Voorhees Township has adopted the Bor-
ough of Highlands, N.J., in an effort to help
neighbors who were severely impacted by
Superstorm Sandy. We are reaching out
to our residents, community organizations
and places of worship for donations to as-
sist the residents of Highlands.
Highlands is a borough in Monmouth
County with a population of about 5,000.
The eastern part of the town is built on a
high bluff that overlooks Sandy Hook and
the Atlantic Ocean.
On Oct. 29, Superstorm Sandy
slammed into the eastern seaboard of the
United States, making landfall just north of
Atlantic City. Highlands Borough was de-
stroyed when a storm surge of 10 feet
swept in from the bay beginning as early as
Oct. 28. Homes and businesses were severe-
ly damaged or destroyed, including the fa-
mous Bahrs Landing and Lusty Lobster
Fishery.
Almost every home in Highlands suf-
fered severe damage as water levels rose
four to five feet inside, destroying the inte-
riors, electrical and
gas systems and
contents. More
than 1,200 homes
were impacted by
the flooding and
many homeowners
have not yet been
able to repair their
homes or replace
basic items needed
for food prepara-
tion, laundry or
sleeping.
For those wish-
ing to make a cash
donation, please
forward your
check to Hope for
Highlands, a
501(c)(3) non-profit organization devoted to
the relief of the needy and/or displaced
and the general recovery of the town of
Highlands as a result of the devastation
created by Sandy. Hope for Highlands is fo-
cused primarily on assisting with the re-
covery and restoration of the downtown
for its residents, businesses and communi-
ty infrastructure.
Checks can be made payable to HBP-
Hope for Highlands, P.O. Box 375, High-
lands, NJ 07732. For those who wish to do-
nate online, a link to Hope for Highlands
may be found on the homepage of the
Voorhees website, www.voorheesnj.com.
All donations to Hope for Highlands are
tax deductible. Tax ID #22-3665400.
Those who wish to donate items in ac-
cordance with the guidelines set forth
below may bring them to Voorhees Town
Hall at 2400 Voorhees Town Center. Please
drop off your items to Jeanette, Dee, Larry
or Stefanie during normal business hours
of Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5

The Voorhees Sun
The six-foot-one-inch, 185-
pound quarterback for the East-
ern Regional Vikings, Tom Flac-
co, might just follow in his older
brothers footsteps.
In the first round of the 2008
NFL draft, the Baltimore Ravens
selected Joe Flacco as their quar-
terback. The oldest brother of the
Flacco family finished his fifth
season winning a Super Bowl,
and is the Ravens all-time lead-
ing passer in yards (13,816), touch-
down passes (80), completions
(1,190) and attempts (1,958), ac-
cording to the Baltimore Ravens
website.
Unlike Joe, an Audubon High
School alum, Tom went to Cam-
den Catholic High School until he
moved to Voorhees in August
2011. Tom become the starting
quarterback for the Vikings his
sophomore year, according to
Eastern Regional High School
Vikings head coach Dan Spittal.
Tom said it was difficult to get
used to the size of Eastern High
School. Camden Catholic has ap-
proximately 850 students, while
Eastern has approximately 2,200
students.
It was pretty much getting to
know all the football guys. Cam-
den Catholic was a really small
school compared to Eastern. I re-
ally like where I am at right now,
Tom said.
Although Tom said it was diffi-
cult transitioning from one
school to another, he became com-
fortable on the football field.
Toms freshman year at Cam-
den Catholic, he completed 22
passes for 397 yards and no touch-
downs. His first year at Eastern,
Toms sophomore year, he com-
pleted 81 passes for 1,251 yards
and nine touchdowns. Toms sea-
son stats were more than double
this past season, according to
Spittals statistics.
Spittal said Tom might have a
long way to go before he reaches
his brothers accomplishments,
but Tom might be a better quar-
terback and overall athlete than
his brother.
From what I understand, he is
the best athlete in his family. Bet-
ter than his brothers and his one
sister, Spittal said.
During his high school days,
Joe held the southern New Jersey
record for most passing yards in
one game (471 yards), and he
threw for 5,137 yards the fourth
most passing yards in a South
Jersey high school starting ca-
reer, according to the Ravens
website.
Tom has one more season left
in high school. Spittal said last
season Tom threw for approxi-
mately 3,000 yards and 25 touch-
downs.
He has got what you cant
coach, he said.
If he passes for more than 1,900
yards next season, Tom will
break a South Jersey record.
Spittal said Tom could easily
reach that number.
When the game is on the line,
he wants the ball in his hands. He
is a superior athlete, a competitor.
He really is a throw-back, three-
sport athlete, Spittal said.
Tom also pitches on Easterns
baseball team and is a guard on
the basketball team, Spittal said.
He is really a five-month-a-
year quarterback. He has a very
high ceiling left on how much bet-
ter he can get, Spittal said,
adding most quarterbacks who
play and practice 12 months out of
the season do not have as much
room for improvement.
During basketball season, Tom
doesnt worry about football.
The duration of the time I am
worried about the sport I am play-
ing, Tom said.
He attends camps over the
summer to keep up with his foot-
ball skills. But when baseball sea-
son rolls around he is going to try
to keep his football-throwing arm
in shape, he said.
Although Tom is a great asset
and athlete at Eastern Regional
High School, his skills on the foot-
ball field will improve, Spittal
said.
He has better days ahead of
him, he said.
On the field, Spittal said Tom is
more of a drop-back quarterback,
but he has the ability to extend
plays.
Spittal said Tom once hurdled
over a defender, but got a penalty.
You are not allowed to hurdle
over a defender unless they have
a hand on the ground, Spittal
said.
He has outstanding jumping
abilities. The kid can really
jump, he said.
According to Spittal, Toms ac-
tions on and off the field reflect
the type of leader he is.
He leads by his actions and

