Avoiding A Stroke
The two main types of strokes are named for their cause. Fitness/Wellness Director A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel to the brain bursts. An ischemic stroke occurs when one of those blood vessels becomes blocked. Strokes are unpredictable and can be frightening. The good news is that strokes can be prevented, or risks reduced through making the right lifestyle choices. A lifestyle which is considered heart-healthy is one of the steps to avoid a stroke. Other choices may not be as obvious. Lycopene is a valuable anti-oxidant in the fight against strokes. Recent research showed that men with the highest blood levels of lycopene were 55% less likely to have a stroke. Lycopene is what makes foods red and is found in tomatoes and tomato products, watermelon, and pink grapefruit. Cocoa in chocolate contains flavonoids. Flavonoids are antioxidants which fight damage to blood vessels and prevent blood clots leading to stroke. Swedish research found men who ate more chocolate had a 17% lower risk of stroke. Dark chocolate contains more of those valuable flavonoids than milk chocolate. Other sources of flavonoids are green and black teas, blueberries, strawberries and garlic. A healthy mouth means a healthy heart and brain. Recent studies show an association between cardiovascular disease and periodontal disease. Its possible that infected gums and reduced oral care can foster bacteria which invade the coronary arteries (those supplying the heart muscle). This invading bacteria can lead to blocked blood flow through the development of sticky plaques in the arteries. Vigorous exercise lowers risk of stroke and reduces effects of a stroke, if one strikes. Moderate to intense cardiovascular exercise has been shown to lower the risk of a silent stroke. In addition, those who exercise most prior to having a stroke, tend to have less severe strokes and better recovery. Increased blood pressure (the pressure/force flowing blood exerts on the arteries and veins) leads to a higher risk of stroke. Normal/healthy blood pressure is lower than 120 mmHg systolic over 80 mmHg diastolic. Even slightly elevated blood pressure, called prehypertension (defined as 120-139 systolic and 80-89 diastolic), can increase risk of stroke by 55-79%. Blood pressure can be controlled through regular exercise, maintaining recommended body weight, not smoking, and eating healthy (including low sodium). Elevated blood pressure usually has no symptoms. Checking blood pressure regularly is important to help avoid unexpected problems. A stroke can be physically and mentally debilitating. Taking a few simple steps and making healthy lifestyle choices can help reduce stroke risk, or totally prevent a stroke.
