your offers by the deadline given. Your Insurance choice would normally require a lower UCAS tariff. It is important to respond to your offers by the stated date, otherwise your choices will be cancelled.
SteP 5 stUDent FinAnCe

You will need to apply as early as possible for a Student Loan by going to www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance. See the next section of the prospectus entitled Student Finance Information and Advice for more details.
SteP 6 DsA stAtement

If you have a disability or currently access any form of learning support you will need to apply for a DSA (Disabled Students Allowance) statement, if you do not already have one, before the course starts to gain the maximum benefit. Please see the Learning Support for Students section for more information.
SteP 7 ConDitionAL oFFers

If, for any reason, you do not achieve the grades specified in a conditional offer you have received from us, dont panic! Contact us as soon as possible to discuss your grades and options.
SteP 8 enroLment & inDUCtion

You will be sent enrolment details and tuition fee information in the post. When you enrol please bring your Student Loan letter with you, if you have one, as it will confirm any fees you need to pay. If you have not applied for a student loan, you can choose to pay the lump sum or by instalments if you prefer.

Financial Information for all Higher Education Students
If you are an existing student and have not already applied for your Financial Support Package for 2012, you must do so as soon as possible by contacting your Local Authority. They will be able to give you information about your options. If you are a new student you need to visit the Student Finance government web site: www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance. This web site is also the best source of information for all student finance enquiries. Please contact Student Services for up-to-date tuition fee information on: Freephone 0800 731 2250 or email: studentservices@swindon-college.ac.uk. Full time students If youre studying full time, the main sources of help are: Student loans and grants from the government Bursaries from your university or college. student loans from the government All eligible students can get help with tuition fees and living costs through student loans. youll be able to take out two student loans per academic year: A Tuition Fee Loan - to cover your annual tuition fees in full A Maintenance Loan - to help with accommodation and other living costs (how much you get will depend on your household income). When you are assessed for your fees you are automatically assessed for a Student Loan. If you are paying your own tuition fees, an instalment plan can be arranged by contacting Swindon College Student Finance on Tel: (01793) 498338 or email: studentfinance@swindoncollege.ac.uk. repaying student loans Student loans have to be paid back - but you dont have to start making repayments until youve left your course and are earning over 15,000. Once your earnings reach this threshold, youll pay back nine per cent of whatever you earn over 15,000.

Bursaries & scholarships Bursaries are in addition to student loans and do not have to be repaid. Institutions in England must offer at least a minimum bursary payment if youre paying maximum tuition fees and getting the full Maintenance Grant or Special Support Grant (which all students are eligible to apply for). Universities offer various Scholarships, see the Finance Contacts section below for web site and contact details. extra help Students with child or adult dependants may qualify for an additional grant or allowance. Access to Learning Fund To apply to the Access to Learning Fund you must have applied for your full student loan. You will then be able to apply for help towards additional course-related costs. Any allocation will depend on your income and expenditure. Part time students The main sources of financial help for part time students are usually different from those available to full time students. We have a friendly and highly supportive environment at the College where students benefit from small group sizes and an effective personal tutorial system. All students have access to student email and the colleges Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) where they can liaise with tutors and fellow students, as well as access work and lesson notes remotely.

Therefore, we have created an environment which our HE students can access any time where they can study and socialise with their friends. We want to ensure that our HE students get the best out of their experience of studying at the college. The HE Student Centre has a 42 plasma TV in the chill-out area with comfy sofas and chairs to relax, a seating area for food and drinks with vending machines, internet caf style-area with PCs, plus an adjoining computer suite. The HE Student Centre is in close proximity to our stunning Learning Resource Centre where a wide variety of current publications and media are available throughout the college year to help you with your studies. trips Many of our higher education courses also offer UK and international residential trips as part of the learning experience. Accommodation If you need accommodation during your time at Swindon College, our Student Finance department can offer advice and information. We keep a list of privately-owned accommodation suitable for student occupation. The average price (based on academic year 2009/10) is 60/ week for self-catering and 75/week for half-board. Swindon College does not inspect or specifically endorse any of the properties on the list but all student houses are regularly checked for health & safety standards by Swindon Borough Council and are not included unless they have passed regulation requirements. We do not have college halls of residence but we keep a list of privately-owned accommodation suitable for student occupation. The Graduation Ceremony in October is the highlight of the higher education year when hundreds of our students graduate from the college after successfully completing their programmes of study. The day is formal but enjoyable and students process through the town in gowns and mortar boards to the ceremony in a local church. The event is attended by the Mayor and other local dignitaries and ends with an afternoon of entertainment, food and drink with family, friends and college staff.

Swindons nightlife is diverse and lively with a wide choice of clubs offering a variety of music styles to suit all tastes. There are plenty of bars in the town centre as well as more traditional pubs in the surrounding towns and villages. A vast array of restaurants offer a wealth of menus from many cultures.