his attitude, a lot like his broth-
er, he said.
Tom is in his junior year in
high school, and college re-
cruiters are showing interest.
I am looking forward to play-
ing football in college, Tom said,
adding he isnt really sure where
he is going to go.
There are a bunch that have
shown a lot of interest, said Spit-
tal. Colleges such as Penn State,
Ohio State, the University of Ken-
tucky, Rutgers and Stanford are
interested in Tom.
I am interested in going to
Duke, Tom said.
As for following in his broth-
ers footsteps, Spittal said its not
just the name that makes Tom a
great quarterback.
The name means something,
but also when you see his high-
lights you know he is something
special, he said.
Tom is considering playing

I am definitely thinking about

for the $7,576,482 budget.
Taxes for residents would be
raised three-tenths of a cent per
$100 of assessed property value
from the 2013 fire district budget,
Pacifico said.
Pacifico could not be reached
for comment as to how the in-
crease would affect residents tax
bills.
Vaughn Vandegrift was also
elected to serve a three-year term
on the fire commission, but his
opponent Gerard Slack closely
followed in votes. Vandegrift re-
ceived 448 votes, while Slack re-
ceived 441 votes.
The township scheduled to re-
count the mailin ballots on Tues-
day, March 5.
Although the unofficial results
show Vandergrift won the elec-
tion by seven votes, he said he
would not comment until after
Tuesdays recount.
Vandegrift, a long time resi-
dent of Voorhees, is a retired
Voorhees firefighter with 37 plus
years of experience.
Vandegrift has also spent time
on various township committees
and boards.
As for the budget, Pacifico said
he was glad with the residents
decision to pass the 2013 operat-
ing budget.
Voorhees is home to approxi-
mately 29,000 residents, two fire
stations, volunteer and career
firefighters and EMTs.
I just want to thank the resi-
dents in supporting the fire dis-
trict, Pacifico said, adding with-
out the residents help, the fire
district would not be able to oper-
ate.

Library hosting teen
board summit March 2
Across the state during the
month of March, four public li-
braries, including Vogelson, will
be hosting Regional Teen Adviso-
ry Board Summits to acknowl-
edge teens in the region who have
supported their library by serv-
ing on teen councils or advisory
boards. Our summit will host
teens from Camden, Burlington,
and Gloucester counties who
have advocated for their
libraries.
This is our way of honoring
them and saying thank you.
The summit will be held on Sat-
urday, March 2, from 10 a.m. to 2
p.m. at the Vogelson Branch locat-
ed at 203 Laurel Road in Voorhees.