The shopping experience is good in Swindon with many leading high street shops in the town centre and at the renowned Designer Outlet Village, as well as at several large out-of-town shopping centres.
Culture
Cultural facilities include a new purpose-built three storey library in the town centre, two multiplex cinemas, the Wyvern Theatre which attracts top national performers, Old Town Arts Centre, Swindon Museum and Gallery, Steam Museum and the National Monuments Record Centre.
sport and Leisure

Swindon has several leisure centres and gyms offering many activities including rock climbing, ten pin bowling and ice skating as well as a professional tennis centre, indoor karting track and golf courses. If you use these facilities regularly, you can apply for a Swindon Card to receive extra discounts. Swindon Town Football Club and Swindon Speedway provide spectator opportunities and you can also watch greyhound racing at the Abbey Stadium.

Park life
You can chill out in one of the many parks and outdoor areas in Swindon including Coate Water Country Park, Lydiard Park, Queens Park and the Old Town Gardens while the more adventurous can visit the nearby Cotswold Water Park for water skiing, wind surfing and jet skiing. For a more cultural experience visit local historic towns such as Cirencester and Marlborough, the World Heritage site at Avebury or the ancient sites at Barbury Castle and Silbury Hill. The Ridgeway, a National Trail described as Britains oldest road, is an 85 mile track which starts close to Swindon and runs along the downs to Buckinghamshire. The trail is popular for hiking, mountain/trail biking and horse riding.

During the Access to HE programme, taster days off campus are organised for the students to give them a taste of what university life is all about. During 2011, students on the Access to Higher Education (Nursing) programme took part in a Health and Social Care taster day at the Great Western Hospital, Swindon. The purpose of the taster day was to give Swindon College Access students information on the range of Health and Social Care professions and courses available and the opportunity to meet current health care practitioners. Five workshops were offered during the day including: Adult nursing, mental health nursing, clinical skills, higher education financial support and a tour of the hospital was provided. Meet Bruno Figueira...

Bruno was always interested in history, illustration and architecture and after leaving school in Portugal completed a degree in Landscape Archaeology. As the market for his skills was limited in Portugal he worked on various projects including illustration, field work and conservation. He then decided to come to Swindon College to specialise in illustration, prompted by a professional colleague who had also studied for her MA at Swindon College and who is well respected within the industry in Portugal. .

Meet Jake Hobday...

Jake left school in Witney and studied the Art & Design National Diploma at Abingdon and Witney College. He specialised in Graphic Design and decided Swindon College offered the best local degree course, which would allow him to commute from home and cut down on living costs as a student. Jake is enjoying the mix of subjects on the course, which includes web design, packaging and photography. He says that staff and his classmates are friendly and supportive and there are good field trips and study breaks, including a week in New York.
I like the class sizes here, which are smaller than at university. It means the lecturers have more time for us individually.

Meet Hayley Hosell...

Hayley left Dorcan Technology College, Swindon and went straight into a successful career in administration. After nine years in this field however, she decided to re-examine her career and realised her true interests were with photography. The HND course offers a good mix of different photography genres which has allowed Hayley to focus her personal interests. She says she now feels she is doing something she feels passionate about and her personality and character is growing. Hayley has applied for a Documentary Photography degree next year which she hopes will lead to a career in the fields of history and anthropology, perhaps alongside part time teaching.

Natasha left Nova Hreod School, Swindon and initially studied Travel and Tourism. After a year she realised that she wanted something more creative, so enrolled on the Media Make-up National Diploma. Natasha has really enjoyed developing her skills and confidence from airbrushing and body painting to sewing and wig making and has already been accepted onto the HND next year. There are lots of trips, exhibitions, competitions and work experience available; this year students did the make-up for the local pantomime then watched their creations come to life on stage. Last year one of the students won the UK Worldskills Final, which was a huge achievement.

The next obvious move for Jagi was the Foundation Degree, as she liked the broad-based subjects the course offers. Jagi is now on the BA top-up year and is still enjoying the subject diversity which includes marketing, customer communications and accounting. Now in her fifth year at Swindon College, Jagi feels she has kept up her future career options open because she hasnt specialised too early.

Zaneta attended business college in Pardubice, Czech Republic for four years before coming to the UK to work as an au pair and study English. She moved from London to Swindon and secured work as an administrator and then in accounting. She now works for the Medical Research Council, who readily agreed to sponsor her Level 4 accountancy study. Zaneta is looking to enrol on an ACCA or CIMA course next, which her employer may also support.

Liam studied Engineering at GCSE level while still at school at The Swindon Academy. He then enrolled on the BTEC National Diploma in Engineering and gained very good grades. Aged 18 he secured an apprenticeship with Schneider Electric and asked them to sponsor his continued studies. They have supported him both on the Foundation Degree and now the BSc top-up year. At the end of his degree he will be a fully qualified Industrial Manufacturing Engineer and says the lecturing team at Swindon College have been consistently brilliant in helping him throughout his six years here.

Meet Luther Hindley...

Based in Andover, Luther originally studied Performing Arts which led to touring with a theatre company for the next few years. Deciding to settle down, Luther then took a job with a local engineering company. He researched local courses and found only Swindon offered all three mechanical, electrical and electronic pathways. After two years studying part time for a BTEC National Certificate and gaining a double Distinction, Luther was accepted onto the Foundation Degree. His employer has been 100% supportive of his study and has already committed to the BSc degree top-up year for Luther to continue working towards Chartered Engineer status.

Ashley left Farmors School in Fairford and studied computing for two years at college. He then worked in a pub for a while before securing a job with Network Rail as a Data Entry Clerk. Enjoying his new role he progressed well and is now an Assistant Commercial Manager working on projects such as station enhancements and signalling. Meet Anna Mumford...

Anna attended Pewsey Vale School and studied Level 2 Beauty Therapy before working on a cosmetic counter in a department store. After some time Anna felt she needed more of a challenging career with long-term prospects. She changed to administration and developed her computing skills before joining the Services Team at Network Rail. She took on a technicians role after completing training and progressed into the Engineering department. A year ago she was promoted to Assistant Engineer and the HNC is a prerequisite for that role. Anna has already opted to continue on the HND next year and is looking to progress soon to full Engineer status.

Ifan studied for A Levels in Cardiff before taking a year out travelling. He then moved to Bath to study Sports Development but wanted to focus specifically on sports injury treatments. He wanted to focus specifically on sports injury treatments and the University of Bath recommended the Sports Therapy course to Ifan. He commutes on the train two days a week. Living in Bath, Ifan gets to make good use of the university facilities at both campuses and staff at Bath and Swindon have been extremely supportive. Ifan feels he has progressed well due to the small class sizes and plans to study for an MA in Sports Rehabilitation next.

Meet Kyle Barnes...

Kyle came straight to college after completing his GCSEs at Wootton Bassett School. He enrolled on the BTEC National Diploma in Sports and Exercise Science (Sports Therapy). Kyle has always had an interest in sport and coaches a cricket and hockey team in his free time and wants to have a career in Sports Therapy. After completing the National Diploma, Kyle enrolled on to the Foundation Degree in Sports Therapy, which he is currently studying now. Kyle is keen to progress on to the one year top-up BSc (Hons) in Sports Therapy.

Meet Michelle Luck...

Michelle left school in London at 16 and gained further qualifications through evening classes. She became interested in a career working with children with learning difficulties and completed an Open University course in the subject. This led to a teaching post where she stayed for 15 years. Needing a change, Michelle relocated to Marlborough and decided to focus on the Key Stage 1 age group. She enrolled at Swindon College and gained her CACHE Level 3 before completing the Foundation Degree. Michelle hopes to move into nursery management, lecturing or may explore an MA in the future.

Meet Iain Mazonowicz...

Iain attended Commonweal School in Swindon before taking A levels at a local college. He then studied Electrical Installation before joining an apprenticeship with Honda. Three years later he took advantage of a voluntary redundancy programme to be able to return to study. He explored his local options and found Swindon College offered the ideal course to fulfil his ambition to become an infant school teacher. Iain works four days a week at a childrens nursery which compliments the course content very well. Along with most of his class, Iain will be progressing on to the BA top-up year to gain his full degree next year.

Meet Tanya Ecclestone...

After leaving Commonweal School in Swindon, Tanya worked in Marketing and Admin, including a role as PA to Director of EMI Music. Tanya then took a career break to raise a family, eventually volunteering at her sons school - an independent prep school near Swindon - which soon became a full TA role. Although used to regular professional training courses, Tanya says the prospect of committing to long-term study was daunting at first but her employer and the college have been very supportive and have made all the difference. Tanya has enrolled on the BA top-up for next year and then plans to train as a Special Educational Needs teacher.

Meet Pedro Ferrao...

Pedro left school in Estoril, Portugal and came to England aged 18. Thirteen years on he still loves the UK and has now found a career he wants to develop. Following redundancy, Pedro was offered a role as a Play Worker for Swindon Borough Council. He also volunteered at a local primary school before finding a permanent position in a local school for children with behavioural issues, which he finds very rewarding. Pedro decided to join the FD to gain a professional qualification and plans to complete the BA top-up year before undergoing teacher training to become a Special Educational Needs specialist.

Meet Chris Harris...

Chris has worked for the RAF for the last 11 years as an Aircraft Engineer. Two years ago the opportunity arose for him to teach students working on Hercules aircraft, which he has enjoyed. Chris then felt he wanted to enhance his teaching skills and gain a professional qualification that will be useful now and later in life. Chris says his employers have been 100% supportive and his work colleagues have noticed the continuing improvement in his teaching standards. Chris has enjoyed studying again and feels it has boosted his self-confidence so much he hopes to continue at degree level.
